Gloss varnish and washing.

Recommended Posts

I have recently come across the method o painting where you prime a model, do all your base coats, then gloss varnishing it, followed by washing it and then purity sealing them to take the shine off it. I know Mark Bedford from Forgeworld uses this technique to paint models very quickly and they look awesome. I was just wondering if anyone here uses this technique, if they have any photos of there models and most of all, what gloss varnish people use. Thanks

Hm.  I do a gloss varnish followed by an oil paint wash on my Broken Arrows.  It takes some getting used to, white spirit fumes sting the eyes, the wash requires constant stirring to keep from separating, and the drying time is unpredictable (none of which are problems the pros on youtube seem to have), but it works pretty well.

Not sure how other washes fair on a glossed surface though.

I don't do this myself since my airbrush sucks and it's a PITA to use, but I've seen a lot of folks airbrush Future (or Kleer, across the pond) floor polish before they weather. I use Future for lots of stuff, but not before I do oil paint weathering or washes. I've heard it really helps with control, but I guess I've never really had a problem.

Are you trying to achieve a flat look or something in between flat and gloss?  If it's flat your after just dull coat them and off you go. Otherwise I'd try the technique you suggested on test model first

Thank all for the replies. It is a dull coat I'm after, it was mainly what gloss people use, before I dull it down. I have an airbrush, but I've never used ir for more than basecoats, so not sure whether to spray the gloss on, or paint it on. I've seen on YouTube that humbrol do an acrylic gloss varnish, which can be sprayed on or brushed. I know the wash Mark uses is 50% Lahmian Medium 25% Nuln Oil and 25% Seraphim Sepia, this applied over the gloss achives a smooth wash with no tide or stain marks after it's dried.

I use Future/Klear Floor Polish through an arbrush for my gloss coat, followed by oils and/or acrylics for my washes depending on my mood. Use Vallejo Matte varnish again through an airbrush for the matte coat. Then acrylic glazes and highlights to finish.

Thank you again for the replies, Ive got some spare marines kicking around, so I'll do a test model and see how I get on. I'll post the results in WIP if anyone is interested.

Yeah, I'd love to see a comparison of the same wash on an unvarnished vs. glossed marine. It seems like a lot of extra work, but if it's worth it...
