Sanity check my army list

I've been staring at my list for too long, would appreciate it if someone could help me sanity check it.

1250 points - Maelstrom.

This weekend I may be going up against any of the following lists (one at a time):

  • Orks - Big Meks or Wagon + lots of Boyz
  • Space Wolves - Drop Pod Assault + Thunderwolves
  • Space Marines - 1 Imperial Knight + Tacticals in Rhinos
  • Daemons - Soul Grinder + Tzeentch / Horror Daemon Factory
  • Dark Eldar - Kabalite Raiders + Ravagers

Right now I have:

  • Company Command + Lascannon + Camo (going to be static in cover)
  • 2 x 10 Veterans + 2 Autocannons + Camo (going to be static in cover - giving it Ignores Cover Orders)
  • Platoon Command + 4 Flamers (going in the Valk)
  • 30 Infantry + Priest (blob)
  • 2 Wyvens
  • 2 Basilisk
  • 1 Vanquisher + Lascannon
  • 1 Valkyrie + MRP
  • 1 Chimera

Do you think I need more Chimeras to be more mobile for Maelstrom? Am I missing some other crucial unit?

Thanks for the opinions.

I think some mobility would help, a single Chimera won't get far. Seems a waste to have Vets camping behind cover when you have a Platoon too? You're up against a potential variety of foes though so I don't think there's a "catch all" list for them all.

I've been playing some Maelstrom games recently and experimented with various forms of mobility; scout sentinels for outflank and deep striking scions. In the end I've gone with chimeras; at the 1k point level I've been playing at, their combination of mobility and fire power is really useful.

2 Basilisks is may be overkill at 1250 points? Could drop one for a couple of extra chimeras.

I'd also be prepared to run the blob as individual squads so you can cover more objectives at the same time. Flooding the board with multiple units (especially at low points) is like being mobile; you are in multiple places at once if that makes sense. It also helps to score the objective where you get d3 VP for holding 2 to 1 objectives over your opponent.

This is the sort of game where something like a sniper special weapon squad or a min squad of ratlings could be useful; just as a dirt cheap objective holder!

The lack of mobility is problematic in general, but it's a nightmare for that company command squad.  About the only thing that might have the tiniest bit of trouble eating their lunch is the rhino rush.  It doesn't look to me like you have a use for the vanquisher in that list, and at the same time, it looks like you don't have a way to handle the imperial knight...I would drop the vanquisher for two more chimeras and give the CCS four meltaguns, meltabombs, and a chimera.  That's about your best option for dealing with the knight and the soulgrinder...the meltabombs are really useless, except as a surprise if the target survives and charges.

Ok, I've changed my list slightly - this should work better. I traded the Platoon for more Chimeras. I traded 1 Basilisk for Inquisition:

  • Company Command + Lascannon + Camo
  • 2 x 10 Veterans + 2 Autocannons + Camo
  • 3 Chimera

  • 2 Wyvens
  • 1 Basilisk
  • 1 Vanquisher + Lascannon

  • 1 Valkyrie + MRP
  • 1 Inquisitor + PsyOc
  • Inq Retinue Suicide Squad : 3 Crusaders, 3 Melta Acolytes, 4 Acolytes w/Melta Bomb (will ride in Valk)

Vanq and Basilisk are there for anti-armor (Meks, Wagon / Knight, etc.)

But also added an Inq Retinue to drop out of the Valk for the same. Crusaders are there to keep it alive to possibly use Melta Bomb.

More opinions welcome.

"Should" is a strong term, it's your army list :P I think it all depends on what you face, I'm assuming they're meant to be a tarpit style unit that deals with the nasties? Maybe some death cults so they can also turn their hand to chopping up other targets? There's a risk that in trying to account for everything you end up accounting for nothing so sometimes it's better to accept a weakness. All depends on what happens on the day, assuming the dice don't decide something else of course :P

More revision - guess I'll go with:

  • Anti-Light Vehicle:
    • Company Command + Astropath + Lascannon + Camo
    • 2 x Veterans + Autocannon + Camo
  • Objective Scoring:
    • 3 x Chimera
  • Anti-Blob:
    • 2 x Wyvens
    • Veteran + 3 Flamer + Demo (anti-armor in a pinch)
  • Anti-Armor:
    • Vanquisher + Lascannon
    • Basilisk (anti-blob too)
    • Valkyrie + MRP (anti-blob too)
    • Company Command + 4 x Melta (dropping out of the Valk)

How about something like this?

+++ 1250 (1247pts) +++

+

+ No Force Org Slot + (25pts)

* Ministorum Priest

+ HQ + (82pts)

* Company Command Squad

w/Camo, Bolter , Carapace Armour

w/4x Veterans w/ Sniper Rifles

Why sniper rifles? 36" range, they cost 2pts each, will wound everything with a toughness on a 4+, precision shots, rending, whats not to like in an all comers list?

+ Troops + (580pts)

* Infantry Platoon

* Infantry Squad

* Autocannon Team

* Infantry Squad

* Autocannon Team

* Infantry Squad

* Autocannon Team

Blobbed or individual squads, these guys can bubble rap your tanks and add some long ranged fire and benefit from ccs orders.

* Platoon Command Squad

* Chimera

w/3x Flamer

These guys can go for objectives or give orders to your vets or hang back on foot to give orders to your platoon as a backup to your ccs.

Veterans

* Chimera

w/2x Meltagun

Veterans

* Chimera

w/2x Meltagun

+ Heavy Support + (560pts)

2x Basilisks

As good as Wyverns are, Basilisks are still better at killing most things and when things get close, direct fire them like S9 battle cannons.

Exterminator

2x Multi-meltas, Lascannon

Long range and high volume of fire. The multi meltas are great for drop dreds and the knight titan when it gets close.

Eradicator

2x Multi-meltas, Lascannon

Ignore cover goodness. Multi meltas same as above.

This list gives you 9 super scoring units with lots of mobility and the ability to handle many different opponents.

Nitpicking but I can't get the same points for ccs... still stays under 1250 as a whole so no worries.
Cypher's list looks nice and has bit of everything so it should work unless you come across flier spam which luckily is not on the list of potential opponents.
