All Is Dust

Recommended Posts

Well Dark Brethren,

You have my ear. I may have the slim chance to start up a Thousand Sons Warband(40K) and I'm looking or input on where to begin(minus getting the codex, might be waiting for the next release which we know may be in 2015 lol) as well as lending an ear to Tzeentch. So...how would you start an army of these bad boys and what fluffy war bands have you Magnus' Sons created?

Well, my Thousand Sons lists usually has one or two squads of TS, Ahriman or a couple of sorcerers, Spawns and a truckload of daemons.

An idea I have had but haven't had the time to realize yet is a TS sorcerer(unmarked) with prophet and malefic in a squad of MoT possessed, summoning his heart out! :)

A divination sorcerer on a disc with daemonheart, horns and force axe with some MoT spawns, could get nasty with 3++ save on those, hehe.

...bah, I need more spare time! :(

Good luck with your warband, Thousand Sons are amongst the coolest of warbands to have! :D

Excellent!

If I can ask, what daemons do you usually field? I've never personally used them and I was thinking of making a more human TS army(without daemons if possible), but as everything is jumbled in my head I'd love to be straightened out before I make my purchases.

The summoning list is just on the drawing board, haven't played TS in 7th yet. I used to play horrors with a herald for those sweet S6 shots in 6th ed, but it's less effective now(much so) and I would most likely run horrors for the extra warp charges to feed your sorcerer(s). Something killy without the need for psychic tests would be nice, like a herald of Khorne on a jugger with a pack of Khornedogs. Together with spawn and maybe two maulerfiends or something, they would be a nice distraction from your troops...

I like the Aspiring Sorcerer quite well. I don't think I'd ever cast anything with him nowadays though, except for "Force". He's a champ that can actually survive challenges and dish out some damage with a force weapon...that's why I prefer force axes on my aspiring sorcerers, the extra killyness and making enemy HQ think twice before engaging them in melee...

If you want to go the summoning route, a Daemon Prince is a good place to start - he doesn't suffer from doubled perils chances when casting Malefic powers.

My "Thousand Sons" army are actually a chaos cult using bound daemons and physical enhancement spells. I have taken to abusing the CAD mechanic a little - two CADs, something like this;

CAD 1 (C:CSM):

Ahriman (Telepathy or Biomancy)

Warpsmith (MoT, Aura, Scrolls)

Thousand Son squad

Thousand Son squad

CAD 2 (S:CS)

Divination Sorcerer of Tzeentch

Sometimes a Daemon Prince of Tzeentch

Thousand Son squad

Thousand Son squad

That is pretty darn potent!

It is very very slow and the DP is the only way to deal with AV. slanesh one with a whip would probably be best/.

In Russia they have no concept of "theme", eh? :D

Well, personally I think it's too many TS, and why not have everything from the CS supplement? There is no limitations on special characters in the supplements. Free fear is minor, but still nice. For the second CAD, why not some blobs of cultists or something, for variation and cheapness? And personally I would ally in daemons, as jeske says there is a lack of anti-tank and it needs to come from somewhere.  Screamers can tear up tanks pretty well, a LoC can do that too. Other than that, tanks. Tanks are good as well I guess, predators, vindicators and fiends...and rhinos for the TS... :)

When I expand the army, I will include some Daemon Engines. Sadly, I need to get IA13 for that since to match my fluff, everything has to look like it's been made by non-Astartes so Predators and Land Raiders are out of the question... although I could probably just about justify a Deimos Rhino / Immolator conversion to make a Predator.

Anti-tank is usually dealt with by the Sorcerers in melee or with Doombolt.

As for 'why not just use Crimson Slaughter?', the answer is simple: I want the Scrolls for my Warpsmith!

Can't you just use captured or bartered rhino-chassis tanks?

Thanks for pointing out the lack of anti-tank options. will keep that in mind.

As for those suggesting cultists: any idea what would look cool as a conversion project cultist wise. I'm undecided between going tzentchian or TS themed cultists...

What does one have to do with the other. the list has no anti tank in an edition that went back to mecha. Can one technicly play it? maybe, but it will lose against anything that isn't unbound elite meq armies on a lava board table.

Chaos support units are kind of a limited in number. Predators would probably be the only ones that fit in to this list being ~100pts and all, everything else won't fit.
