New to grey knights

Recommended Posts

Hey guys

I'm soon to be starting a new Grey knight army, despite the amount of negativity surrounding this dex, I love the models and I think the idea of a unique, elite marine force just oozes awesome to me!

I'm going to be picking up a rulebook this Saturday. It was a tough one because I was stuck between BA and the knights. But I prefer the knights for aesthetical reasons :)

I was just wondering what the GK knights are like to play? I really.. REALLY. Want to fit a librarian and Draigo in my list. Is it possible?? How good is draigo in this edition?

I also really like the idea of the purifier squads and the purgation squads. Are they still viable? How do other armies fair against GK in the psychic phase?

Thank you for any help :)

Librarians are our best HQs, and since Draigo is now a Lord of War, you need an HQ to be able to bring him. Therefore they work great together.

Purifiers are still great; purgation squads are a joke though, sadly.

Also, the BA will probably get a new codex in a month or so, so it was probably a good thing that you didn't go for them right this moment smile.png

Edit: Spelling

It wasn't just the fact that they're getting a new book. Just the fact I'm less a fan of assault type armies, and the theme of GK is something that I prefer :)

Could I take crowe for a purifier army?

I'm in need of building a 1500 point army. Could I get draigo and a librarian in 1500 points? If I do, I would assume it would be best to avoid termies to get more boots on the ground?

How good is draigo this edition? ?

Thanks for the reply :)

Welcome to Titan Young Brother Knight

it is understandable about your liking of the Blood Angels as well as our selves as both forces have amazingly detailed models

but like you I joined the brotherhood  for the models ( Good Choice I say )

so lets tick off the questions you are asking

1) the Grey Knights will always be out numbered so it is always best to try and get the first punch in to reduce the return fire, over the years of play they have only grown in strength as an army , you will find power armoured marine players will cower in your ap3 presance , but eldar, DE , Tau and Guard will have a lot of tricks to take you out at range before you get close,  you will find that Gate of infinty and teleport shunting Dreadknights and Interceptors are  definatly the most usefull things in our army at the moment.

2) yes it is possible to feild them both but it takes a large chunk out of your force possibilties, Dragio and a cheap Libby compliment each other nicely Dragio is a power house with S7 ( pos S9 with HH) 2+ 3++  and eternal warrior dependant on what your Libby has  you can uber buff Dragio or with Dragio and the Libby both casting gate of infinty you can seriously ruin your opponents day but knote you are paying 355 pts for that

3)Purifyer Squads are definatly Amazing and are very usefull especially with the ability to take 4 heavy  weapons that and their Cleansing flame is brilliant , Purgation Squads are cheaper versions of Purifyers and are useful with teleport homers attached

my personal oppinion is that you are starting a good army but take your time and think carfully what you buy the modelos as eveything is usefull in one way or another

one thing i would say and my Fellow Knights of Titan would agree

if you want people to quiver in their boots buy a Dread knight

with your second set of questions

1) Crow is a very good challange monster if you go unbound you can make some very nice purifyer armies , if you stick with a bound force have say 2 small unints of stikes and then 3 units of purifyers it will still work rather nicely it will depend on who you face and how you deploy them

2) it is possible to put Draigo and a libby in a 1500 point list its it takes a 1/5th of the points of the list so you could have a 5 man termi squad and then bolter it with strikes and Dread knights,  but it would be a smaller force

3) Dragio is like most new dex Lords of War nice pointsd reduced from previous dex , not game breaking, as a model in his own right I would take him from now to the End times and back he is a combat monster , the main issues us 5th dex vets are moaning about really is the fact he dosnt buff armies to allow Paladins to be troops but that dosnt matter so much in 7th with the option to go unbound

Thank you you so much for your excellent reply! :)

It's so deterring trying to get into grey knights with so many nay sayers and the like. But In my opinion they just don't like change. I'm happy you have to take Assassins or inquisition as allies.

But as for the lists it sounds good! I'd prefer to take two dread knights, only because I believe in taking things in pairs. (Two land raiders, storm talons ect.) But I hear that's cheese.

I'll definitely take draigo. And a librarian with the daemonica I think I hear it's good!

In my opinion with you being so low on numbers it forces you to think more carefully. Like a losing chess game. Which is what I love! Plus my friend plays Nids.. (hehehe) which should be fun ;)

How does having so much stuff being anti daemon affect the army though? Are things not over costed due to this?

regarding 3rd series of question ;) :)

1)  there are diffrent varients of Cheese , I would say that 2 Dreadknights is a strong Chedder where as an unbound list of them is a 4 month off melted Bree

I personally think if you take one its a good boost to the army , if you want to take 2 be warnd that you have lost a squad of Strikes for it sor less wounds but greater fire power , remember that these will be the heavy fire power magnets that the rest of your army will need to have to survive to get in to combat

2) if you fnd the points make the libby a lvl3 as that means you will have access to most of the sanctus powers ( all of which are amazing dependant on apponents )

3) Playing a termi army is a Very Tacticle game due to low model count , target 1 enemy kill it then the next and so on it takes a while to get used to theis version of play,  I love facing Nids Psylancers would be a must if you face them just to ruin their day at range ( only shooting weapons with force in the game )  ;)

4) our things are not really over costed , if you talk to players of other armies , most think that our stuff is under pointed ( or that is what i have found around London )  our relics are very cheap comparing them to the Space wolves , and are nicer , overall I think that GW have balanced out the Dex compaired to the 5th ed dex which was way OP , but dont worry at some point GW may give us a nice shiney suppliment to play with as well

( Please bring back the Psy Ammo GW Pretty Please with a cherry on top ;) )

hope this Helps

DW

Cheers Daemon wolf :)

You're definitely helping so much! Albeit under costed, is it not wasted having so much anti daemon weaponry and abilities??

Would be nice to have a supplement. Do you ever ally your grey knights?? I kinda wanted a purr GK army.. maybe allying an assassin or inquisition but not till I've had my fix :)

hello once again my neophite

GW have made the GK Dex a fluffy dex as our main ( only ) opponent should be the filth from the  emperion , so to that end they have gieven us haterd deamons , and psykout nades and baneshment which our the main anti deamon bits ( yes im not fogetting the banners ) the Banners them selvs do other bits other than anti deamon stuff, the thing is if we ever come up against a deamon army we have lots of nice tricks against it which other armies do not have , so its nice and fluffy

put simply the main question you have asked is a hugh bone of contention within the GK community here , so the way i look at it is , 1 we have some nice anti deamon bits for effective freemans ,  2  we will never see a deamon army unless GW start the Throne of Skulls tournement again , 3 costing it out we are reasonably pointed for our bits even if we never see a deamon but if we do then they will regret it, 4 its a nice fluffy add to our dex to make us diffrent from the Angels of blue red green yellow and black.

I have only ever allied with Assassins with the new dex and it works ok  , I have found that a GK only force works well , and reading oposts on this forum i have found that GK being allied to other armys works very well as they bring stuff that we lack and vikky verky

I would in time recommend looking at the assassins and Inquisition as I have run both in the previous dex and they are nice and would make a nice fluffy detatchment to your army

:)

We're a melee army that can lay down a fair amount of ranged hurt, before we close to finish the job in close-combat. Playing us any other way (mechanising, camping as a gunline, trying to attrition without Allies) is doomed to failure. Deepstrike/Shunt into their lines Turn 1, hit them in the face as hard as you can with your guns, then hope you survive their shooting phase with enough stuff to end them in melee.

Librarians are a solid HQ choice and are the usual choice for most Knight lists.

Draigo is 100% insanely good, however being expensive and a Lord of War is a big drawback. He's best paired with Grav-Centurions or Stormhammers from Codex: Inferior Marines. Attaching to our units isn't realising his full potential. 'Gate' is amazing on a shooty unit, but its equally good for delivering melee units into enemy lines Turn 1.

Purifier squads are one of only two viable PA units we have (the other being Interceptors). They work best if delivered via Raven or camping with psycannons in a bunker. I would avoid them below 2k, as they end up being a big investment due to Raven and/or Bunker required to make them useable. On foot they're at real risk of being torn to shreds by enemy fire.

Purgators are utter garbage and should be avoided like the plague. This is not a drill.

We're brutal on armies with few or no psykers, and we're average to fair against other psychic armies. Our normal lists generate between 10-14 WC base, which is respectable but nothing compared to Daemons/CSM.

Is it possible to make a decent GK only list though? I despise the thought of allying with smurfs. I mean I'm not competitive in the slightest. I just want an army of the emperors best units :) they look awesome :) what tanks can GK have??

I wouldn't really tailor my list if I could help it. I just like taking units because I like the idea of them :) what does the cleansing flame do for the purifiers??

If I was to play a 1500 point game (without knowing point costs) I'd go with something like..

Draigo

Librarian

2 squads of termies, draigo in one, Librarian in other

A purifier squad/ interceptor

2 dread knights if poss.

I dunno about points wise but that's the list I was looking at

Cleansing Flame? Cleansing Flame kills everything.

Also you always want to have a car for Purifiers - they can't Deep Strike, and having them walk up the board is a waste. My preferred car is the flying one that isn't REALLY a car but is more of a Stormraven.

Or there's option two which is already in his list: The car that's not really a car, but a warp dust-sniffing madman with GoI ;)

I was just trying to preserve points as I don't know how much each unit costs :)

Depends what you mean.

GK's are 'decent' in a casual game. We're an army with generally strong abilities, and we have both ranged and melee ability that other armies would envy, if it were not for our abysmal model count in most lists.

GK don't field vehicles besides Ravens, so if you want tanks play AM or Marines.

Well for cheaper transport I wouldn't mind a rhino depending on how many purifiers I'm trying to get In. But aside from the lack of transport for the purifiers, how good is that list?? My normal opponent fields Tau and Tyranids :)

Land Raiders are an excellent option if played right

If you're allying in Dark Angels for Power Field Generators, or using Void Shields, (Or running FW super durable varients) sure. ;)

Otherwise, I've not worried about a LR since 4th Edition.

You can manage something like this:

Draigo

Librarian, L3

Purifiers, 2x Incinerator, 1x Hammer, 1x Halberd, Meltabombs

Terminators, 1x Psycannon, 1x Hammer, 1x Halberd, Meltabombs

Terminators, 1x Psycannon, 1x Hammer, 1x Halberd, Meltabombs

Stormraven

Dreadknight, Teleporter, Incinerator

Dreadknight, Teleporter, Incinerator

At 1500.

How many heavy weapons can purifiers have? Is it 4 for 10? I wouldn't mind combat squadding 5 of them to go for a frontal assault or even a hammer to a terminator anvil. And have the other 5 heavy weapons either being 4 Psycannons and being more stationary or 4 incinerators :) that's how I would run them. If you combat squad them do they generate two warp charges? If not do you only need to cast the one spell to effect the other combat squad?

Thanks :)
