Grim Dog Studios
Just wondering what everyone's favorite spray primer was? I have a couple of old cans of GW black, but they are like two years old now so I'd rather not use them. I've been looking at the army painter ones and they look quite good. Looking for either a black one or a dark grey one, as I'm painting 30k wolves and that could cut out the step of base coating them. Army painters grey primer looks a little too light for the shade of grey that I'm after however. Any help would be much appreciated! Grand Master Belial
Rust-o-leum from local DIY home builder. Has a couple colors that are darker than Army Painter and it comes with a matte finish. Just have to be extra careful to avoid the fuzz though. And it is cheap. If you do go with the lighter gray, it is easier to wash it darker than base coating up. Aqui
I've used GW's sprays and I've found them to be okay However, if you're looking for more spray consistency when spraying, more paint for less money, more colours, then I suggest giving a trip to Halfords serious consideration. Halfords Black Matt Primer (£7.49 for 500ml) compared to getting Chaos Black (400ml for £9.80). the nozzle doesn't get clogged nearly as bad either I've recently used a red one for my Space Hulk models (painting as Flesh Tearers) and it went on very well...I just should have checked the label as it was a metallic paint I bought Still, the slight metallic effect looks quite good! Aqui
I've only used the Matt white and black so far. I'm considering using the grey myself. I got the heads up from another member of the board, (who uses the grey themselves), but I've forgotten who it is Hopefully, they will post Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/298415-best-spray-primer/#findComment-3843262 Share on other sites
Son of Carnelian
GW remains the best in my opinion. A bit overpriced but it has the perfect coverage and consistency. Army painter however, always comes out too thick. I would not recommend that at all. I've heard good things about the Wal-Mart brand primers, but my personal experience with them bordered on disastrous. Brother Callius
Vallejo spray primers has always worked for me, not to expensive and no problems with the nozzle what-so-ever. They also dry to a coarse finish so the other paints has something to stick to without clogging up the details. I use it primary on FW resin and have had no problems other than the standard mold release agent... nimrod451
I like using the Citadel GW Black Primer - Its more expensive, but I like it. I've tried other stuff and had bad luck. ... I'm not sure if this a product of being what I've always used or not though. I didn't like the Army Painter colored primer - it dried in this like.. weird rubbery texture that I found.. distressing.. and seemed a bit think for my liking. Again this might be due to lack of experience with it though. BFeeder
Just looked through the halfords paint and noticed they do a matte grey one, just wondering if anybody had experience with that one and could comment on how dark it is? Cheers, James It's excellent. For darkness, I'd say it's similar to the old Codex Grey, so it's a perfect undercoat for anything that isn't predominantly black. SW1
I find good old PoundShop does tins of matt car spray and the grey or black look absolutely fine. Buy a tin for £1 and give it a test spray. Forté
I use Halfords black, grey, and white. Love them. Spray a little further away than GW though. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/298415-best-spray-primer/#findComment-3845252 Share on other sites

I concur about its quality and colour comparison. I use it for everything which doesn't require a black primer (unless it's really cold out, then I use Gesso, but that doesn't help much with this thread :)). Grim Dog Studios
Cheers guys, think I'll pop down to halfords after work tomorrow and pick up some of the grey primer! Hopefully it's the shade I'm looking for and if not I can just basecoat the marines anyway :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/298415-best-spray-primer/#findComment-3845263 Share on other sites
Daemon2027
I also use Halfords grey. Similar price to GWs but a larger can. Make sure to shake it well before spraying. Jolemai
Another nod for Halford's Matt Black. When I get around to painting something that needs it, I will be purchasing their grey version. Stercus
The halfords range is good. Leaves a really matte finish without any shininess. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/298415-best-spray-primer/#findComment-3845415 Share on other sites
The_Chaplain
Does anyone have any experience with Vallejo's "Plastic Soldier" spray primers? I have been less than impressed with my experiences using Army Painter's spray primer in the past, and my LGS carries the Plastic Soldier brand. Gurth
I used to use Motipp brand car primer, which had excellent coverage and a good matt finish. Note my use of the past tense: the last couple of years it’s gone to poor coverage, a smooth semigloss finish, and worst of all, lifts off plastic models if I apply masking tape over it (when one of the functions of a primer is to adhere well to the material). I’ve since switched to Army Painter white primer and found it to be much better: good matt finish, good coverage and doesn’t lift with tape.
