Wolves vs Chaos Space Marines Batrep

Recommended Posts

I played a friendly game with one of my mates last Friday. This was my first game with the new codex - and he is a little inexperienced with Chaos SM as he is usually a Nids player - so it was all a little new for us.

1500points

So ...

My army was

WGBL TW, storm shield, runic armour, KrakSword, Fellclaws teeth

4 TWC 2 ss / pf

4 TWC 2 ss / pf

5 Terminators, 5 combi plasma, 2 ss, 3 poweraxes

Dedicated transport StormWolf - TLMM

10 Grey Hunters, 2 plasma guns, WGPL combi plasma, ss

Dedicated Transport Drop Pod

1 Venerable Dreadnought, Fenrisian Axe, Blizzard Shield

Dedicated Transport Drop Pod

Drop Pod (Fast Attack)

..... the temies usually go in the FA drop pod - leaving the Storm Wolf flying solo.

(But of course, if needs must I can change this around).

His army was something like ...

Daemon Prince (Psycher 2) Wings, power armour

HellChicken

7 Plague Marines - plasma gun, rhino (possibly fist in there)

7 Chaos Space Marines - plasma gun, leader with power weapon

10(ish) Chaos Cultists

Chaos Lord (Nurgle) -Bike - the "flamer" weapon that is like the Hellchicken flamer (sorry cannot remember name)

Chaos Sorceror (lvl 1) - (bike)

6 Nurgle Bikers

2 obliterators

We started playing the basic Maelstrom mission. Tables were either side (short edges).

I won roll - gave him first go (I was worried about the Storm talon getting hammered by 2 fliers so wanted to come on second).

He placed his cultists and normal marines behind a large ruin near most of the objectives (which were his side). Then declared he was infiltrating his bikers and rhino.

I placed the 2 TWC units as far forward as I could, storm shields placed at the front (which looking back could have been a bad mistake).

He then infiltrated BEHIND my TWC. (Just goes to show, all my plans involved rushing forwards at him ... then he comes in behind me !)

He had a decent amount of plasma and some very nasty AP3 flamer action all behind me where the Stormshields weren't going to help.

Then I stole initiative !!!!!

To be honest, this was pretty much his death knell. I dropped the termies right by his bikers and rhino. The Blizzdread dropped by his obliterators. The Termies blew the rhino - then my cavalry charged the bikers, the other unit charging the plague marines. I lost one TW to the flamer overwatch then combat began.

Oooooooh ... isn't the WGBL with that load out sweet. He challenged the Chaos Lord and killed him before he got an attack. Next 2 rounds saw him challenge the "sarg" and kill him - then the Sorceror and kill him. No-one got an attack back on him !!

Blizzdread did some maneuvering to avoid being shot by the obliterators (faffing from me as I have never played this guy before).

2nd turn my GreyHunter DP came on near his cultists and marines. Hellchicken came on - flamered them with his AP3. 1st GH died. The next one was the packleader with SS. He took the remaining 5 saves on the shield ! Stormwolf then came on and blew his HellChicken out of the air with ease.

After that it was pretty much clean up. The Blizzdread did a lovely job (and something I hadn't thought about) of instakilling both his Obliterators in 1 round (mmm .... S12 smile.png )

All together a nice game. The Chaos Space Marines had been super bold with the infiltrate maneuver - which could have worked. But that steal sealed his doom.

Nice learning curve for me, 3 units I have never played before (termies, stormwolf and blizzdread) and the WGBL was a God of War.

Main lesson learned for me was that Storm Shields are the backbone of my army. One in every unit is SO helpful. OK - sometimes they won't work - but they only have to save once to make their cost back.

He couldn't have possibly infiltrated behind your TWC. When you infiltrate, you must keep 18" distance of any unit can draw line of sight to the infiltrating unit and if no unit can draw line of sight he must keep 12" away. I do not think the table was that big, was it?

Nice to see people using the BlizzDread how he is supposed to be used. Hunting slow expensive backfield units.

GJ overall. However, I wonder what would have happened if you didn't steal. I guess the same outcome, just with more losses on your side.

Thanks Immer. :)

There was just enough room for him to come in 18" away. I had placed the TWC right in the middle and he came in on one if the far corners. He was bunched, but just fitted .

In hind sight, I should have positioned so he couldn't get behind me. No just never thought he would do that !

good win!! EArlier in teh year, we had about 5 games in a row where the initiative was stolen every time, only once did thatnot lead to a crushing victory by whoever stole it.

5 SS saves against a hellturkey off one guy!!! sounds like someone needs a promotion to wolf guard :D

couple of questions though

1. how do you get infiltrate with chaos rhinos/bikers?

2. Isnt the max strength of anything S10 (ie your blizzdread should be S10 max - still - it kills obliterators outright though)

5 SS saves against a hellturkey off one guy!!! sounds like someone needs a promotion to wolf guard biggrin.png

Too right ! He actually ended up in a 1 to 1 challenge with the Chaos Maring Sarg toting a power fist. We carried that fight on to conclusion (even though the game had ended).

Unfortunately, the Chaos Sarg ended up taking him out after about 7 turns.

My feeling is the guy was such a hero with his Storm Shield I may well intern him in Dreadnought armour and he can become the next BlizzDread :)

He got infiltrate due to a warlord trait I believe (up to 3 units).

Good point about the Blizzdread - is that right, S10 max - so you can never instakill T6?

Thanks for the comments Littlbitz, means a lot to me you like the army. Yours have been my favourite lists for a loooong time now.

Then declared he was infiltrating his bikers

He got infiltrate due to a warlord trait I believe (up to 3 units).

Its d3, a random roll and he can only infiltrate infantry. Otherwise every chaos player would be taking multi cad lists with huron and infiltrating 2xDP/spawnstars/bikerstars . So he cheated

After that it was pretty much clean up. The Blizzdread did a lovely job (and something I hadn't thought about) of instakilling both his Obliterators in 1 round (mmm .... S12 smile.png )

but str caps at 10.
