bsucbe
Entirely hypothetical as I have nothing like the money or space required to start this. However as I have gazed longingly over this thread I have been wondering where would you even start and what kind of investment is required for something like 1500 points. Would be thinking death guard if I did cross the line. Live the fluff from the BL novels and the imagery of the hard faced marines holding the line. Would appreciate any feedback. Leif Bearclaw
The best way to start is to pick a Legion, then establish a colour scheme you like, and can stomach painting an entire force of. Once you've done that, you then have to decide what models to get. If there's a 'stand out' model/unit you like, then that's probably your first port of call (if I was doing DG, Grave Wardens would be my first port of call). Otherwise, getting an amount of basic Legionaries with Bolters is always a good place to start. Then it's a good idea to decide what you want to focus your force on, what RoW you want etc. This will dictate future purchases, as (for example) there's little point buying Drop Pods if you then decide to run armoured assault. Castiel
Just try writing a few lists using Battlescribe or similar if you know what legion you are interested in. Get a good idea of what you would want to buy and then stick to that. Slips
The best way to get a point-dense but relatively low cost Heresy Era Army using ONLY forgeworld would be to roll a Pride of the Legion list and spam terminators in transports and otherwise. I have a 3500 point list that has 41 infantry models + HQ. 25 of those being Terminators. Include into that that I'm bringing 2 contemptor mortis' for AA and Fire Support + other and 1 Spartan, 1 LR Phobos, 1 LR Achilles and a Sicarian, thats not a lot of models for such a high points limit. They are, however, tough as nails. Consider that if you max out all 4 troops slots with maxed out Tac Squads, you're looking at 80 Tactical marines for 1k points, no upgrades. That leaves you with 500 points to mess around with HQ and Support. An extreme case, but yeah. As the others have said. Get a solid idea of what Legion and what you want to play before committing to anything. Quixus
Just don't try to make Hammernators using only FW parts, that is unless you go Salamander. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/297967-where-to-start/#findComment-3833592 Share on other sites
bsucbe
The choosing the legion I have done, death guard, love the colour and mentality, would like them to be pre heresy though. As for theme like the trench warfare aspect of it, what units fit this, was thinking standard tacticals, breachers and assault/despoilers. Leif Bearclaw
You'll probably want support and/or heavy support squads too, if you're going for an infantry focus (which it sounds like you are with the trench warfare thing). Especially as Legion Tacticals can't take any special/heavy weapons. Theyre the only ones with Storm Shields....Or Alpha Legion if you jack Firedrakes. d@n
Generically your best of with 2x20 squads of tactical marines and a h.q that's the starting point for most 30k armys. There aren't. But Imperial Fists terminators all have the option to take a Vigil Pattern Storm Shield. And, well, thunderhammers as usual. Means you can use the assault terminator box to make them and have them fit. Helps that Imperial Fists are known to have field(ed?) the most Indomitus pattern Terminator armor. As for IF specific terminators, there are just the shoulder pad upgrades from FW that are specific to them/Crimson Fists. Slips
Oh yeah, forgot those haha! Especially since you can make "Templar" terminators for 30k. Which is what I did with my Tartaros Terminators, just gave them the BT Storm Shields instead. Another thing I forgot to mention :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/297967-where-to-start/#findComment-3836396 Share on other sites
bsucbe
Because I apparently can't help but stare longingly at the models I have spent a fair bit of time on the forgeworld site. Which armour would be most appropriate for the death guard? Would be doing loyalists, not the rotting version, have nurgle warriors of chaos and ironically have had my fill of bloated stomachs. Phalanx Warder
As far as saving money goes there are a couple of approaches you can take. The more Puritan Heresy lovers may disagree with this but thats ok. First a couple of questions. 1. Q. do you plan on playing the list you build or is it more of a show army? 2. What's more important to you, playing games or the hobby itself? 3. do you even fluff bro? The look and feel of HH games sets itself miles apart from 40k IMHO never mind the sweet rules, the entry costs are high and put people off because of this. If playing games is more your thing there is nothing stopping you from building the list with minimal FW resin to drive the costs down. Ebay is your friend.... pick up a bunch of painted 40k tac marines on the cheap and start stripping and painting them. You could buy the shoulder pads to give you the DG iconography or the decal sheet. You could use this as a means to an end, slowly replace minis with your favorite MK FW armor over time. Buy magnets and use them. Contemptors and magnets are your friend, just 1 body and magnets you can make any configuration, the arms are cheap and as time goes on you can buy a new body to fall in on all the arms you have been using. Find others who are into FW also and make combined orders, this will help you reach the magic free shipping number and you can make small manageable purchases.
