FenrisWolf
I have noticed that aside from the Stormgrrs, very few people are taking Helfrost cannons on dreads. They seem to be praised on the fliers, so why not on the dreads? Is it a range issue? Inquisitor Kravin
I'm planning on putting a Helfrost cannon on a dread. I think it offers a nice compromise of being better against power armour than the assault cannon whilst avoiding the Gets Hot! risk of plasma cannon. The Helfrost rule is an occasional bonus rather than a key decision driver. It is short range but a hero of the Vlka Fenryka isn't honoured with a dreadnought body in order to do the work of fire support, leave that to the tanks. Hyuzanriu
This is just speculation but I think people aren't taking them on dread because of the platform, not the weapon itself. At 30" (24 + 6 move) dread has a much smaller threat range than a flyer. The dread and the flyer have the same front and side armor value, but the dread is not as survivable when you compare it to the rear armor 12 and only being hit by snapshots. That is just my personal thought on why people don't take it. Frater Cornelius
Frankly, I have not really seen it being praised on the flyer either. The flyer is being praised because of it's total arsenal. As for the Dread, I do not like it because it is not twin-linked, so the s8 ap1 shot can easily miss. Besides, what does this gun do well? Killing tanks? A Multimelta does the same with the added 2D6 pen on half range. The TLLC is much safer than both. Killing Infantry? Give him Assault Cannon and Heavy Flamer. I would buy if for the Dread if it was twin-linked or if it was the Destructor. Right now it feels rather underwhelming. Inb4 Hellfrost rule: too unreliable. CatSmasher
I think its because the fliers can't take anything else, so its hard to compare utility. I can't see why one wouldn't take the plascan which is better in every way Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/297417-helfrost-cannon-on-dreads/#findComment-3821779 Share on other sites
Squark
I have noticed that aside from the Stormgrrs, very few people are taking Helfrost cannons on dreads. They seem to be praised on the fliers, so why not on the dreads? Is it a range issue? The issue is, well, Dreadnoughts have issues. They're basically monstrous creatures with no armor save (so Autocannons and Gauss weapons can slaughter them) that sometimes only have 1 wound (and, to add insult to injury, they don't get the monstrous creature's extra special rules). While they are harder to "wound" in close combat (AV 12 ~ T8, since S6 will wound both on 6's), that doesn't really make up for all that, especially since most good monstrous creatures have more attacks or better shooting attacks. Also, the reason the Stormwolf is praised is because it's a flier that can have objective secured (which, if you know what you're doing, can be really obnoxious), and it has 3 TL High strength low AP shots- Except if you're staring down a superheavy or land raider, in which case you might actually bring both multi-melta sponsons to bear on one target. And hey, you do have POTMS, so that other sponson isn't going to waste most of the time. The helfrost turret is probably the weakest of the four guns outside of niche situations. toonarmy
I am going to run Bjorn with hellfrost cannon in larger lists. He mitigates all the issues stated above: low BS, AV12, invun save, etc. The other dreads gain no benefit to having a hellfrost cannon unless you go up against a lot of MC's. the hellfrost rule is always worth having at that point as is the stronger S8 shot. Ullr Direfang
Having to yet play a game of 7th, I would say that is would be a good weapon if you face a lot more infantry then vehicles. But that is me just reading rules and such so can't really say. I plan to use one from time to time. Rune Priest Jbickb
Sort of on topic, but does the helfrost rule effect walkers. I am inclined towards no as it says wound in the rule, but they can take a strength test so I am not sure. What do you guys think? Frater Cornelius
Only things you can wound. Walkers do not take wounds. They take glances and pens. Commander_Moustache
It does have the versatility over the melter and plasmagun (A sort of mix fo the two, if more expensive) And can kill in one shot Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/297417-helfrost-cannon-on-dreads/#findComment-3821898 Share on other sites
skeletoro
Ven dreads have BS 5 so twin-linked isn't really needed. I was considering taking some in the formation but then decided i'd just give one to Bjorn and give the vens axes and shields. Sturm Moonwolf
I use it on Bjorn, any other dread would have to be a venerable for me to take it.
