AM/IG allied with Cypher... Bad idea?

Hello all,

Its been awhile since I posted and my 40k hobby has been in a bit of a stasis for the past while, but have recently started dusting everything off and was thinking of finishing up my renegade IG army that I started a couple years back. The original concept was to have a Fallen Dark Angel (who counted as Straken) lead the army, but wih the release of the Cypher dataslate recently I have been thinking of doing the Fallen Angels formation (Cypher plus 1-3 infiltrating chosen CSM) and allying that with the now AM.

The models I have at this point:

1 infantry platoon, 3 squads, 1 P COmmand squad, and 1 mortar hvy weons team

1 vet squad made from chaos cultist conversions

1 company command squad

1 vendetta

2 Leman Russ BT

1 hellhound

1 squad of wyrdvane psykers in Chimera

2 other chimeras

1 Basilisk

1 Imperial Bombard- may not include it

And a couple other randoms things...

How should I organize this force?

Is the Cypher thing a remotely competitive option? (Domt need to be uber killy, but do enjoy winning from time to time...)

What do people think?

I will post some pics before too long

Thanks for reading and I look forward to peoples' thoughts and input!

I don't really see what Cypher adds for you.

With what you've listed, you have a pretty good start for a gunline guard army.  Add in 3 autocannon teams and a priest: you have a 30 man/3 auto blob.  Thats pretty standard, solid gunline.  Plop in the PCS with mortar for orders and CCS kitted out with 4 meltas and a chimera. For your second troops, you can grab veterans with forward sentries and try to find another autocannon for them.  Add the leman russes and basilisk for infantry and vendetta for AA/AT.

If you really want to add cypher, then a hammer/anvil is your best bet IMO.  The 30 man blob holds your backfield. 2-3 forward sentry vet squads, and a handful of sentinels come in on the opponents side and cause havoc. In this setup i'd kit the chosen for anti-tank (read meltas) because they can afford to get in closer. Leman russes move forwar to plug the gap between your two forces.  Actually... This doesnt sound so bad.

One thought:

Cypher imposes a -1 Ld penalty on your Warlord, no? Not good for IG if you want your CCS giving orders.

How about making one of your Russes a Tank Commander (and the other Russ his wingman)? Tank Commanders give orders on a 2D6 roll of 9 or less. It's not stated as a Ld roll ;)

A bit cheeky, but worth noting.

Hello!

Thanks for the input that is some helpful and interesting insights... Particularly the tank commander warlord loophole! I had been thinking of running a tank commander because I find them interesting anyways but now that you reminded me of the weird Cypher minus 1 leadership thing, it seems almost necessary to exploit that.

Honestly I know Cypher isn't a hugely game breaking character, but his fluff has always been something I have really liked and the original army premise that used Straken as a fallen angel was also based on the idea of running the power armoured guys as true-scale marines. So partly it's a hobby project but I do want it to be reasonably competitive and also be fluffy and look good on the field. Doing a squad or two of true-scale fallen sounds like a great hobby challenge and allying them with guard to give the heavy support, along with quite a bit of meat to absorb some fire and the combination of the guard models with the true scale marines will highlight the bulk and size of the marines.

So what I have been thinking based on y'alls input and some other research is something like this:

Cypher's fallen formation: cypher +1 6-man squad chosen (something like: power weapons x3, power claw, icon of vengance, plasma gun)

Allied with:

Tank commander warlord (if I bite the bullet and buy a punisher I might make it pasque in a punisher. Cheesy but awesome!)

With another LRuss (battletank or demolisher)

Company command squad (geared for close combat... Why? Honestly, I am not sure...)

Hvy flamer

Vox

Medic

Nork deddog?

Chimera

3x priests to throw into the mix!

Elites ------------------------------------>

Wyrdvane Psykers

(I know they are not great I just have the models from last edition and I think they may be useful in some context)

Troops-------------->

Platoon:

PCS

Vox

2xsnipers

3x squad

Flamer

Autocannon team

Vox

Hvy wpn team

Mortars

Vet squad in Chimera

2x melta

Melta bombs and demo-charge

hvy support --------------->

Basilisk

Fast attack ----------------->

Hellhound

Hvy flamer

Vendetta

Who rides in what exactly can change and honestly I am not totally sure what points level this is, but somewhere between 1700-2000 I think, I have really added up the specfics I am just trying to brainstorm and I will crunch some numbers and post some pics soon.

Any further feedback would be awesome and appriciated! Thanks!

I don't think you need Nork, help keep costs down as the CCS will want to be giving orders to your Platoon for the most part. The list looks capable, and it feels like the sort of force a fallen group would build up :) For Pask he's well worth it, out of the two support tanks I'd probably pick the Demolisher so it can do some heavy lifting for you.
