The Bloody 12th, children of a broken God

"We thought the Nails would bring us closer to him. We thought they would show our love for him. The Nails took our love, our compassion, and turned them to hate and anger and rage. They bite and they stab and they goad and we lose ourselves.
And we do not care.

We are truly our fathers children, for he does not care either. Both of us, lost to the Nails. But only one of us chose this."

Good evening everybody. Its been a while since I have posted anything of use here on the B&C.

I've been working on these guys on and off for a while and it is only just recently that I have really started picking up some momentum. I've always had an interest in the 12th legion ever since Jez Goodwin sculpted the Khârn model I should imagine.

Way back in 2006 I was part of a little group called the Pre Heresy forum which has since become The First Expedition forum. The mods at the time ran a painting competition and I took it as an opportunity to re visit the World Eaters an focus on a bit of background from the late 90's.

This is the model that I did. As you can see he is a Librarian. This caused a bit of uproar at the time with people telling me that the 12th didn't have a librarius, which has since been dis proven. My inspiration was an article in the citidel journal that introduced Scyrak the slaughterer into the background, he who sacrificed the legions chief Librarian to Khorne. So ever since then I have had an interest in the Librarians of the 12th legion and Scyrak has held a special place in my heart, so much so that he will be making an appearence at some point in this force.

So plans.....the theme of the army has started out as the betrayal on Istvann. With this in mind I am building a force using the orbital assault rite of war. The intention is to be able to play some big games showing the decent of Angron and the rest of the legion to the surface to finish off what the firestorm failed too.

And suddenly PICTURES

The first part of a twenty man tactical squad, photos taken on the lovely spyral prime board at warhammer world.

I've gone for a forgeworld style of painting on this army which is a huge departure from my usual style of painting. In all honesty its been liberating and I have thoughly enjoyed daubing blood all over them!

Thats all for this evening, I do have a load more pictures ready to show you but I don't want to to get too board reading through a massive post to begin with.

Please c&c to your hearts content, cheery byeeeeeeeeeeee!

It's been a while since I last spoke to you Fab - miss your Castigators force a great deal! Knowing that you and JackDaw are friends is a funny coincidence. I am liking your World Eaters a great deal and hope to see more of them. My favourite this far is the one using the chain bayonet to eviscerate his enemies!

Will we see a battle report soon?

Cheers Guys.

@ Pearson 73, cheers dude!

@ Molotov, yeah its been a while. I've still got the Castigators but I've pretty much stopped playing 'vanilla' 40k. I did notice that he had been sending you 'packages', he gets around a bit does our Jackdaw. You'll see more soon no worries about that, I've got fair chunk painted already and I put together another 20 marines over the   weekend. As for a battle report, you may see some snap shots from terra in the future.

@ Darth Potato, cheers fella. They have graced the table together and its something we plan on doing but Jackdaw is working on models as individuals where as mine are the nameless mob of frothing loonies so it all depends on him really.

Gents, I can confirm that these chaps are even nicer in the flesh - and the Mark IV Assault chaps that you will no doubt be seeing soon enough are sweeter than these. As Fab mentioned, his Eaters and my Angels are sharing some background, so expect to see some nods to each other across both our threads - first blood game wise has already gone to the Bloody Twelfth, but the Angels will rise....

And hey, I'm working on my Angels in batches...kinda. 5 at a time counts as a batch, right?

Looking good. I have a couple of critiques. I think that the gun casings should be a different colour than white, to break up the large blocks of it. Also, it sounds kinda stupid, but in some of your models, the white looks very white. It is smoothly painted on, (which is epicly done by the way) but I feel that it lacks contrast. Perhaps a black wash, then re highlight it up to white. Does this make sense?

The guy with two chain axes looks crazy cool. Is that a bloody hand print on his face? Is this self inflicted, or did someone slap him in the face. That could explain why he looks so angry.

Keep up the good work, and I echo the requests to see these guys hanging out with JackDaw's Angels.

Dallo

Thanks for your comments chaps, I shall try and answer the critiques first. The white is done with a base coat of grey primer and then a zenithal highlight of white with an airbrush. It then gets a 50/50 wash of badab black and asurman blue in all of the recesses, once dry I re high light with white. So in 'real life' there is quite a bit of contrast but the daylight bulbs on my desk seem to bleach the white in the photos.

@ Depthcharge12, I've seen the 12th done with weapons casing like that but I tend to think they look too blue so I will be sticking with white and trying to break up that colour with weathering and blood spatter.

@ Brother Dallo, it is a hand print. Probbably awarded to him by an officer for an act of outstanding violence.

Ok on to some more models, this is my second assault squad.

Please excuse the photos they are not the greatest, white seems to be a tricky colour to photograph with out it getting all glarey.

These chaps are my favourite. Posing is spot on. Lighting wise, someone suggested to me putting a sheet of white paper or a cloth over the lamps themselves - should diffuse the light a bit and remove the glare while still providing the illumination, if that makes sense

^^ This.

If you don't have photographic diffusion gel sheets near at hand, a sheet or two of white printer paper or a white tshirt slipped in there between your light source and the model can cut a good deal of glare out.

Just make sure it's a clean ttshirt ^_^

  • 10 months later...

Ok so its been sometime since I've posted anything up on here, but that doesn't mean I haven't been painting. My other hobby is medieval reenactment and with the 600th anniversary of Azincourt being this year I've had little time for the GW hobby. However its time that this project got some much needed attention and a bit of a reboot. One of the things I have done is gotten myself a light diffusing tent as I found white to be really tricky to photograph propperly so hopefully the images I post will be more representative of what I've actually painted. So onto some photos and a bit of chat too.

This guy was truly a joy to paint and I don't think I've ever enjoyed painting a model quite this much. It was great to try out a few new things on him like using green washes on the bronze to help lessen the 'brown' nature of the armour. Hopefully you like him as much as I do, more to come a bit later.

Right next up is the first of my 10 man tacticals squads. I've done 20 tacticals in total allowing me to run either 2 squads or 1 blob squad.
