FlamingWalnut
Hey there! Been getting back into 40k and figured I'd ask around and see how the new rules were treating everyone. Been a fan of Space Wolves (never got into them as they were over represented at my last group, but whatever). Since they are a possibility this time around, I have one big question...What does your supplement really DO? I mean, with most supplements, I can see a BIT of the why to them (except for Black Legion and Ghazghul, but those are different threads...) but the Champions of Fenris is just Logan Grimnar, right? In the last book, Grimnar just gave you Termie troops. Is that all there is to this supplement? That and his special sled? There's got to be more than that....So, besides that, how is the new codex treating you all? I love the Viking Tale kind of feel to the Space Wolves so maybe I will partake in them...especially with the Ally rules I can mix and match a bit. :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/297883-whats-the-difference-between-the-codex-and-supplement/ Share on other sites
Frater Cornelius
Codex contains your core army rules. You can not play without it. A supplement usually comes with 1-2 modifications to your army. For example a different FOC, relics/equipment or making a certain unit into troops. It does not come with unit rules, however. Those are in the codex. So a supplement can be used to enhance and/or change how your army is built and/or operated, but is still based on the units and core rules given in it's parent codex. Bryan Blaire
It's not just Logan, it's a set of special rules for Logan's personal Great Company, a new Warlord Traits table, six new Relics for the Great Company, a new detachment, six new formations plus a seventh that is a combination of the previous six. Additionally, it includes three Altar of War missions, along with six historically based Echoes of War missions. It also has some nice pics gallery and 32 pages of fluff on the Great Wolf, his company and their timeline. It's a pretty neat book overall, if you are just looking for something "extra." Valerian
Of the supplements released so far, Champions of Fenris is the only one that seems to be really worthwhile. Â In fact, around here in The Fang, it seems that most players are using the Champions Detachment and Formations as their default, rather than just sticking with what's in the base codex. Leif Bearclaw
Of the supplements released so far, Champions of Fenris is the only one that seems to be really worthwhile. I'd disagree slightly there. CoF is indeed a solid book, but Crimson Slaughter is also pretty good and went down quite well with Chaos players. So there's at least two worthwhile supplements . Frater Cornelius
Mainly because our troops and their transports are so painfully average and we do better avoiding that tax. The relics are so much better as well. Â As for the quality, I only see two supplement in 40k being used at high end (or as high end as their respective codecies can get them) and those are Champions of Fenris and Farsight Enclave. The other ones do not really do anything that spectacular. I haven't checked the DE one though. Rune Priest Jbickb
I love champions of Fenris. It's my go to. I also play Logan Grimnar's great company though. FlamingWalnut
Alright...how often do the extra Missions actually get used. With so many new missions in the supplement, I assume it's pretty much just casual only? Though I guess that's more of a question for my playgroup. XDI heard somewhere about an All Scout Space Wolves? Is that possible? I remember Scouts being awwwwesome for Space Wolves (Veterans and whatnot). Frater Cornelius
Scouts lost their OBEL rule and are thus only mediocre. You can play only scouts now though. They are Elite and COF FOC (:D) has Elite as mandatory, not Troops. No problem; I don't really pay attention to the Chaos stuff. Good for them that they've got a decent supplement, though. I remember Scouts being awwwwesome for Space Wolves (Veterans and whatnot). Alas, they haven't been awesome since 5th Edition.
