Space Wolves Company - How much is too much.

So, I have been playing on and off since second edition, and I have a stack of models and a heap that are not even made up yet, and with the unit weapons layout changes between those editions I have more than I like of either redundant models (see Wulfen) or no longer cost effective layouts (see Wolf Guard Powerfist/Combi Weapon).

My goal is the next few weeks is to consolidate my units and get rid of excess stuff.

What is an ideal amount of Elites, Troops, Fast Attack, Heavy Support choice.

First off, I do not play Apocalypse so having 10 Grey Hunter Packs is unnecessary. I would think five 10-man squads to be more than sufficient.

Blood Claws - I would expect two 15-man squads, again to be more than enough for any occasion.

Skyclaws/Swift claws - Again two 10-man squads should be more than enough

Fenrisian Wolves - I did have 30 Wolves (missing a few) but I think that is a great number, or do you think 45 wolf models?

Wolf Guard work rather differently in this edition so I have not given them much thought - 20 PA - 20 TDA

Tanks

I purchased two Vindicators recently (in an online auction) and played them and was frankly underwhelmed. Great scare tactic but they didn't do enough to make me want to field them again in tandem.

Thinking 7 Drop pods is the most anyone will need, and I have heaps of Rhinos/Razorbacks

I think I have two whirlwinds and have never used in any edition.

What do other players Great Companies Consist of?

Well, contrary to popular believe I will not say that there ain't enough tongue.png
I like low model-count armies. It gives me more time spend on each individual model and it makes transporting them much easier.
Hence the optimal amount of TWC in my eyes is the amount that fits into a less-than-2k-points list.

I own 12 assembled (and a few unassembled) TWC horses, 8-12 of which actually see regular use, depending on my list, 3 IP which all see regular use, 12 Cyber Wolves, 9 of which see regular use, 12 assembled Fenrisian Wolves 5-10 see regular use, Harald, who is always there, and literally a handful GK which I use on and off.
As you can see my army is small, flexible and pretty much completely in use (since I cycle them once in a while), something that pleases me.

Sure, I still have a few of my Daemons, IG and Tau, which I am selling slowly but surely since I do not use them anyway.
My PA SW and their pods are currently stored away. I own around 7-8 TDA, 30-40 PA, 5 Pods, 12 Bikes and 2 Dreads, which is enough for a lot of solid 1850-2000 points setups. I definitely won't go beyond that since I am less of a collector and more of a builder and player. If I make a model, I want to use it. I hate to see models gathering dust.

I like to have the option of fielding 3 preds or 60 hunters or an army of thunderwolves etc. Since I only collect one 40k army I'll keep going till I've filled all the foc possibilities. Fortunately with a few magnets many vehicles are interchangeable and my preds can dress down to be razorbacks, rhinos or even whirlwinds when required.

I tried to thin out my wolves last year after more than one "friendly" hint from the wife. However I still have units that haven't seen battle in a long time, mainly whirlwinds and vindys.

Like Mustang said, magnets are a great way to keep the modle count down. I have only about 40 grays and 15 bloods but with all the special weapons magged the options are there without the need for more men. Same goes for my terms, TWC, raiders, sky claws and bikes.

Good luck brother.
