New(ish) player looking for some advice

Hi everyone,

This is going to to be the first time I’ve actually posted on here although i have been reading up for a while now.

I've recently come back into the game from an extremely long break...we are talking rogue trader era here....and I’ve decided to return and join the ranks of the imperial guard.

I've played a few games and done fairly well...the last game i had was a 1500 point game against an imperial knight army which i actually managed to win while suffering an estimated 97% casualties (command would be so proud of me).

From there I've been invited to join a league which will be far more points than I’ve done before (2545 to be exact). From what I've been told they are moving from 6th edition to 7th. With this they are very excited about taking lords of war outside Apocalypse and with the higher points it is fairly obvious everyone is going to be packing them.

With that being said i have roughly fleshed out an army which i would like to have some advice on.

HQ

CCS - officer of the fleet, company standard, master of ordinance.

Tank commander - Pask, punisher, las cannon, multimelta sponsons

Exterminator, heavy bolter

Troops

Vet, 2 melta guns, chimera, camo netting

Infantry Platoon

PCS, auto cannon

Squad, auto cannon

Elite

10 Ratlings

Heavy

Wyvern Battery

Wyvern

Wyvern

Leman Russ squad

Battle tank

Leman Russ squad

Vanquisher, las cannon

Fast Attack

Vendetta

Armoured Sentinel, plasma cannon, camo netting

Lord of War

Baneblade, las cannon sponsons

Fortification

Aegis defence line, quad-gun

So the general plan would be to form up a gunline while the vets and the sentinel go hunting with some vendetta and punisher support....obviously the exact tactics depends on the opponent and the mission.

Thanks for the advice in advance. :-)

Welcome to the B&C, you'll find yourself in good company as we must have a squad's worth of hoary veterans by now :P Looks like you're jumping in with both feet but what better way to get back into the game? Much has changes as you're no doubt aware! Your list has a good feel to it as a core, but at 2500pts the game changes in how it plays so you'll need to keep that in mind as you build up your army. Along with the transition to 7th and the accompanying eagerness I think it's safe to say that this will lead to the big models coming out so planning accordingly would be wise.

There some changes I would consider for your list, namely dropping of the camo netting on cheaper and mobile elements. At larger points it's best to play to our strength which is numbers and the associated number of guns! The Vanquisher is best with some form of enhancement to hit, as are Sentinels better in number (two or more works nicely). The Baneblade will be a good defensive pin for your infantry to form around but what out for nasties like fast moving/deep striking elements or something like a Knight that will maybe a line for it.

How many models do you have, and do they have a colour scheme?

Hi Warriorfish, thanks for the welcome and thanks for the advice so far.

So far I've got all of the models in that list plus about 110ish infantry which I was going to turn into Kriegers and 80 that were going to become scions. I'm feeling like investing in more tanks would be worth while :-D

As for a colour scheme I've gone for a really exciting olive green and grey....its not the most exciting colour scheme in the world but I like it :-) The krieg i was going to go for brown and grey and the scions blue armour with khaki fatigues.

Ok, heres a photo of one of my PCS. I used Mutant Chronicles from Prince August, partly cause they were real cheap and partly i liked the simple regimented design of the models. I thought it captured the millions of faceless infantry the guard has quite nicely. Also i really am not a good painter and cant really do the newer detailed models justice (unlike some of the insanely good painters here).

Your skills and techniques are above normal mate. And if your afraid of more details and thinking it will make it harder to paint... your actually wrong :)

With your techniques it actually becomes easier. Less open spaces means that your shades/washes doesn't pool as easy. The details basically paint them self with shades/washes. Don't even need to be precise. Given, it takes a bit longer to paint as you have to paint the details with different colours sometimes.

And to be honest, I think these models have more details than some GW models I have seen.

Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the compliments. I've ordered a krieg command squad so I'll be able to test out some washes on some more detailed models.

Oh forge world models, if cleaned properly, are excellent for shades/washes. With your current colour scheme it will work really well too.

I must ask, are you using army painter shades? Or is it a very smooth normal wash?

With all the chat of armies and painting it's made me finish my favorite unit of the whole army.

The one unit responsible for making a friend of mine weep when they killed his Bloodthirster.
