I read it, and enjoyed it. Obviously there was going to be someone in disguise, but I enjoyed how it played out. And the cyptic hints for events to come - why did Magnus ask Alpharius to spare that person? Mysterious!

Also, I love that the Alpha Legion's battlecry is "For the Emperor!"

I quite want to make a model of the chap at the very end...

I started it on the train home and finished it a bit later this evening - it's brilliant, really well done! Thoroughly enjoyed it - McNeill at his best. Feels odd reading some of the comments back from this thread admittedly...

And yet again, us Alpha Legion fans has to walk away from a book with no surviving named Alpha Legionnaires (well, except Alpharius)... sad.png

Can I be honest (hopefully without offending)? Would names truly matter? Of any Legion, the XX uses such relics of culture as a new source of confusion. I am more shocked we have any names for the Alpha's at all.

A name is a two-edged sword. The Alpha Legion have simply made it their own.

I would not be surprised if they used electoos that could be altered. Have a hydra on Monday, a chain on Tuesday, etc.

In fact, I swear that this was in a short story at some point.

Yep. Tallarn: Executioner.

The names they carry isn't the important part, that was not my point...

The Alpha Legion doesn't have continuity the same way many of the other legions have with returning characters. Each new story features new characters, and at the end they invariably perish. I'm afraid of when they decide to kill off the last two from Legion, Mathias Herzog and Ingo Pech, because that's where they'll all end up if they get mentioned in a book as it seems now...

Naming implies ownership over something - the fact that they are all Alpharius, one and the same, takes away that power of knowing the enemy.

I don't see it as a problem at all - I can appreciate being a bigger fan and wanting to base things on them, but I quite like that mystery. We've got another seventeen known legions to have heroes for anyway!

That's towards outsiders. Inside the legion there is only one Alpharius...

But I like being on the outside: being on the inside of the sneakiest group ever is like having your cake and eating it!

And being stabbed/blown up/shot after eating said cake because alpharius demands it!

I agree it would be nice for some characters to recur other than the twins. Until he got himself perished spectacularly i believed Ingo Pech had some staying power. The alphas cant really have any official decent ranking characters left if they all have to lay down their lives in such a fashion
