Classic Ultramarines

As many of you know, GW hasn't really released anything worthwhile for the Ultramarines in years, and one could almost say they were dropped and discontinued back in 4th Edition. With each new release I get more and more alienated from my favourite Chapter and 40K in general. (Wolf sleds don't exactly help.)

But I recently stumbled upon Irondog's Ultramarines, which did help to lift my Spirit a bit. So for all you old dogs who miss the good old days, or for all you green ones who have never seen an actual Ultramarine before: This is how Ultramarines are supposed to look!

I know we have some great talent here on this board who have painted some great classic Ultramarine models (I'm thinking Tranc? Probably others...), but I am not frequenting the painting sections, so I am not that familiar with them. If anyone else has painted his Ultramarines in the classic scheme, feel free to add them to this thread.

There was a picture of a basic ultramarine squad in a GW product magazine from way back in the day, say 2001. There was a large fantasy ork covered in heavy armor and wielding a huge axe. That one squad was the main attraction for space marines to me. They looked so clean and really really cool.

Seeing these ultras, despite the part of me that looks down at green bases and silly weapon color choices, reinvigorates those feelings. To do it all again but make that little picture come true.

Great looking Ultras.

Whoa, I am remembered blush.png

I don't think I've posted many photos since the warp storm of 2012 (i.e., forum upgrade) ate my painting blog, though I can still find echos of it in the Way Back Machine. Being married now, with a 3 month old infant, probably hasn't helped my painting productivity either msn-wink.gif

While I never set out to fully re-create a "classic" Ultramarines army, I certainly drew inspiration from the style.

Does this guy count, even though he's 6th company?

Wow, these take me back. As someone who started way back in the rogue trader days, I have seen the progression of the boys in blue. I must say I am not pleased. I still believe that 2nd Edition was the glory days of the UM's.

And the thing is, the ultras could be amazing. Like crazy amazing, just the whole LEGIO XIII Roman vibe, the tyrannical vets, etc. Etc. And let's not forget, that ultraMar is basically a very prosperous pocket empire. So where is the awesome war gear?

Wait, I'm ranting aren't I?

I am willing to negotiate the red bolters, but the yellow trims are a must. They are supposed to be colour coding, not shiny decoration.

GW had removed colours from the Space Wolves, Blood Angels and Dark Angels as well, but they have since returned to the 2nd Edition schemes (for Blood Angels at least for that one special edition Captain). So there is hope that they will wise up and do the same with the Ultramarines.

I really like the red bolters on the classic models. Adds that little extra to the models.

The Gold trim is odd. On its own, in a vacuum, it looks absolutely great. But when you compare with the other companies, with there matte, bright colours, it looks out of place.

As I am starting a Corinthian Crusade army, my ultras will thus.

Darker blue

Red (darker) weapons casing

More white armour varients (anyone else rember this?)

Yellow trim Co 2nd co.

Roman bling emphasized

And such stuff

So kinda an updated old school thing.
