which special and which razorback (long fang content

Hi guys,

I'm currently setting up my Long Fangs. They'll be running 4xMLs but not sure how to best support them. Im thinking of giving the Ancient a flamer or a melta as a plasma gun is too unreliable (me + plasma = 1s). As for the razorback, should I go TLLC to add to the firepower? TLHB to deal with infantry that get too close or a LCTLPG to give the best of both worlds?

My set up for the long fangs is fixed - ive had a lot of success with it! Just curious how you'd equip a razorback and thw ancient to support them.

Cheers!

If you run them without a RB i would make the Ancient a TDA and give him a SS (Like Discussed in another Threat). Its 25 points it can be worth it.

If u go with the RB either go TlLC or LC-TlPlas.

What do u choose is heavely influenced by the rest of your army. Dont give them a Target if u have no other Vehicle in your Army or use the RB to have Saturration

If you insist on a RB, get TLAssault Cannon. TLLC only gets one shot per turn, not enough. LasPlas has to be stationary to fire for full effect. Only BA do LasPlas well since their RB are fast.

RB are too expensive given their fragility in my eyes.

You want melta for av14 hunting. Lascannons suffer to high cost and cover, something melta due to it's close range and assault profile can get around.

That. LC are horribly ineffective when hunting AV14. You might get a lucky hit but most of the time they will do nothing. A melta usually costs 1/2 of a LC and can deal with AV14 almost reliably. For getting close you have drop pods or melta speeders.

Dreadnought melee is also an option. Anything S10 will do.

All valid pts but the OP is asking about his LF set up. LF's with ML should be in the rear areas giving support fire. I normally don't give the Ancient anything in this set up as those are pts better spent elsewhere IMO. Perhaps towards another LF w/ML or other HW seeing as we are allowed 5. If I were to give him anything, I would give him a flamer to help out against DS or other units hunting the LF's. As for the RB, that comes down to how you intend to use it. Are you going to drop your LF's in their spot on the board & then roll forward to support the rest of your army or are you going to have it hang back to firing & giving your LF's a taxi if they have to move? If the first, then Immersturm suggestion is my preference. If the latter, then TLL IMO(I love the LCTLPG's but almost always miss w/ the LC-meed the reroll-LOL!!!). My 2 cents. Good Luck.

For me I have 3 load outs that I really have enjoyed for long fangs. The first is all missiles like you were thinking of running. I have started to use Immersturms I dea of a tda shield to tank more damage and I stick these guys in cover for fire support.

My second favorite is the 5x heavy bolter set up which I use like with an assault cannon rb. As their roles compliment eachother and getting them to the hoard you want to mow down is important.

And last I like lascannon long fangs hanging in the back like the first long fangs. They help clear and big guys like Dreadnaughts or knights that wander into my back field area or any medium tanks that wader into line of sight.

For the stationary units I often grab a razorback dedicated with a tllc if i have tge points they are not to bad for their points and always get stuff done for me, I just don't toss the squad in the rb

Another option for stationary units is sticking a wolf priest with them....or if using multiple backfield units, ulrik is a great force multiplier. Although if you are going down the missle launcher route..keeping them cheap and cheerful may be the best option (TDA leader seems a good idea to tank wounds)

On the 'which razorback' question....after playing a heavy LC/PG RB list the last couple of games, im not sure the LC ones are worth the points - albeit i was playing someone with minimal armour - bar a landraider with a power field generator in it that just refused to die (i had 6 Lascannon shots a turn, and it still took 5 turns to kill it).

I may try out AC razorbacks..i like the idea of them (even though the one time i used them, they performed poorly), and they seem to fit in with a more midfield role.

Thanks for the responses guys!

their role is as back field objective securers / dissuade the enemy-ers as well as providing the rong range anti-whatever for my army. 15 bloodclaws on a stormwolf with ulrik is one unit, and 2 squads of GHs (1 plasma and the other melta) in pods . the plasma dudes have a wolf priest and the meltas a WGPL. There is a rune priest with the long fangs for prescience also.

As I say, the unit are campers but thwy are vulnerable to deep strikers etc so I want them to have enough teeth in the unit to put off any would be attackers. I know they have 4x MLs but I dont want to use them - they already have a job to do!

The LCTLPG variant is good...extra anti-armour and a plasma for heavy troops. TLLC gives me an extra (re-roll) heavy weapon attack...maybe drop a melta on the ancient and a combi-flamer on the rune priest? decisions decisions!!!

I will necro up this post a bit.

Is a Bastion a valid option for ML Long Fangs? Cost as much as an RB with assault cannon/las/Lasplas. The Ancient can man the HB (SplitFire) and 4 LF can fire from the 2 middle fire points for better LoS. If the LoS is still bad they can go on top.

So a 5 man group of LF are secure and can provide good 48" range support.  Additionally the 2 other HB have the chance to shoot targets for free if the enemy runs in their arc.

If I am taking a RB I will tool it to fit my LF pack. As mentioned, HB Fangs get a AC mounted RB. I can throw a lot of dakka with that pack. If I am camping back field, then I take either all ML, or I take a single LC for the split fire. They get a RB with TLLC only so that the proximity of the tank and the range of the mounted weapon is similar enough that they can hunt the same units.

Can you take a TDA Ancient and still give the pack a RB?? Obviously they cannot deploy in the vehicle. It's the same as a dedicated transport Drop Pod coming down empty, right??

End of Line

Both interesting suggestions.

I am not bothering with terrain as yet as I want to get my wolves complete (well as complete as any project ever is) before I start on a gamin table...having said that, where I will be playing my next game will have lots of bastions :D

TDA ancient is interesting, just such a shame he can't have a CML any more
