Wolfface
Hi all For my golds I usually base rhino hide, then sycorax bronze, brown wash and highlight with silver. It gives a lovely muted aged gold, rather than a shiny ultramarine type. I'm toying with the idea of using balthasar gold as a base instead of rhinox hide but am too cheap to buy it. I'm thinking of mixing a batch in a spare bottle using my existing paints. Can somebody who uses balthasar gold or has experience with different golds tell me how I could get an approximate copy using the below paints? Rhinox hide, steel legion drab, xv 88, and the gold I will be mixing the browns with will be vallejo shining/glorious gold. I'm just wondering about ratios. I'm thinking predominantly Rhinox then add the gold then use one of the other two browns to lighten. Any ideas would be great. Lucio
Personally, I use Warplock Bronze base and a drybrush application of Golden Griffon to get the weathered gold look. For a brighter look, I tend to use Runic Armour Gold to pick out the highlights. With regards to your original question, I'd suggest mixing the bronze directly with the gold would serve as a base. Xenith
Balthasar gold s essentially what you got by mixing the old shining gold with scorched brown. A darker gold with greatly improved coverage. I'd imagine that by mixing gehenna with dryad bark (just a touch) or rhinox hide, you would get the same effect. The mix should be mainly gold. You want a gold that has opacity, not a brown with gold bits in it. Wolfface
Thanks for the replies folks. The only gold I have is vallejo gc glorious gold which is a shade darker and the equivalent to auric armour gold. Xenith could u suggest an approximate mixing ratio between rhinox hide and auric armour gold? Wolfface
I gave it a go last night. It actually looks very similar to balthasar gold. Also transferred some of citadels into vallejo type bottles. So much better wish I had done this before. I'm trying to make a red glaze like bloodletter. I tried it last night but it came out pinkish so I'll add more red but just wondering what you use to create glazes. Not a wash, a glaze is what I'm after. So I used a tiny drop of citadel base merchrite red I think and added liquitex matt medium and then water. The ratios were approx 10% red,40% matt medium, 50% water. Any tips on the ratio?
