Kilofix
I've played against Flying Tyranids a bunch of times before but I haven't really taken the time to truely understand their mechanics (I've just been going by what I've been told by my opponents during the game). I don't have their Codex. But, as I will be playing more against them, I'm looking to better understand them - and I have a few questions: 1. Apart from Gargoyles, and excluding LoWs (like Harridan) - what are the two larger Flying Tyranid MCs that are commonly used and what are their base stats like? Specifically Tough, Wounds and Saves 2. What gives those two Flying Tyranids Haywire and what gives them Shrouded? Is it a diffferent unit that gives them Shrouded? 3. Do they have Synapse? I think one of them at least does 4. Are there more effective ways of taking them down - other than with Firestorm Redoubts and Vultures (which is what I've been using)? May have more questions after - thanks for the info! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/297485-help-with-flying-tyranids/ Share on other sites
Redtoof
As a tyranid player who doesn't use the flyers very much: 1: I assume you mean the Hive Tyrant with wings and the Hive Crone. The Harpy is the other model from the Crone kit but I don't think it is that common. I think posting stats is bad, but the Tyrant is like a flying power armour prince with extra toughness, while the Crone/Harpy are like the prince but with a worse save. 2: Hive tyrants can have a haywire flamer, Crones have 4 haywire missiles. Shrouded they get from being within 6 inches of a Venomthrope, which moves like infantry. 3: Hive Tyrant has synapse. The Crone/Harpy do not. 4: From my experience Tyrants don't like dedicated anti air stuff or things with lots of AP3 shots. They Harpy/Crone really don't like autocannons, heavy bolters or other AP4 multishot weapons, even mass bolters. Neither of them are fond of vector strikes. Axagoras
use a quad gun to murder the crone/harpies and something with ap3 or better to kill the tyrants. At the last tournament I went to in the 3rd round I almost got paired up vs a 3 tyrant, 2 crones and 1 harpy with some hive guard and gargoyles and other toys... and even with a firestorm I was worried about how that list would roll me... Hyuzanriu
I happen to have a great idea. You Tyranid player has a copy of his own codex doesn't he? Why not just ask him if you can read it? Very few honest players would have a problem with another player wanting to know how thier units work so that they don't have to explain what it does every game. If can also keep you from getting cheated accidentally because they misunderstand one of thier own rules. The codex will tell you everything about how a unit works. EDIT: I just read that and it sounded kind of butthole-ish. Didn't mean it that way. A google search for "Tyranid Tactics" would likely give you better answers that what many of us power-armor players can provide. minigun762
Ravens are tough enough with AV12 to not get totally wrecked by the Tyrant's S6 spam and most of their shooting is wounding on 2's and not allowing armor saves. shandwen
Stalkers and quad guns should probably do well enough. Both options are cheap, and will ignore the armor of the non-hq guys. And the haywire missiles make me fear putting a Ravrn out. Perhaps a baseless fear, but eh. I second the stormraven. It has killed any tyranid fmc I have pointed it at. knife&fork
Psychic powers can also do a number on them if you are short on AA. One particular nasty combo is to hit them with 'enfeeble' and try to make them fail a grounding test. Use a nova power to auto hit if you can. Then watch with glee as they realize what will happen with their now T4 monster/daemon prince should they suffer that S9 crash wound... :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/297485-help-with-flying-tyranids/#findComment-3827822 Share on other sites
