Advice for basing gaming tiles.

Greetings Brothers,

I have recently been given four 2 foot x 2 foot mdf tiles to base for me and my friends regular duels.

He already had a Javis grass Matt and stuck them down on two of his. Now they always say approx for sizes and they didn't quite fit leaving about an inch lip on two sides. This has made me a bit reluctant to get them. I also considered just using sand and flock and basing it myself. However, I would like to keep the tiles quite level alas we have a fair bit of terrain pieces between us now.

I guess what I'm trying to ask are there any alternatives to the Javis mats that people know of? Or any other ideas bearing in mind what I have already said.

All comments are greatly appreciated.

My mates and I solved that issue by buying green masking/duct tape, centring the mat and duct taping all of the edges, 1) to cover the gap, and 2) for a little more protection against peeling around the edges.

Buy another brand of grass mat and glue or staple it to your tiles. There are plenty of brands, mostly aimed at railway modellers, so there’s plenty of choice. Just get one that’s a little larger than your combined tiles, stick one tile to it near the edge of the mat, but so the mat overhangs the tile a bit, and then cut the mat to fit the tile. Repeat with the other one.

I had to google what a Javis mat was. Have you considered using a light green felt and then spounge on a couple of darker shades with cheap craft paint?

That's a pretty decent idea, but I think it'd work better with some kind of ink or dye that would soak in instead of paint that might gunk up the surface. I wonder if you could even put it in a spray bottle to get some nice variations in color...
