Pride of the Legion

Hey guys,

I'm considering putting together a Herey-era army and I'm somewhat torn between Mechanicum and Word Bearers. I'm also definitely drawn to the idea of an army composed primarily of Terminators, as I've never played Deathwing before (or any equivalent) and also the low model count will help to keep costs down, at least initially. Basically, I was thinking that I'd run two squads of Terminators in Land Raiders (and maybe one in a Spartan for bigger games) and then deep strike in Gal Vorbak -hopefully- as the Terminators hit the enemy line on turn 2. Obviously it's not going to be the most competitive list ever conceived, but would it at least be viable?

And on that note, would the Pride of the Legion bundle be a good place to start? This, in particular-

As an aside, if you take a Chaplain as your first HQ (ie. Erebus) would you then need to take a second Chaplain to fulfill the requirement of Charistmatic Leadership?

Thanks!

1. I think someone around here did the math on all the new FW bundles and found that they were generally moneysavers, but I don't know off the top of my head.  Whether that bundle is worth it or not to you will depend entirely on how you want to kit your terminators out - if you don't want to give any of them axes, for example, all those axes in the kit are going to waste.  Of note, the bundle you linked has a LR Proteus, which lacks an assault ramp.  They are 80% the points cost of a normal Land Raider and might be a viable way to go about AV14-spam, but if you want to take the game directly into the assault phase, it's probably not the way to go.  It also has 25 terminators, and you were talking about a max of 10 to start with.  Another important distinction is that HH Land Raiders have a max of 10 transport capacity, which generally means you need a Spartan to carry your HQs.

2. As for the list itself, I could see it possibly working out.  Gal Vorbak with power swords are crazy PA-killers and they should help you out with the outnumbering you'll encounter when going Pride of the Legion.  I think if you really want the list to come together, you want a Spartan + Terminator Squad + HQs, a LR + Terminator Squad, and a LR + Gal Vorbak.

3. You could just as easily take a Primus Medicae as your first HQ and Erebus as your 'second' to fulfill the Charismatic Leadership requirements.  Word Bearers are basically 2 HQ minimum, and one of them has to be a Chaplain or non-Consul Centurion.

I emailed Forge World ages ago and they confirmed that you can use Erebus as your mandatory chaplain. You still need another HQ since the Word Bearers rules say that this extra chaplain is in addition to your usual mandatory HQ requirement. But this can be anything you want (unless it's a Moritat since he doesn't count as your initial mandatory HQ either, so can only be your third HQ).

Interestingly they also said Erebus (and Kor Phaeron) also count as a Diabolist for the purposes of fulfilling the Word Bearers Rite of War requirement since they can give units Dark Channelling. Personally I'd still be tempted to go with a Diabolist since he's a Daemon and can do summoning more reliably than anyone else in your army (only periling on a double 6, not any double), just a shame you can't put him in terminator armour.
