Terminators Don't Shave Their Legs?

Sorry, but I figured a dumb thread name would get your attention.  But now that you're here!

The backs of Terminator legs vex me.  There is the piping on the lower legs, which I think looks pretty cool, especially when you pick it out with another color (typically metallics).  Now, my problem with this is the molds themselves.  On several different varieties of the legs, these pipes are...'warped' isn't the right term, but they aren't pipes anymore.  There's one on the GK sprue where that piece turns into a solid wedge on one side, running up half the length of the leg.  Clearly, you can't paint the whole thing metallic, because suddenly you have no idea what the hell it is!

Even if I didn't pick them out as a different color, I paint black, which means I can either highlight those catastrophic designs or leave a big void on the back of my model.  Other armies could simply wash the recesses and be done with it, though.

For those who do pick out these spots in different colors, what is your solution to this dilemma?  I had to resort to simply using different legs when I made my Terminators, because I didn't know how to approach it (and I had a deadline if memory serves).

Yeah, I hate that...  Dont do a different color but I try to highlight and lowlight where the edge or "pipe" is supposed to be not where it actually is...

Edit:  Then I do not take pictures of that...  Ever...  apparently...

The Grey Knight ones annoyed me that much I took a knife to them and tried to 'fix it'. Put it this way, I didn't try it again after the first few as it was fiddly to tidy up after carving the plastic out. But then I wasn't trying to paint them a different colour so leaving them worked out ok if you don't look at the back of the models to often.

I think I'd probably try to paint it where the shape actually should be and keep it neat. Then just highlight it to suggest a more 3D look.

You got me...

I literally hate Terminator trim, it's awful. I never know what I should pick out or not. I hadn't on some World Eaters Terminators in a pre-heresy scheme, and then I decided I should - now I'm not entirely happy, but happier it's not just white again.

Trim on Chaos Terminators - is literally the worst thing ever.

That's what I do as well.

Those things happen due to the casting process. If there is something very prominent I don't like I just take out my knife with a sharp blade and carve it into what I think it is supposed to be.

Most of the purity seals and piping on SM (old - don't know about the new tacticals yet) legs and the like used to be there only to hide spots that would have required undercuts in the mold otherwise.

Seriously. Think about it. Before the battle Brother Chaplain Pious-what's-his-name kneels down to affix an oath of moment to your ankles only for you to run through a desert/jungle/ruins/mud with a piece of pergament stuck to your foot for the next few days.

Doesn't exactly make a lot of sense even from an in-universe POV, aside from the fact that nobody puts medals or something like that on their shins.

Just cut if off and shape it the way it's supposed to be.

If it was easy to cut off and make it smooth, I wouldn't have much of a problem with the issue.  Unfortunately, it often isn't, especially on one particular pair of Gray Knight legs.  That slanted shape runs more than halfway up the calf.

Unfortunately, when it comes to my Templars I already chose to highlight them as silver piping, which means I have about a dozen legs lying around that I can't use the same way without a whole lot of irritating work, or changing the color scheme and infuriating my obsessive painting standard for uniformity.

I don't have any Grey Knights, so I don't know exactly how the pair of legs in question looks like, but if it is that extreme you could try to cut off the piping of the Exoskeleton or whatever it is off completely and get the leg underneath smooth. Then go back in with a bit of plastic rod in the appropriate diameter and rebuild it. Might be easier than trying to carve the pipe out of a solid piece of plastic. Then you'd just have to smooth the the parts with where the rod intersects with a bit of putty.

I don't know why they would shave their legs, TDA doesn't have zip in leg armor does it? msn-wink.gif

The Dark Angels do.

I know it's not clever, I just like randomly jabbing at the Dark Angels.

We are used to it out of you... 'Sokay.... it isnt very far from "bath towels" to "dresses"

the DW command/Knights box is pretty bad with unshaved legs...
