Roma
Looking at the new codex for the first time after I heard a hint that this combo is possible. Can't see anything against it in the unit entry, can anyone confirm? I love the combo of jump pack and bolter on death company, so if this is true definitely going to transform into a wolfman! DanPesci
Cant remember what the exact option is off the top of my head.....but for me...wolf guard with jump packs should be assault based...but firing the bolter stops you getting into assault, and you lose an extra attack in combat if the bolter replaces the BP or CCW. For straight up bolter squads, grey hunters in a drop pod will do the job just as well for cheaper. Also, i think wolf guard on bikes although more expensive, exceed wolf guard on JP due to the extra toughness, built int TL-bolter (which you can fire and still assault), and the jink option. The best jump pack option ive found in the new dex is running 7-8 skyclaws with 2 flamers. By no means a game-winning unit, but good for harrasment/thinning hordes/supporting an existing combat Is there a reason death company work well with bolters? Leif Bearclaw
Yes you can, but why would you? Death Company can get away with it because they also have relentless, FnP and Furious Charge (and Rending? Not sure, been a while since I read the BA book). WG have none of these, they don't even get Sternguard special ammo for their bolters. So you're left with a unit that, while mobile thanks to the Jump Packs, has no bite. The unit either shoots, doing very little damage with just bolters before standing around in front of the enemy and getting shot/assaulted, or they assault, in which case there was no point giving them bolters as you've just given up an attack in combat be sacrificing your ccw (assuming you keep the pistol here). Roma
Awesome thanks all. As to why I want to do it its because that means my dark vengeance marines with bits of cut drinking straws on their back packs now cost 20+ points each. PROFIT! Death company are awesome for that because of relentless (imo bolters on DC is the most effective option) but they are not scoring and need astorath the grim to make an army of them (who costs 220p and sucks in every single regard). So in terms of bang for buck, I think wolf guard pull this off BETTER than dc at the moment. Believe me I have been through every codex and supplement trying to make reasonable lists on the cheap I know this. Lucien Eilam
If you're going to do it, I'd consider giving them storm bolters for 5 points. Covers the Relentless, and they're still much cheaper than Death Company. Roma
Totally missed that option thanks. I happen to have a sprue of grey knight arms which makes adding sb easier, but I need to check if it replaces the bolter as the DV models are push-fit so I can't take of the bolters. Edit: nah they replace the bolter. Ah well. Lucien Eilam
Boltguns and storm bolters both replace either the bolt pistol or the chainsword, so you can have both on the same model. Not that it really matters. A model with a storm bolter never has any reason to fire a boltgun. Roma
Yet more good advice lucien thanks! Bye bye bolt pistols, bolters+storm bolters is the new meta. Disclaimer for sane army builders: 5 points for an extra shot is not worth it! Lucien Eilam
5 points for an extra shot and the option to charge afterwards… probably still isn't worth it actually, but it's closer, and what you're actually paying for. Roma
There I was thinking if you fire single shot you can still charge...sigh Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/298220-wolf-guard-with-jump-packs-and-bolters-allowed/#findComment-3839362 Share on other sites
FenrisWolf
IF you replaced the chainsword with the storm bolter and kept the pistol, would you get three shots at 12"? I thought I saw you can do dual bolt pistols on some models that gives 2 shooting attacks (essentially a 12" storm bolter). Leif Bearclaw
No, you wouldn't get three shots, as the Gunslinger rule (that allows regular models to fire 2 weapons in one shooting phase) is specific to pistols. As you can't give WG a second bolt pistol, the only way to get gunslinger WG is to give them plasma pistols, which gets expensive very quickly, and is therefore of dubious utility given the survivability of PA WG. FenrisWolf
Ok, I was unsure of the application of the gunslinger option. Coverfire
I would love the option for Wolf Guard to get special ammunition.
