Space Wolves by Adam - VI Legion Vlka Fenryka

Recommended Posts

hey Guys!

I have just started collecting Space Wolves and I will be posting the finished painted figures in this plog.

Any comments are welcome!

Here are the first miniatures I have painted: 2 grey hunters, 1 Bloodclaw (my first painted SW figure), 1 Scout and 1 terminator. Soon to come, after applying snow on the base, will be a Runepriest.

Ah, good old robin's egg blue.  You've done some great shading/highlighting with it there.  Things are pretty comprehensively awesome here, really.

If I were to plant a flag in something (and I must, by solemn oath) I would say that blue is a less than ideal color choice for power weapons on Wolves.  I know I know, ice frost blah blah.  But blue on blue, even slightly different shades, doesn't really 'pop' like people (typically) expect power weapons to.  Sticking to a cool color scheme in purples or greens would lend interesting results without being too glaring I think.  Going with a red or orange or yellow would just make them compete with the iconography and make eyes unhappy :P

That one is all personal taste though.

Firepower - thanks mate! and thanks for thinging constructively. Actually, I thought about it, but in the end I decided to do the blue power stuff - it's just too fluffy for me, ice frost blah blah exactly ;) But thanks again for your thoughts, I appreciatge them and count on more such expressions in the future (you never know what awesome idea might come out that way :))

Sohail - it was Dryad bark on the whole pelt, then layer gorthor brown on a smaller part, then baneblade brown on an even smaller part, and then karak stone on the lightest parts. Then come the washes - reiksland fleshshade on the whole pelt, then agrax earthshade on the darkest colours. Then drybrush: baneblade on (more or less) the parts painted dryad bark/gorthor brown, and then karak stone on the rest. And voila!

Looking fantastic brother! The paint job is exceptionally smooth and I love the touch of giving the Runepriest those eerie glowing eyes.

On the blue power weapon subject, perhaps to break up the blue, have you considered adding a richer bronze onto the weaponry to add some warmth to the models and have a contrast to the grey and icyness? Maybe as an example, instead of steel for the weapon housing, use a gold/bronze/brass colour?

Keep up the awesome stuff!

The recipe is:

Base Mournfang Brown, Washed with Reiksland Fleshshade, Washed in lower parts with Agrax Earthshade, then drybrush with Deathclaw Brown, Then Drybrush Troll Slayer Orange and a final highlight with Flayed One Flesh (this paint is from the 'Eavy Metal Edge range, I heard it is the same colour as the GW dry paint for highlighting skin).

There yo go :)

I use GW Lahmian Medium to thin the paints down and apply smooth transparent layers. I actually have 3 bottles of prepared colours for this (Fenrisian Grey, Russ grey and Drakenhof Nightshade for washing), each greatly thinned down with lahmian medium. Although I don't know the exact recipe - the consistency should be something similar to milk. This really speed up the process of painting, as previously I always prepared a small amount of paint before paiting, which took a lot of time.
