Viable ideas for a newcomer to the Rout?

I picked up the Stormclaw box set last week, and now that I've got hold of some, I'm really taken by the Space Wolves models and want to start an actual army.

So far I've got what amounts to a set of assault terminators and a tactical box, along with a captain.

Looking at the codex I can see a couple of options, and I'd like some opinions on them.

Option 1- Skyclaw mob: An army of novices geared towards assault, buffed by leaders and hq in terminator armor. Some coming out of the really ugly flying brick, and some coming out of a landraider crusader, some coming out of drop pods or razorbacks. Also sky claws. Why not? (this appeals to me because my filthy xenos dark eldar army is incredibly shooty and I'd like to try something new)

Option 2-  The Vilka Fenryka: A mix of tactical assault units, some dropping in pods, some carried by razorbacks, maybe a flying brick. Firepower with the ability to counterassault is also appealing. I would field a mixed bloodclaw pack in either the brick or a landraider.

Option 2- Completely tactical. Grey Hunters in razorbacks with heavy support. Not so appealing since I already have a really shooty army, but the build looks good on paper- especially with a flyer on standby.

I am a cross of fun and competitive play styles.

Thanks in advance.

How do you feel about thunderwolf cavalry?  The Models  ( its totally okay for you not to like the asthetic)  I  find that they are really strong and a lot of fun to build and paint.  O w O  your particular options all seem pretty cool , I  like the completely tactical  one with the razorbacks and the stormwolf. But Yea Im pretty new as well and Im really lovin the Cav.

I really think I'll wait on the TW cav. I'm not big on the models at all, and they are very expensive. I like to plan out an army before I start making major purposes since it saves money.

So far my favorite list I've done up on quartermaster has been a mix of the first two. With drop pods and homing beacons, you can drop without scattering half of your army. With bloodclaws coming in a flying brick (its an ugly model but flyers are compulsory in my area) you've got a good assaulty wrecking ball. In those drop pods I'd probably field grey hunters or blood claws with terminator leaders, and loads of melta. But I do love the idea of a bunch of howling blood claws streaming out of LRCs and Flyers. I also want to win at least some of the time, lol

I like most of your ideas, the Skyclaw mob is the one I have the hardest time with, but it might work would have to see how you do stuff. Don't over look scouts too much. They can be a pretty good back field CC unit. I am a fan of Grey Hunters and tend to run 3+ squads when I play, so I would say go there. I do have some crazy combat units that I can only really do for having collected so many models over the years.

I've got about 40 unpainted blood claws and grey hunters coming in from Ebay this weekend and I'm going to be putting them all to use.

Thank you for the clarification of the beacon rule. It's still pretty handy.

It looks to me like drop pod assault is much better for Space Wolves than the other companies considering they can shoot and counterattack. I'm kitting out most of my grey hunters to represent that. I will also be grabbing a few razorbacks soon. Eventually I'll get a stormwolf. Though really, those are fugly. I'd rather spend the scratch on a fire raptor from forgeworld or something. Maybe later.

I really do like the idea of a bloodclaw mob supported by a terminator leader unit. That's just a great idea, though it would probably be a good idea to support them with base of fire.

A drop force is very viable and quite competitive. There is a bloke with one in around my area, and he actually has a fire raptor as well. Very competitive build indeed!!

I like the Skyclaw idea, but I think some folks are having decent success with Jumper Wolf Guard as well. You get a lot more options out of them, of course at a higher cost.

Sounds like you've got a good grasp on what you're looking to play though.

End of Line

Thanks. I've played a few armies, from Black Templars to Dark Eldar. This is my triumphant return to power armor. Yeah I think jumping wolf guard is a great deathstar option. You could also use them as a mobile firebase with combi meltas or whatnot.
