Saga of Ulfrsteinn blood fists

Recommended Posts

Greating brothers.

Since GW launched the Imperial knight model, I've have been looking for the time between work and family to build and paint one for my wolves. As it happends I now find myself now in a hot sandy place for four months providing ample time to get my geek on.

I have even found time to write a short story to accompany the knigh.

I will post WIP pics sortly and I welcome all C and Cs.

Enjoy.

Saga of Ulfrsteinn Blood Fists.

Gather round my young pups and let me tell you of a mighty hunter who killed a lord of war and became a giant.

I take you now to the war torn surface of Agripinaa during the accursed 13th black crusade. Our brother legion the blood angles were in need, as their final assaults on the primary hive city had been met with near endless numbers of frenzied daemonds.

Our pods slammed down into the rockcrete cityscape, followed by vehicle landing craft. With in hours the ruinous powers were on the back foot after having had their teeth blunted by the ferocity of our wolf brothers’ fury. However, foul khornate daemons still owned the streets while traitorous World Eater's coward in the shattered city.

The Sons of Sanguinius had regained their hold and were now cutting a bloody path through the south of the city. The great wolf, not wanting his brothers out done, ordered the eastern avenues and streets to be taken back from the vial hordes of chaos.

Packs of Greys supported by land raider redeemers and vindicators took to the industrial city to cleanse the streets; they in turn were supported by knights of House Arokon. Not that our brothers needed their help.

Resistance was light as the packs and supporting units spilt up and took to the high raised avenues and blasted out factories.

Armed with his twin power fists Ulfrsteinn lead his pack of Greys through collapsed building fronts, exposed pipe work and arching power cables that leapt and cracked, throwing up shadows of possible enemies that weren’t yet there. His supporting land raider, “Russ’ Fury”, ground fallen rockcrete and glass in to dust while the Paladin Knight “Emperors sorrow” strode over the debris with ease while the child like faces carved in to the broken block work looked on with unblinking eyes. Light strained to penetrate past the immense buildings and through the haze of dust that hung motionless in the air. Vox traffic soon become intermittent giving way too static, the distant sound of battle slowly ebbed away as a numbness fell all around. The air became heavy, almost claustrophobic with the stink of blood, death and the sweet sickly taint of chaos.

Hackles and senses rouse, breath deepened and muscles tightened at the impending combat. Anticipating an ambush Ulfrsteinn slowed his advance and his pack did the same.

Ethereal shapes fleeted in the peripheral, too quick even for our seasoned brother to draw a bead on while a low rumbling growl started to build with a strength and intensity that would have shook the foundations of a mere mortals soul. Loose debris and dust were rained down from the surrounding building while broken glass and spent ammunition casings from previous engagements chattered together around our brother’s feet.

“contact, to the front” came the shout as the ethereal shapes solidified in the gloom ahead. Bolter and melta fire whipped down the street finding their marks, daemon bodies jerked, spasmed and were sent screaming back in to the aether. Those that were not cut down closed in on our brothers with unnatural speed, seemingly unaffected by the rough terrain and soon hand to claw fighting broke out. With the first wave now engaged, traitorous space marines of the World Eaters rose from their cover, futilely targeting the land raider with pistol and grenades while knights battle cannon rounds exploded around them. Sensing easy kills Russ’s Fury advanced towards the Brotherhood, assault cannon and melta blazing it moved. Intent to burn them out with cleansing flame, her crew never saw the trap or the axe fall.

All this time the rumbling had continued to grow, almost forgotten once the shooting has started it had reached unimaginable proportions of rage and blood lust. Unable to contain its fury and the overwhelming need to kill any more, the Lord of Skulls erupted through the manufactorum facade

Ulfrsteinn looked up as he crushed the last of the deamons with his power fists, just in time to see Russ’s Fury cleaved in half and her crew blasted and boiled alive from a torrent of blood spewing forth from the deamon engine. This new threat was beyond them, but that did not deter our brothers.

Battle cannon and stubber round detonated in the side of the deamon engine as the “Emperors Sorrow” switch target to this new threat. Armour plates buckled and tore away as round after round slammed into the beast and its guttural roars of vengeance were answered by the howls of retribution from Ulfesteinns and his pack.

Now young pups, there are brother chapters out there who believe our ranks are filled will only mindless savages. Savages, with no concept of war, that would charge head long into certain death. They are sorely mistaken for we are the wolves of Fenris and the Emperors justice.

But on this day these accusations would hold true.

Blinded by rage and the desire to kill the abomination, Ulfrsteinn pack broke cover. A hail of bolter rounds slashed it to their side felling a few unlucky brothers as the red armoured traitors advanced through the rouble. Now in range our brothers brought their meltas to bear but the gorestorm cannon spoke again.

Their world turned red as the torrent of blood slammed into the pack. Bodies were swept back and dashed against the rubble, armour blistered and cracked and auto senses shrieked and wailed from the sudden onslaught. Unable to handle this extreme corruption and death, their power armour failed and one by one the packs life runes in Ulfrsteinn’s display, blinked out.

From his enclosed cockpit, Tobias Sanzar of house Arokon witnessed the horror (the horrorrrrrr) that played out before him. To see the Emperors finest so easily undone ignited fears hidden deep within his core, ice cold claw racked his chest as feverish sweat ran down his neck. He bit down, fighting this cowardice steak that had taken hold of him, he tried to steel his soul against all the malus and hatred emulating from the hell spawned engine…...

And then the beast roared again, stripping away any resolve he had left.

In a viscose pool of filth and gore, Ulfrsteinn body lay still, steam rising from his blood soaked battle plate……

A cold tasteless wind whipped through his braided locks, he opened his eyes to see that he stood on a cliff edge that looked out in to a dark vast ocean. Below he could hear the squawk of birds and the crashing of waves, his armour and weapons were gone and so were his brothers. He was alone; silently he passed up a prayer to Russ and the all father for forgiveness. He had failed his brothers, if only he could avenge them.

The bellowing roar snapped Ulfrsteinn back into existence, he was alive. His body ached and his armour registered a multitude of system failures. Looking up from hazy blood soaked eyes he could see the hell beast a short distance away. Forcing him-self up with every muscle and sinew protesting against him, he rose. Hidden from view amongst the debris he flexed his power fists and readied his body and mind for the task ahead. He removed his helmet, letting it fall away to the ground and breathed in his surroundings. Focused and now in control his hunter yellow eyes narrowed on the prey.

Tobias was frozen with fear, he had been taken to the brink, had witnessed so much death and destruction and now saw the futile struggle against the truth and death that awaited him. He opened in mind and welcomed it and all that remained now was blood.

As the lord of skulls advanced towards the now stricken knight, Ulfrsteinn took his chance. He covered the distance to his target in seconds and with the power of Russ fuelling his fire he scaled and mounted the hell beast back before the traitors saw him or brought their weapons to bare. Setting his fists to work in a relentless storm of vengeance he smashed, tore and pulverised through armour plating, power cables and deep into the living deamon-engines core. The beast was roaring again but this time with pain and terror, twisting and turning the deamon tried to rid its self of Ulfrsteinn, it failed.

Traitor marines reacting to the deamons death throws were denied a clear shot; they charged head long screaming and braying towards their precious Lord of Skulls, raising their axes to the fore. None made it.

The apocalyptic blast flattened the surrounding buildings, consuming traitor marines and the bodies of our fallen wolf brothers alike. The hewed landraider, “Russ’s Fury” was tosses like a child’s toy to crash through a supporting outer wall, it was buried under steal and rockcrete as the remains of the structure rained down. The now static “Emperors sorrow” was knocked off its feet, shields deflected and absorbed most of the blast causing it to stagger then topple crashing down backwards amongst the rubble. Its machine spirit screamed at the injustice wrought upon it and the failing of the now dead weak willed pilot.

Dust settled on the devastation, the clatter and clamour of battles that still raged around the cityscape flooded to the wake left by the deamons banishment.

Two wolf grey speeders raced up the war torn avenue, sent to investigate why the Great wolf had lost communications with the detachment, the sudden huge energy spike detected by their sensors had hastened and focused their search. Closing in on the fallen knight the speeders slowed and activated their auspexes as residual heat and energy signatures pinged back from the resent battle. As for life signs or even bodies of their fallen brothers there was but only one. The faint reading grew as the speeders swept the edge of a blast creator twice the size of a baneblade, one team covered the other that had jumped down to advanced on the signal.

Buried beneath twisted metal and gore a body lay broken, each arm was a scorched stump ending at the elbow while only one leg remained fully intact. The warriors face had melted, his hair seared away and in places pale skull was visible. His breath was shallow and ragged as aerated blood bubbled around what was left of his nose and mouth. His armour though cracked, blackened and deformed had kept him alive, if only barely.

The marines’ personal transponder identified him as Ulfrsteinn.

Six standard months later aboard the "Pride of Fenris" Ulfrsteinn reopened his eyes but all was black as night. The impenetrable dark was slowly replaced by a green haze, clicks and beeps cycled to their own rhythm, powering up cogitator screens flickered in to life filling his vision. His world became a criss-cross of grid work as information and system checks streamed in columns in-front of him. He tried to look beyond the transparencies, to take stock and comprehend his situation, but all he saw was shrouded in darkness.

Bathed in the green glow, what remained of his body was festooned with cables, tubes and wires.

He clenched and flexed his none-existent fists, not fully understanding how he could still feel them, while the wolf within bucked and riled sensing its muted confinement.

“Welcome back brother”

The deep voice rumbled around his head, carrying a metallic tone from the built in vox speakers.

“What, what has happened to me” His voice was dry and haggard as vocal cords strained having not been used for so long.

The iron priest spoke, his tone light. "Most you know yourself. We recovered and stabilised your broken body then placed in stasis until the wolf priests had deemed you free from taint. The great wolf himself wanted to know how and what had happened so he ordered the vid pics taken from our fleet in high orbit and that of the fallen “Emperors sorrow” to be analysed. You put up quite a fight and were lucky to be alive when we found you".

"Luck had nothing to do with it, I died and the all father sent me back to kill that beast."

"Well brother, your battle it seems was fit for a saga and you have been given a third lease of life."

Series of overhead lights flickered on cutting through the darkness. Ulfrsteinn could now see beyond his confinement and at last he had his answer. Understanding caused newly implanted knowledge to flood his mind and with a mere thought he became one with his knight.

Recovered from the ruined city the “Emperors Sorrow” had been claimed by the Great wolf. House Arokon had demanded the return of the knight, but they were foolish to think they could demand anything from the wolves after they were found wanting in battle.

The wolf and iron priests had set to work cleansing and modifying the knight ready for its new pilot. With the machines sprit appeased and a new lick of paint all that was needed now was a new name....

Pic to follow as soon as I work out why there not loading.

Using photobucket as I always have but now I keep getting "You are not allowed to use that image extension on this community" when ever I try and post. Might start my own gallery here instead.

Cool fluff. I hade a similar idea, but for Iron Hands, as they like dreadnoughts, they should like Knights even more.

But over on the Iron Hands forum people seemed negative, but with cool fluff as yours, it should work.

Do Dreadnoughts hunt, like normal Space Wolves do? Or would they get bogged down in the snow?

@Token Pretty sure Dreadnaughts sleep until they are awoken for battle, because the are all a touch unstable and sleeping prolongs their ability to fight before they break down.

Cool fluff GDD, you write very well, I enjoyed that.

Thanks for the comments dudes, glad you liked my fluff. (sounds wrong)

My main idea behind it was that I wanted it to be a wolve's knight, not just "on loan" from a house.

Fingers crossed these WIP pics work.

Thanks Fenriswolf. Yeh, I had considered magging the face plates as I couldn’t make up my mind which one looked best.

Game wise he could disgard the mask just before an assault fitting in with the fluff.

A few more WIP pics.

Morning brothers, a couple more pics.

I was quite impressed with the quality of the transfers for the knight. I was concerned that they would rip while trying to get them in to position as I've had this in the past. As it turned out it was all good, even with me being quite rough.
The wolfs head was just free hand, so I kept it quite simple.

This is looking great. The write up is superb as always and a notch above my usual script.

Shame a horrible accident will have to happen to it else it will decimate my forces I feel!

However I believe it is time to up the melta production!

WOW!!

The fluff is excellent and I am thrilled to see this kind of thread here!!

Great work on the Knight!! I am planning one for my army in the future and much like Thunder God, I too imagine mine to look like yours!! Thank you for the inspiration, brother!!

End of Line

Your comments are much appreciated guys. Thanks very much.

I still have quite a bit to do, but its getting there and will post some more pics soon.

I plan to add battle damage and weathering at some stage but my nerves are getting the better of me. Sounds daft I know. Will just have to man up and go for it, haha.

@ Scatman, don't you worry. The horrible accident your referring to, that would see to the demise of the knight  goes by the name of RAF movers. Best get a shed load of bubble wrap from the stackers and some kit insurance sorted.

Your comments are much appreciated guys. Thanks very much.

hahaha, i know the feeling. Especially when you take all the time to be as meticulous as you have been in painting it!

If I can recommend some techniques for the battle damage and weathering where you can basically make mistakes and sort them out if you dont like it without affecting your paint job.... that way you can play around a bit.

1) Use of oils for battle damage (it works best if you matt/satin varnish first, because you can just wipe off what you dont want completely before drying! and drying time is 4-6hrs. so lots of headroom) suggest watching video

 - paint chipping effect

(10:26 mins onwards)

 - oil wash technique

2) Can do weathering/rust/mud streaks using either pastels (i know right....) or oils again

from 11:00)

These 2 guys are my favourite mini artists. they have awesome vid's on techniques.

Looking really forward to seeing more progress pics! keep them coming :)

Get some damage on it to back up the story. It deserves it.

As for travel options, I would never let the movers touch it. Hand luggage all the way!

@scatman, hand luggage would be the way to go dude, but flying RAF air you don't get any.

Thanks for the links ZooZ, both vids were very helpful. Might have to get my self a spray gun now after seeing how the pod was painted.

I have managed to put the sponge technique to work and had a go with "typhus Corrosion". See what you all think.

Looking good and about right I'd say.

Ah forgot about the hand luggage restriction. Hold luggage with plenty of bubble wrap then. Have you magnetised for transport break down?

  • 2 weeks later...

Update time. This would have been sooner but as always I became side tracked, this time with our 2014 Solstice advance.

So need to finish one project before starting another!!!!

Anyway after adding more weathering and battle damage this is what I've ended up with...

knight legs

knight side legs

knight left leg

kinght cannon

knight left pad

knight right pad

knight right pad 2

knight rear

A bit pic heavy I know, C and C welcome as always.

Great work brother!

I paticularly like the photo of the left knight led and the gun barrel. Even although photos seldomly give tones and shades justice, I think your metalwork is very realistic and very well done. My only suggestion would be some smoke or slight rusting on the exhaust ports to match the level of weathering and battle damage.

Im very interested to see the end results as well as the base you will be using for the model. I think your knight is my personal favourite in examples of a sw variant I have seen thus far.

/saltues and tips hat :)

To echo what has been said already brother that is a damn awesome looking knight, you've done an amazing job on the weathering especially, I think we can all empathise with the feeling of fear when sitting down to weather a model we have poured our hearts and souls into but you've got it spot on, great job thumbsup.gif

Thanks again for the fantastic comments guys, gives me that warm fussy feeling. (no I haven't peed myself!)

Its always good to get your feed back (good or bad) and now I know that at least my painting is better than my gaming. Scatmandoo can vouch for that haha.

ZOOZ, your spot on, the exhausts look far too new and shiny in relation to the rest. Don't know why I didn't spot that.  As for the base it will have to wait until I'm back home in Jan and I can then  have a good rummage through my bits box to do it justice.  Shame really as I wouldn't have minded getting the knight squared away before then.

Till next time dudes.
