Legacies of Betrayal

The Red Thirst

Here's a list of stories in the upcoming anthology Legacies of Betrayal:

Anyone else really disappointed that there is nothing new here?

I have all of these in audio** and quite frankly feel as though Black Library have run out of ideas and are just stalling for time/waiting on authors to finish their current books. (**I understand some people dont like audios, but for those of us that do, this book seems like a bit of a slap in the face to me)

Anyone else feel the lull that has happened in the Heresy books this year, almost as if they were page fillers to make the Heresy seem longer? From what I've heard the last few books have been well boring.

Have to disagree. I haven't found the GW audiobooks to be worthy the money, so I don't, and won't, buy them. So I can only really approve of them making the stories available in print as well ( though it'll be a while before I even think about picking this one up, still far to behind on the Heresy series...).

Is releasing a book you don't want to read really a "slap in the face"?

If it had new stuff in other than print versions of the audios, you'd have to buy a book full of stories you didn't want just to get hold of one that you did.

A slap in the face brother in the sense that they should be releasing new content as opposed to stories that have been out for years in some cases.

For someone like me who lives day to day with the next heresy book in the back of his mind, this is a slap in the face indeed. To be so excited for the next novel once you've seen the artwork (about a month ago) to learning that it is nothing but a reprint of things that any avid Heresy collector should already have.

To me it seems as though BL had a meeting:

"we need a book release for Warhammer Fest, but we've got nothing"

"I know lets reprint stories from the last year and sell them again in hardback for $45(aus)"

The stone is almost out of blood.

Pretty sure these two are new:

Heart of the Conqueror – Aaron Dembski-Bowden

Serpent – John French

They are printing the audios due to customer demand. There are plenty of people who don't want to listen to the audio dramas, but still want to know what happened. There have already been two books collecting the audios, this is just continuing the trend.

Can't please everybody I guess...

Serpent and Heart of the Conqueror were both previously published as event-only Horus Heresy Weekender stories, so they are technically not new.

BL has said that they wish to have all HH stories available in all formats, eventually.  This works both ways.  While older novels are getting hardcovers and audio books, the audio shorts and exclusive novellas are being combined into a single novel.  Even having read/listened to a good number of these, I am happy to see that BL are keeping to their promise that given time, everyone will be able to enjoy the HH in their chosen format.

As to the comment that the book consists entirely of old material, I should remind people that when Shadows of Treachery came out, there was quite an uproar that only two of the stories were previously unreleased, that people were being "tricked" into buying a book, half of which they've read already, just for two short stories they hadn't.  I see this as significantly better, as those who have already read all of the stories this book contains can save their money.

Of course there would be no impact, however I feel duped and a little cheated to think we would be getting something new.

Would that be too much to ask BL?

I fail to see the problem. They're releasing the audiodramas into book format for those that prefer to read the books rather than listen to them. They have released a list of what is in the book, explicitly stating that most have been audiodramas or printed in other books before hand, so it is obvious that they are not new works. Not a new novel, but as I can't see anywhere where it was promised I can't see any issue with it being an anthology?

I have Templar to keep me warm until the next big Heresy release. If you guys didn't download it because you don't like audio dramas... your loss. Your big loss, in my opinion. John French has done fantastic work with Sigismund and it deserves your attention

Unfortunately I must wait a few months as I like my audios in physical form ;)

My shoddy, .50 Cal busted, ear drums say "Thank you, Black Library".

Even if my hearing was still on point, I can't wrap my head around listening to a book. I'm glad for the script books, personally.

Oh boy, you're in for a treat when we finally get to download books directly to our brains and "read" them as memories or in-head movies :P

The Betrayer audiobook is the definitive edition for me. It's one thing to read Angron constantly coughing and spitting blood, its another to hear the voice actor do that for every line the primarch has. Unbelievably brutal.

Nah. There's something infinitely wonderful about holding a brand new book in your hand, smelling the ink and paper, and in some rare examples, feeling the leather or fabric bindings.

Thus why I am a sucker for novellas. I'll pay the extra cash for something beautiful.

Besides that, I have an intense and consuming imagination, to the point that I can actually imagine feeling, hearing or smelling something when I read. I feed much of this madness, that is only triggered by reading, into my models.

I'll stick with reading, for a whole ton of reasons.

A friend loaned me his iPad to read a few books he had on it, and... I didn't like it. At all. It reminded me of when my mother quit smoking after 4 decades and said "I don't know what to do with my hands,". I never thought I'd miss the motions of turning a page so keenly.

Totally get ya. Which is why I prefer buying hardback books over using my kindle even if its more convenient and easy to travel with.

I'm underwhelmed by this release, though there are five stories I've not encountered in any form that I'll look forward to getting hold of. Again though this comes down to the multi-formate release issues, I've moved quite happily onto the hardbacks from initially thinking I'd only stick with the originally sized legacy editions. I don't think this release will be worth the £20 but my OCD need for uniformity won't allow me to just wait on the cheaper version! laugh.png

By my count there's also another six shorts they could have put on there rather than Brotherhood of the Storm whicharen't collected anywhere:

Lord of the Red Sands

Army of One

Distant Echoes of Old Night

Lost Sons

The Gates of Terra

The Wolf of Ash and Fire

Happy to be corrected on that list if I'm wrong.
