Sweeping Advances

So, in a game today, it came to my attention that victors in combat MUST make a sweeping advance roll. I had assumed, and have been playing, as if the victor could choose whether or not to sweeping advance. Can anyone verify this is the case for me? If it is, I've been playing this rule wrong for years...

Well, the book says:

"Sweeping Advances

When a unit Falls Back from combat, the victors make a Sweeping Advance, attempting to cut down their fleeing foes."

So, yeah, it happens as a consequence of a melee Fall Back being initiated.

You can prevent the option by including a Terminator or Slow and Purposeful model in the unit, though.

How far back this goes? I don't have quick access to my books, so I can't say. 6th probably had it, though.

That's only true for SaP. There it says a unit containing at least one model with SaP cannot perform a Sweeping Advance.

For TDA it only says that models wearing the  terminator armor cannot. That does not prevent the rest of the unit when they have only power/scout armor to perform a Sweeping Advance.

It goes all the way back to 5th ed, which is when I started. My first game ever, one of my tacticals fled off the table from being assaulted by dark eldar and allowed to flee, and I've been playing it that way ever since. Guess I'll have to change the way I play that. Puts bigger impact on winning combat with a SaP unit or terminators when you're in the opponent's back line.

Read the rules for Disallowed Sweeping Advances again, second paragraph. Just having one Terminator in a group will prevent a Sweeping Advance as much as if the whole unit was in Terminator Armour or had SnP.

You are right. There it is. Ty :)
