Removing tabards from plastic Sternguard squad?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone tried this?

I really like the bits from the new SG squad box and want to build up some more SG, but I do not like tabards, nor do they have a place in the aesthetic of my army.

Looking at the sprues on the GW site, it looks like maybe they can be cut away, but can one do so without totally screwing up details?

Anyone done it?

They would likely be extremely difficult to remove completely without damaging the legs, and even if you don't gouge the legs up, you would still need to resculpt parts of them so they would look normal.

The tabard is solid all the way through the middle of the legs.

Not worth the effort, you'd probably end up doing a lot of green/grey stuff fixing.  Just buy replacement fancy legs off a bitz site. There are third party model companies that would make terrific replacement legs, or you could alternatively grab an assortment of legs from other GW kits.

Though not possible for all legs judging from a look a the sprue, you could probably cut the shin and kneepad section off over the knee and glue them onto a set of hips from a regular marine. Might have to do some creative basing or repositioning of the legs, as the poses are different though. You'll have to do some serious converting either way, unless you want to try to make a press mold of the details and transfer them onto regular legs that way. Google some tutorials for press molding, some people make shoulder pads with custom iconography that way, same principles should apply to doing it on legs.

Sadly, trading is not allowed here on the B&C, as per forum rules. However, there are other trading sites on the Net and eBay can be a good place to source various bits and pieces if you don't want to buy full kits :)

Grab Death Company or Vanguard Veteran or even Assault Marine legs. The former two are just as blinged out with iconography, and they all have dynamic walking and running poses.

Sternguard legs are absolute garbage EXCEPT for the tabards and the bling, IMO. They are the dumb old leaning and squatting poses we've had with the plastic tactical kit since 3E but with tabards and bling.

I bought a Vanguard set and a Sternguard set at the same time and then used the Van legs for the Sterns. I think it really gives the always moving forward rather than a static pose. And then used the legs with the Vanguard set and made Honour guards out of them.
