Basic Codex or Supplement? Need Help

So I'm going to be making a Space Wolves army after I probably finish my 2000 points of Salamanders and start my Warriors of Chaos or Fantasy so I'm getting into the planning phase of my Wolves. Right now I have maybe 60+ wolves, 20 grey hunters, 20 blood claws, a squad of long fangs with Missles, 5 terminators to be put together then the rest still on sprues. I do also have 3 TWC plus herald deathwolf (was using as a custom wolf lord in 5th) so I'm not lacking on Wolves to use.

Right now I'm just planning my Space Wolves, getting my Wolf Lord how I want him in the new book (I'm making him in memory of my grandpa so this is the hardest part) and deciding if I should use the supplement because its better(? I don't know) or the main codex because it gives you the ability to have objective securing troops.

My idea right now is to have my Wolf Lord on thunderwolf with some TWC charge up and that's really it. The old list for 5th had 4 drop pods with two grey hunter units and 2 blood claws, the wold lord and TWC charge in and I had a pack of long fangs with ml deal with light armour and hordes if I needed. I had meltas and ways of dealing with heavy armour in the squads but with the new book I really don't know since the changes. I think I'm going to change what I want to do with the list and have it more CC and assault oriented especially with the new flyer (I don't understand the hate on it, use it maybe ugly but it gets guys to the front line alive and kills things what could the wolves as for) so my original idea for a drop pod list is kind of out if I want to have flyer spam or at least two but then I'm waiting for blood claws to arrive. Drop pods might still be good but I also then would need to have the points to make it worth wild.

My main issue with the planning stage is I can't decide if I should use the Codex to get objectives or should I go with the Supplement and use a WUD? I'm new and never played in 5th I got into wolves at the end of the last codex and was just building everything so I haven't played a game with the Space Wolves so I need some help from the members of the Rout to guide this young pup. I don't know what the meta is at my local GW so I'm just going to make something that's fluffy and fun but also can win games.

Thanks in advice, if you have any questions I'll try to respond tomorrow while I'm bored at work.

You will need to codex either way. The supplement is not playable without it.

Personally, I like the supplement, but it is expensive and only realpy worth it if you want to capitalize on WG or TWC melee builds or Dread build. In pretty much all other cases the regular codex will do.

Well, if you want melee go Supplement. If you want ranged go Codex. Simple as that. They are also not mutually exclusive since you can play 2 detachments in one army. The Supplement also has some decent formations. Go nuts. They are all part of a complete breakfast army.

I agree. For maximum relic options, and bonuses, I plan to run a lord, twc and wolf guard as champions of fenris, to take advantage of the Kingsguard, and then the rest of my army as combined Arms.

Right now I think I'm just going to use the main Codex because of the fluffy stuff I can do with it which for my wolves is the main reason I am doing the army. The relics in the main book just have the right relics to make my Wolf Lord how I want it to be.
