What to get starting space wolves?

Recommended Posts

hi all,

i was wondering if i could have any advice for starting space wolves.

i have been doing some reading around and have decided on some units i am definitely getting:

1.bjorn fell handed, ven dread with blizzard shield and murderfang, all in pods

2. lone wolf ((like the fluff)can they be mounted on bikes?)

i also feel a large unit of thunderwolf cavalry would be good, judging by what i see on this forum.

please load me up with advice!

thanks

Well the first thing i would suggest is get the Codex and get the supplement if you're serious about playing space wolves. Read through it and see all of whats going on. Secondly i'd determine a head of time just how you want to play it. Fast and aggressive? Defensive? Full Dakka? or maybe Close combat. Once you've made that decision you can go through and build a solid list of what you want to accromplish. I'd recommend lurking in the Space Wolves army list forum, and get a sense of what people are fielding and why. This would let you make more informed opinions about what you're goals are and how to accomplish them. Finally and most important here. A Space wolf only ever dies but once but we know we will fight again during the wolf time when our beloved Primach returns during the Wolf time, more cowardice, betrayal, and dishonor can be found in Space wolves, then water can be found in a thimble inside a burning sun. So worry not defeat. 10,000 defeated warriors will sing and eat and fight beside our primarchs side, before 1 coward ever enters his honored hall of the dead.

Hey deathguard. I don't really play wolves, but hope my advice is useful anyway.

Unless things have changed significantly from their last codex, grey hunters are going to be your staple troops choice, so a couple of these boxes is a good shout. You can invest in the battleforce, which gives you 20 power armoured bodies, a drop pod and 5 scouts. I haven't heard much about wolf scouts, but you get a pod, which you can use for your dreadnought(s). You may need to invest in an alternate source of special weapons, if you don't plan on running plasma guns, since the grey hunters box only comes with them. Alternate sources include the tactical marine box, sternguard, command squad off the top of my head.

I'd second lots of thunderwolf cavalry. My friend uses them in large numbers, and they wreck all varieties of face. You can convert a lord from the plastic box, or buy the finecast chap, or even Canis, though I haven't heard a lot of love for his model or rules.

Besides that, the terminators are nice models, and are good for converting lone wolves from. I don't think you can mount a lone wolf on a bike, but I'm sure someone with the new dex will chime in.

Another staple for space wolf lists is longfangs, traditionally heavy on missile launchers. Not sure how the costs have changed with the new codex, but they were taken in multiples in most 6ed lists. In terms of buying them, you can buy the devastator box, but that gives you a hodgepodge of weapons, and you'd need to buy 5 box sets just to get enough rockets for a squad. Your best bet is ebay or bits suppliers. If you have any marine friends, they may be willing to trade.

Apart from that, buy what you like. You could get some forgeworld armour sets to mix in, to give your force that heresy feel, mix in some chaos bits to make a 13th company list, or some normal marine bits to tone down the WOLVES EVERYWHERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1!!!!!!!!eleven!!1! that the models have going on, if that's not your thing. In short, buy what you want.

Hope this helps.

The tip I can give also btw is more of a personal question to yourself...

Like how do I want to play ? fast and furious? Slow menancing and powerful, all around? read up some army lists and use your imagination to get something,a style that you'd 'like'...don't know urself? go all around to learn stuff. Also sine u like dreads...just saying, ann all dread army is completely possible: p

Just remember 1 thing when going full dakka...we aint freakin DA

They come with.... 2 heavy bolters, 2 plasma cannons, a missile launcher, 2 las cannons, 2 power fists, 5 chainswords, 5 bolt guns, 4 bolt pistols, 4 plasma pistols, a plasma gun, a multi melta, a frost sword, thunder hammer and storm shield, a pair of wolf claws, a storm bolter and a frost axe.

we "do" a lotta plasma :)

I would agree with all posts.  I wouldnt get stuff yet before having a rough idea what you want to do - or you are likely to waste a lot of money.

The dreads for instance.  Yes, they look cool.  But 3 dreads?  You will have to base your whole army round 3 dreads if you want to use them (especially Bjorn).  Not saying dont do it - but be wary.

Grey Hunters arent the squad of awesome they used to be, but a minimum of 10 or 20 would be good to get.

Vehicles ... you need them - cause footslogging the GHs isn't going to work.  But you need to decide on Rhino/Razors or Drop Pods.

If you are going Drop pods - you need an odd number of them.  1, 3 or 5 seems optimal.

Lone wolves are great (no you cant put them on a bike).  One unit of temies will give you all the lonewolf you need - and have temies if you fancy using them.

Thunderwolves are also awesome.  But not necessary to have LOADS.  I would say at 1500points, 4 + leader is a minimum if you are going to use them.  3 just isnt enough.  You can easily make a cool looking leader from the normal packs.

Stormwolf.  GREAT figure ... looking a solid buy as well if you need anti flier.

There is actually a formation specifically in Champions of Fenris dealing with Bjorn + 2 other VD (minimum it could have I guess as many VD as you could afford), Its pretty awesome actually. You could 'base' your army around them sorta speak but you pretty much gotta assume 1 dread = 1 drop pod.  So if you wanted all 3 to go on turn 1, you'd need 5 Drop pods alone.

GW even has a special 'Deal' on an army group based around it, 7 Dreads (who can all be VD if wanted) and one is Bjorn with Drop pods for all, http://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/The-Fury-of-Fenris

get yourself the following as it can be used over and over again no matter the list:

2x tactical marines boxes

1x space wolves box

That will yield you the following:

30 bodies with wolf bits spread around.

2x melta (only got via tactical marine boxes)

2x flamers (ditto)

2x combi-plasma (ditto)

2x combi-meltas (ditto)

2x combi-flamers (ditto)

quite a few plasmas i'd suggest 2x

18x std. bolter config's.

This will allow you to field flexible units depending on their role, plasma, melta or flamer units. The combi guys can be used as squad leaders or WG, again dependent on their roles.

Plus, you will get 2 missile launchers, so when you get your long fangs box, you can make 3x ML 2x las if you want, or other configs.

I'd maybe also look to get a sprue of 5 jump packs. you can magnetise this for interchangeability with the flamer guys for a skyclaw unit.

dont make the mistake I made, I'm sitting with 50 pa units, no meltas....no flamers....no combi's.... and bits suppliers in my country are non-existent with no access to ebay shippers.

I Think You Should go DropPod heavy list with Dreads and LoneWolfs. So build it around that.

A Quick Droppod list

HQ

Bjorn in Droppod

Elite

Murderfang Droppod and BlizzDread in Droppod

Troops

10 GH in Droppod

10 GH in Droppod

5 BC in Droppod

5 BC in Droppod

5 BC in Droppod

5 BC in Droppod

+ Lone Wolves

Should be around 1500pts and the 3 Dreads and 2 GH come down round 1.

So u "only" need 4 Sets of Wolfpacks and the 3 Dreads and 1 Terminator list (And maybe think about proxy/borrow the Droppods)

In all honesty i would Drop the Bliz or Murderfang + 1 BCDP Unit  and get a unit of Viodclaws for Reroll reserves.

Im working on a list i may post later (if i dont forget it)

EDIT Looking at the list i made thats a solid base. Maybe change some BC Drops to alone Droppods to get Points for LOne Wolves

EDIT 2 on TWC Units follow Immersturms threats he has solid builds

I'd recommend reading this first:  Guide to Army Building, and then use some of the recommendations there to build a list or two.  Then put your lists up in the Army list sub-forum for discussion.  Once you've then figured out what you want, look at the Buying Guide for recommendations on what to actually buy.

Best,

Just a quick comment regarding Z00Z's post. The combi weapons in the tactical box are modular. They come with the parts to make any of the three combi's (and a combi grav) but you can only use one, since there is only one boltgun housing.

Dallo

thanks for all the advice!biggrin.png

i have decided to get the codex but i might hold back on the supplement. i really like the idea of alpha strike podding dreadnoughts, and having a vehicle for a warlord should be pretty fun. i think my army will go a little like this:

warlord

Bjorn-pod

elites

Murderfang-pod

blizzard dread-pod

troops

2x GH packs-pod

fast attack

6 TWC

heavy support

long fangs

as i previously have played BA, i want an up in your face type of army with some fire support, so alpha striking pods filled with angry space wolves sounds really awesome to field.

want to keep it at a realtively low cost for now, so not going to blow huge amounts of money on wolf guard terminators and stormwolves for now!

EDIT:wanted to add some stuff

True, but the boltgun housing is identical to the boltguns. Exacto knife will yield 3 per sprue.

One quick query on the new Skyclaws and Long Fang boxes: is it just my imagination (or just drank too much ale), or did they combine Space Wolf specific sprues with the standard Assault and Devastator squad boxes, like what they did with the Black Templars a few years ago? If they did... that's a lot of plastic for the price, and presumably, get an extra marine  using the kneeling legs from the Devastator / Long Fangs box.

yeah the skyclaws got the jump pack sprue and the long fangs got heavy weapon sprue, but not sure about the kneeling legs.
