So basically, I was just wondering on how people get fantastic white finishes like the ones in this photo:

What paints do people use etc. Also this photo is actually originally from the B&C but idk where.

Thanks.

It looks like a black base and from there, you work your way up to white from grey with each coat being a thin one and leaving the shading in the recess. For example, the classic method was:

Chaos Black -> Codex Grey -> Fortress Grey -> Skull White

In my opinion, a wet palette is essential when using the older paints as it helps them flow better.

A much easier way, is to start from a Skull White undercoat, thin down a light grey with water (administratum grey is good) then use it as a wash all over the white areas.

Then you can (Depending on how heavy you've made your wash, experiment here to find a happy medium) highlight with white again.

You can work up from black, but its alot more effort, for not much better results.

The tricky part is painting certain parts white, and certain parts dark like with those Raven Guard. ^  In that case i'd probably prime the arms white, seperate from the rest of the model.

I find that I can get a better white from a black undercoat, than black from a white undercoat.

I used to go Black, astronomican grey, multipe thin coats of white

Now, Black, multiple thin coats of ceramite white.

A grey layer would be ideal, and make it brighter.

I’ve not even looked at the photo, but will give you a very simple and easy solution: spray your model white, then paint all other colours over that.
