littlbitz
Ok I'm gearing up for my next GT, The Mechanicon, this will be my 3rd outing at a GT with my Wolves, and of course my 3rd different list. I had a practice game against the Army my son plans on playing at the GT last evening. We played with 5 objectives on the board and a simple Dawn of War deployment with no night fight. Here is the list I played WGBL, TWM, Frost Axe, Storm Shield, Runic Armor WGBL, Bike, Frost Sword, Storm Shield WGBL, Bike, Thunder Hammer, Storm Shield Dreadnought with Assault Cannon and Heavy Flamer Drop Pod Iron Priest with TWM Blood Claws x7 Power Axe, Pack Leader with Power Fist Storm Wolf Transport with MM sponsons Swift Claw Bikers x5 +1 (attackbike) Power Fist, Pack Leader has a Power Fist, Melta Gun, Attack bike has Heavy bolter TWC x4 Thunder Hammers x4 and Storm Shields x4 TWC x4 Thunder Hammers x3 and Storm Shields x3 My Son used his Storm Trooper army with no less than 8 Taurox primes with guys and an assortment of ap 2 and 3 weaponry He won the roll for first turn and shifted, those Primes are fast vehicles, he was able to shift and get shots on almost everyone. His shooting drew first blood as he managed to kill my Iron Priest, his shooting was impressive and I was quite concerned as I would have to weather it for another turn In my turn I did what I had to and rushed forward with everything and dropped my pod in with Dread. My dread did its job, wreaking a Taurox and then dying to multiple Meltagun shots. In his 2nd turn he deep struck a couple of units and the command with 10 twin-linked Plasma shots reminded me why I take more than just the 2 Storm Shields recommend in a TWC unit. My Blood claws and Storm Wolf refused to come in, I split my forces and charged as many different units as I could. The Storm Wolf eventually came on, (turn 4) but by then it was almost over, turn five saw the Storm Troopers tabled... My next practice game is going to be against an Ork army that has a Stompa... As long as I can get the extra 3 Thunder Wolves finished I think this is the list I'm going with, I liked the way the Bikers absorbed some fire power, and they are able to strike out and hit something as well, making them a worthwhile addition to the army. Frater Cornelius
Don't you think you are going a little overboard with TWC costs? You could get in another TWC unit if you drop TH/SS on 2 members each. I1 across the board will hurt you in melee because you are bound to fail a few saves and losing 85 points before it got to strike does not seem fun. littlbitz
You are right I am going a little overboard, but I like to consider it more uh "over cautious" lol I have encountered lots of AP2 spam, Grav-Guns, Plasma, Melta (ap1), and I find I lose the 2 Storm Shields quickly, so would rather have the extra protection personally Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/298085-preparing-for-mechanicon-gt/#findComment-3836408 Share on other sites
Frater Cornelius
The shields are the lesser of the two evils. It is the hammers that eat the most points. Jochteas
Isn't powerfist effectively the same as Thunder hammer but 5 cheaper? I mean unless I miss something in the rules concussive with an I1 weapon seems useless. What about Dropping the 7 Thunder hammers make 2 guys a TWC unit powerfist, and 2 guys a TWC unit Wolf Claw (for rending + shredding goodness). Then change the Thunder hammer to a Power axe on the WGBL Bike. This would give you enough points to give your IP 4 Cyber wolves, which are 1, great ablative wounds 2, pretty awesome in themselves and 3, let's your IP be a lot more survivable and he can wield that nasty AP 1 servo arm. The THs are good for dealing with monstrous creatures, as they are concussive making round two of combat a bit easier. littlbitz
that is my thought exactly, causing just one wound, then striking at the same time in the next combat is huge. It ensures max carnage, sure its situational, but thats their mission, and these days I see lots of those guys... Jochteas
Yeah but you still have a list with 9 thunder hammers. That's too much, if you need all that choppa you'd do better with more units, with all that spent on weapons you could have 6 more thunder wolves and change left over, that's 30 extra attacks on a charge. You'd do better to drop the warhammers, say the 7 on the twc groups, gives you enough points to get another IP on a thunder wolf, give that IP and your other IP 3 cyber wolves, and have enough left over to outfit your last TWC with a shield so both have 4. Then you run an IP with each TWC pack, you would have 3 tough ablative wounds and surrounded by 4 shielded TWC units, and with (on a charge) 5 Str 9 AP 1 or AP 2 with Concussive hits you can destroy tanks or tyranid alike AND since the IP are characters they could move around, you could have 2 of the IP in 1 pack, and then that would be 6 wolves and 6 mounted guys, enough guys the Toughness of the unit is still 5, but on a charge you'd have 10 Str 9 AP 2 concussive attacks if you really wanted one group just to completely wipe out a unit. Or separate them and charge 4 units at once and let the Cyber wolves eat the overwatch with easy Lo,S! Fenhunter
Less hammers also means you can buy Cyberwolves for your IP to act as ablative wounds. Also, i reccomend a WBGL with the Krakenbone Sword, it is NASTY Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/298085-preparing-for-mechanicon-gt/#findComment-3836903 Share on other sites
littlbitz
I just don't know, I hear what you guys are saying about me having too many hammers. But the recommendations leave me wanting. Even with an extra 30 attacks, that means about 15 hit, on AV13 I might strip 2-3 hull points from a Knight Titan? I need them to die. I've faced those lists with 3 Rip Tides, and 3 Knight Titan thingys in one 1850 list, and it seems there is no such thing as too many Thunder Hammers... I do wish I could squeeze some Cyber Wolves in, some ablative wounds would be nice, maybe ill play with the numbers a bit more. I also like the Krakenbone sword idea, but that requires a new Character model, and I don't have the time to get one done. (it is on my to do list next week though) I'll probably make a few minor tweaks, then hear echoes of "I told you so" in my head all weekend! hahahahahahahaha Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/298085-preparing-for-mechanicon-gt/#findComment-3837958 Share on other sites
