Sam88
Hey guys, This is my first post in the Age of Darkness boards, I've just picked up the MkIII Strike Force to get me started down this path, and I'm going with the XIV as my chosen Legion. Gives me a great chance to get some practice in on some weathering and things like that, and how do you turn down the chance to use a bunch of futuristic soldiers with giant scythes as their chosen weapons. Anyway, without any more rambling, this is the 3k list I'm looking to build. As I said, I've only bought that strike force, so if there's things here I REALLY shouldn't get/things I really SHOULD get, please let me know so I don't waste money on them. HQ: 480pts Typhon(side note, I'm assuming as he's not technically a Praetor he doesn't get to choose a Rite of War, correct?) 4 Deathshroud Bodyguard Master of Signal w/ power sword, refractor field Troops: 1020pts 20 man Legion Tactical squad w/ Apothecary with power sword, sergeant w/ power axe, Vexilla 20 man Legion Tactical squad w/ Apothecary with power sword, sergeant w/ power sword, Vexilla Legion Tactical support squad, 5 men with plasma guns Legion Tactical Support squad, 10 men with flamers, Legion rhino transport Elites 370pts Contemptor Dreadnought with Heavy Flamer, Autocannon, DCW Contemptor-Mortis Dreadnought with 2x Kheres Assault Cannons Fast Attack 230pts Storm Eagle w/ hellstrike missiles (If I can use the Reaping Rite of War, this will become a Fire Raptor when the Heavy Support squad move to troops, otherwise this may get replaced altogether, but I've kept the points the same just in case). Heavy Support 750pts Legion Heavy Support Squad w/ 10 Lascannons, Apothecary Sicaran Battle Tank w/ Armoured Ceramite Whirlwind Scorpius Now this all leaves me at 2850, in case I need to throw Rad Grenades around if I can use the reaping, or other upgrades I have totally missed while drooling over these books. Or a whole other small unit/vehicle. Army is basically a move forward to the halfway mark and just sit there and hold the enemy there. Most of the time I will be facing 40k armies as well, so take that into account when giving any ideas/corrections. Thanks a lot for your time every one, it's great to be getting into the best time period of our hobby! Slips
•Typhon has Master of the Legion and is Technically the 1st Captain of the Death Guard. That automatically makes him a Preator and because of Master of the Legion rule, can take a RoW. •Pretty much all Legion Characters barring a few have Master of the Legion, including Primarchs. •Honestly, I'd remove the Heavy Support Squad and get a Spartan instead and Stuff Typhon and his Bodyguard into it. Doing that you only lose 6 Lascannon shots but make up for it with a nigh indestructible transport that WILL outlive 10 marines + Apothecary. If you drop them, drop the Master of Signal too. Use the points to get more Deathshroud Terminators especially if you go with the Spartan route. •Imo, 5 Man Support Squads are not worth it. So, with points saved bump them up higher and give them a transport. Especially since they're so pricey. •Unless you were planning to use the Storm Eagle as a Transport, I'd take a Fire Raptor over it every time. Upgrade the FR to have Reaper Auto-Cannon Batteries and other goodies and it has more Dakka than a Dakka Jet. •I'd turn your Non-Mortis into a Mortis, personally, for more Anti-Air insurance ESPECIALLY since you're playing at 3k points. Though if you don't, I'd run it with 2 DCCW with Heavy Flamers and use it as a support unit to the Deathshroud Terminators + Typhon, its even more hilarious if you take the RoW for Chem-Munitions. •Apothecaries take up an Elites Slot, btw, but can have more than 1 per slot and are attached to squads independently from there on. Consider giving them Augury Scanners. •If you take rad grenades you WILL want to throw them. -1T makes a whole lotta difference in 30k especially with characters having rather easy access to T5 (Preator/Consul on jetbike with a Refractor Field makes them a very fast TEQ unit with T5, 2+ armor, jink, etc.) •Consider a Sicarian Venator as an addition to the list. At 3k, Super Heavy Tank/Vehicles will probably be common. The Venators gun will make those units cry. ...thats all I've got. Off to bed :p Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/299002-death-guard-3000pts/#findComment-3856752 Share on other sites
Sam88
Hey Slipsteams, thanks a lot for the pointers! They sound like solid ideas. As such, here is my revised list... HQ: 810pts Typhon, The Reaping 7 Deathshroud Bodyguard Land Raider Spartan with flare shield Troops: 1145pts 20 man Legion Tactical squad w/ Apothecary with power sword, sergeant w/ power axe and rad grenades, Vexilla 20 man Legion Tactical squad w/ Apothecary with power sword, sergeant w/ power sword and rad grenades, Vexilla Legion Tactical support squad, 10 men with plasma guns, Legion Rhino Legion Tactical Support squad, 10 men with flamers, rad grenades, Legion rhino transport Elites 480pts Contemptor Dreadnought with Heavy Flamer, Autocannon, DCW Contemptor-Mortis Dreadnought with 2x Kheres Assault Cannons 2x apoths with swords, in the 2 tac squads Heavy Support 500pts Sicaran Battle Tank w/ Armoured Ceramite Whirlwind Scorpius Fire Raptor w/ hellstrike missiles, autocannon sponsons 2880 So I've basically now added rad grenades to the troop slots, and beefed up the HQ unit. 120 points shy of 3k, but I can't help but feel my anti-tank is a bit light on, specially for this size game. I know you said I could add the venator, but not really sure where I would find the points short of dropping a dread or something. Possibly a Pred with lascannon sponsons? Edit put the fire raptor in the right spot Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/299002-death-guard-3000pts/#findComment-3857431 Share on other sites
Slips
To be quite frank, while the Horus Heresy lets you do literally whatever you want with a given Legion. So feel free to disregard anything I say/type. I just feel like the Storm Eagle doesn't fit in with the rest of the list. If you took it out, that'd give you 350 points to play with. That said, since your 20 man Tac blobs will be Footslogging it, Apothecaries would really help with their Durability. Their not mandatory but will help. Give them augury scanners and your opponent will think twice about deepstriking within 18" of either squad which gives you a potentially 18" long 36" wide or 18" wide 36" long bubble of 'Deepstrike here if you dare'. If you just take Augury Scanners, 2 of them cost 100 so, that leaves you with 250 points to play with. You could take another Contemptor-Mortis with Lascannons or Autocannons but for heavier armor a Sicarian Venator would be a safe bet too. Another option would be Graviton Cannon Rapier Batteries. Since they cause Haywire, they have the potential to strip HP quite well though they can't shoot air. This is by far the cheapest solution though it is the most immobile and probably the most vulnerable. If you want it to shoot air too, consider Lasdestroyers. Third option is the Fire Raptor. Taking it stock leaves you with 50 points to play with and the amount of fire power it brings is scary. It can shoot at 4 individual targets if needed and be used as an Anti-Air unit. Though it also has the problem of the Storm Eagle, that being its your only flyer so will be focused by every anti-air solution your opponent has. It also takes a Heavy Support slot. With the points left over, taking Reaper Autocannons for the Raptor, Armored Ceramite for the Spartan (this is a must. Being Melta immune is VERY good) and Armored Ceramite for the Fire Raptor (not as necessary) should give you a list that is flush 3000 points if my math is right. Though what that means is they aren't firing at anything else in your list so, hey. Silver Lining and all. Slips
hahaha No worries then! So, Id say Apothecaries with Augury Scanners that leaves enough points for Armored Ceramite on the Spartan. There ya go. Flush 3k points. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/299002-death-guard-3000pts/#findComment-3857450 Share on other sites

Slips
My earlier suggestions was with keeping the dual dccw with heavy flamers. That said this list looks just as good. You could sprinkle some upgrades around or add to the deathshroud terminators if you can. Or up the autocannon dread to lascannons if you dont switch him back. Having dual kheres makes for great anti infantry too but two of them is rather overkill imo. At this point any extra upgrades are mostly to round out the units youve got so do what feels right.
