HH questions and etc.

So far I'm only reading the books and no novella or Audio books so I need some pointers on where can I get some info on how was Garviel Loken rescued aka is it a book, novella or audiobook.

Also is any of the audiobooks/novella relevalant to the plot (as in advancement or tying loose end) so far? If so, which ones?

Another thing I noticed is that the Luna Wolves are often described as the best of the best but I struggle to find why except they have Horus directing them and whatever they points their bolters/chainswords at dies. I know they are good but so far I've seen them portrayed as good just because author choose them to kill easily their targets more than having a distinctive characteristic that makes them good.

Any thoughts on the subject»?

For the Garro story, it would be

- Flight of the Eisenstein, Heresy novel

- Oath of moment, audio

- Legion of One, audio

- Sword of Truth, audio (this story just before Legion of One, but it release was after)

- Burden of Duty/Grey Angel, audio:  Burden of Duty is focused on Garro.

If your wanting more on the Knights, then you'll want to check out Vengeful Sprit novel.  There also a new Garro audio due for release by the end of this year & can be bought early that the Warhammer Fest event.

I think Legion of One will help out if your reading Vengeful Sprit.  While Sword of Truth will help out if your reading the White Scars novels that where release last year.  Oath of Moment tie with Know no Fear novel.

I really enjoy all the Garro audio & looking forward to the brand new one.

Loken is rescued in Garro: Legion of One, which is the third Garro audio drama, chronologically, but released as the second. Oath of Moment and Sword of Truth both play before it.

Legion of One is followed up by Grey Angel, and that is followed up by Luna Mendax, a short story from a weekender(?) anthology. That's as far as Loken went before Vengeful Spirit.

In Vengeful Spirit you also meet another Luna Wolf Knight Errant, who originated from The Outcast Dead, which got followed up by the Wolf Hunt audio drama, centered around him and Yasu Nagasena.

Also is any of the audiobooks/novella relevalant to the plot (as in advancement or tying loose end) so far? If so, which ones?

Butchers Nails ties in and takes place before Betrayer, you can either get this in audio or in the Angron E-Book which also includes Lord of the Red Sands. Dosent really advance the plot as much as it sets the stage for Bretayer.

I also recommend Theif of Revelation, takes place after the Thousand Sons escape from Prospero, features Ahriman beginning his work on the Rubric and has a scene where Magnus says they must eventually choose a side, and seems to be quite impressed with the level of Warp Craft the Word Bearers have obtained.

I think just because the short story is set before a major novel, there is not necessarily a reason to read it first. Sometimes it is better to read it after.

Some short stories fill in a small blank and make you think "hmm interesting" but can spoil plot points of the real book.

I think its because the Luna Wolves conquered most planets for the Imperium, followed closely by the Ultramarines.

The Ultramarines conquered the most worlds. The Luna Wolves may have looked snazzier doing it, though.

The Luna Wolves had the most military victories, so perhaps they were a bit more interested in defeating enemy civilisations rather than liberating human worlds.

For people on the fence about audio dramas, the next HH book is going to feature a good amount of those in prose forms:

Brotherhood of the Storm – Chris Wraight
Serpent – John French
Hunter's Moon – Guy Haley
Veritas Ferrum – David Annandale
Riven – John French
Strike and Fade – Guy Haley
Honour to the Dead – Gav Thorpe
Butcher's Nails – Aaron Dembski-Bowden
Warmaster – John French
Kryptos – Graham McNeill
Wolf's Claw – Chris Wraight
Thief of Revelations – Graham McNeill
The Divine Word – Gav Thorpe
Lucius, the Eternal Blade – Graham McNeill
The Eightfold Path – Anthony Reynolds
Guardian of Order – Gav Thorpe
Heart of the Conqueror – Aaron Dembski-Bowden
Censure – Nick Kyme
Lone Wolf – Chris Wraight

Um... source? It's been stated on more than one occasion that only Horus had more victories that the Lion. Admittedly victories don't necessarily equate to worlds conquered, but still.

With pleasure.

"[Roboute Guilliman] quickly assimilated the many wonders of the Imperium and set about his new role with skill and enthusiasm. His chief talents, as ever, lay in war, and he soon led the Ultramarines to fresh conquests in the galactic south. He succeeded in liberating more worlds during the Great Crusade than any other Primarch, and the worlds he brought within the Imperium were to benefit from his organisational skills and passion for efficient government.

Whenever Roboute Guilliman freed a world from the tyranny of Orks, Chaos or other aliens, his first priority was to set up a self-supporting defence system. Once a world was safe he could move on, leaving behind enough advisers to ensure that industry would be created, trading routes set up with the Imperium, and government directed towards the prosperity of the people. In this way the Ultramarines could conquer worlds faster than any other Space Marine Legion.

Meanwhile, the fortress of the Ultramarines grew on Macragge. Some Ultramarines remained behind to supervise the work, which progressed rapidly thanks to the ready trading network and advanced industries of the planet. Within a year a training base was established, and recruiting began on the planet Macragge and surrounding worlds. It was not long before the Ultramarines Legion received its first influx of warriors born and bred on Macragge."

- 2nd Edition Codex Ultramarines, p. 12

- 5th Edition Codex Space Marines, p. 13

"The Ultramarines are an exemplary Chapter - arguably the purest. noblest and most honoured of their legendary kind. From the fledgling days of the Imperium, when they liberated more planets druing the Great Crusade than any other Legion, to more recently, when they alone held the foe at bay at the beginning of the Tyrannic Wars, the Ultramarines have covered themselves in glory."

- 6th Edition Rulebook, p. 187

The first quote is perhaps a bit long, but I found in interresting to point out that the 2nd Edition Codex did not just assert that Guilliman liberated the most worlds, but that it specifically explained how and why he was able to do so. (Essentially, because of logistics.) And I also wanted to highlight that the Ultramarines were making faster progress than the other Legions before they started to grow as big as they eventually would become. The increased size would then have improved their progress rate even further. The 5th Edition Codex repeats the statement about conquering the most worlds, but sadly omits the explanation.

The one source I am aware of that contests that is from the Sons of Horus Index Astartes article, the "beliefs" section of which stating the following:

"The overriding belief of the Legion prior to the Warmaster's demise was in the ultimate superiority of Horus and themselves. In continually seeking to prove themselves as the greatest Legion, they did indeed achieve most in terms of sheer number of worlds brought into the Imperial fold prior to the Heresy."

- Index Astartes Sons of Horus

In my humble opinion a single Index Astartes article is overruled by two Codex entries (one prior, one after the release of that article) and a rulebook entry. (It is also interesting to note that the author of that Index Astartes article only contributed one other Index Astartes article, Alpha Legion, which similarly ignores the Ultramarines background, but does not seem to have been involved in any other published 40K material, other than working for the White Dwarf. Though this is perhaps somewhat of an inverse argument from authority.)

Furthermore, it is stated in almost every Codex Dark Angels that Horus, Jonson and Russ (in that order) had achieved the most "victories". Though that is not in direct contradiction with a claim to having conquered the most worlds. Every destroyed xenos or rebel faction would be a victory, but not necessarily an additional conquered world.
