New HH Night Lords Short

Aye, Crimson Sons only represent a single part of the Terran VIII Legion, effectively a single expedition.

The Legion itself had no name prior to the Night Lords. It doesn't say when the name was given, but the first time the name is used in the FW article is when it starts talking about Nostramo. Before, FW only uses the 'VIII Legion' moniker. Implication being the Legion name is Nostraman in origin, given by Curze himself, and the Legion was nameless or its name was unknown to the wider Imperium prior to that.

Yeah, I'd argue the mentality is much larger than just the Crimson Sons. Have to pick a new name Heathens. tongue.png

I'd also wager that the "different night" isn't just relating to "being Terran" but rather a different mindset than the what we would consider the typical Nostraman. For example, we know Sevatar doesn't care if one is a Nostraman or not as we have seen Terran Atramentar and Terran Kyroptera. Heck, he even brought one of the XIX to be a Kyroptera. So to me, the "different night" is for anyone who still tortures and kills and keeps in line with the VIII's mentality(much like we see of Zharost) but doesn't draw the same sadistic pleasure. Chances are, the only people who would fit into this group are the earlier Terrans, the very early Nostramans(most likely only the first generation) and then who knows how many recruits from the worlds in the Eastern Fringe they drew up from.

What's funny is, how Zharost uses his powers gives me an idea of where Forgeworld is saying the Tenebrae came from. Who's kidding? I had that idea before, Zharost just reinforces the connection.

No, he is still one of them but, how should I put it? If you were a gang of backstabbing murders who only obeyed those who had taken charge and were willing to do whatever it took to stay in charge, would you really let just some random outsider who can't even talk tell you what to do just because the First Captain who is never around told you that the mute is in charge? The Crow is still one of the Kyroptera. Sevatar sees him the same way Talos sees Variel. Brothers in spirit, if not blood. But Sevatar is also smart enough that if he put the Crow in charge of one seventh of the whole Legion of the most infamous murderers in the galaxy, the Crow would be killed by sheer numbers. The others have whole companies behind them. Like the gang wars of old, the biggest danger of going after them is that everyone dies. But a single, solitary outsider that no one cares about except the First Captain and he's off leading a different part of the Legion? Who cares what Sevatar thinks, kill the guy and take over.

Of course, that isn't how things worked out since both are now prisoners aboard the Invincible Reason.

First thing, I am not a fan of the Night Lords, second thing I am not a fan of melodrama, but this short story got a 7/10 from me. First thing first, it is a about a psyker Night Lord which is special itself, second it writes about a Terran Night Lord, awesome I say... but above all it offers some very important glimpses for any lore fan. We learn about life in the dark vaults of Terra, we learn how a Night Lord might use his psychic powers in battle or to instill fear and we also know that the outlook of a Terran Night Lord still spared some of the old Terran dignity and honor when compared to the Nostramans... a touching thing IMO.

All in all the short story was a great read and I recommend it. I stand behind my vote, 7/10. John French really knows how to write about psykers, librarians and sorcerers in general, and here he proved that he has a flair for the macabre too.
