Hi All,

The hobby butterfly that I am and ever curious of new techniques had a crack at Word Bearers this weekend. Should have been studying and/ or working on my Exodus for March of the Legions... Oh well!

Comments and Critiques needed, bear in mind not finished yet.

Looks great! Were did you find the FW scheme repice?

Thanks. Pretty sure it was in this very forum. If you do a Google search there is lots of other sites like The independent Characters etc who also list every FW scheme for the legions so far covered. I do not have some of the products used but will list the scheme here with my take on a few of the products.

Prime Chaos Black spray

Drybrush Leadbelcher (they use Rub and Buff Pewter)

Drybrush Ironbreaker (again the rub and buff is part of this process)

Wash Baal Red (they airbrush, I just use my wash brush)

Tamiya Clear Red Spray (they airbrush, I use the convenient canned form of this... and its cheaper than buying an airbrush)

Wash Baal Red again... Why?... You will see it really takes the shine off the clear red

I wont bother with the black method as it is not anything groundbreaking

Then i weather the whole thing with Charadon granite sponged sparingly here and there, followed by sponging Ironbreaker over the same areas.

I found the whole experience surprisingly easy, give it a bash.

Thanks. not entirely sure on the base at this moment in time. I would like to be able to say he is/ was at the Massacre but also taking part in the shadow crusade. He has a lot of black and grey on him already though so may try something a little more "earthy". As for his missing weapon it was a power axe, sadly i dropped him just after doing all the red and it snapped off. But this has made me wonder if I use something a little more chaotic, as I would love my terminators to benefit from dark channeling and this may make them stand out a little more. Then again I am always fighting a battle in my head as to which legion I do. Maybe I should post all my test minis in one place and get the community to vote on which legion to stick with.

I've been painting my Word Bearers using the same Forgeworld recipe. I posted these a while back, but here are the photos again.

I think some more weathering is still needed to call it finished. Haven't tried sponging yet. Do you have a link to a good description of this?

Also like the sound of the clear red spray. I will try and find some of that (not Amazon, it just has the standard stuff). Sounds much easier than brushing it on and you've got a much smoother finish than I did.

I'm currently painting up a converted Librarian and the two FW Praetor models (plus some more tacticals) in this scheme. I've tried doing the Praetors with lots of gold trim and I'm not too sure it works too well alongside the shiny red armour. I think your mostly dark detailing looks far better - more contrast. However I wanted it out before moving onto Lorgar & Erebus / Kor Phaeron. But will finish them first before making a final decision & should be ready to post some more photos in a couple of weeks.

Thanks for your comments and for posting your most excellent Word Bearer.

Sponging is really easy: first get yourself some of the foam you find in blister packs (this stuff is the best)

Then get a small blob of the required paint. I usually put this on an old ceramic plate.

Break off a small piece of the foam, about a pinch in size if not smaller.

Using tweezers to hold the foam dip it into the paint, then dab the excess paint off of the foam onto some kitchen towel until almost dry and not much paint left on it.

Then simply dab onto the mini in the required areas (I find only lightly dabbing does the trick)

You may need to repeat this process a few times as the paint dries very quickly.

Hope you find this helpful.

Also the spray is great and rather cheap, only cost me $14.00 Aussie dollars from a local hobby store. There is two types of it and you need to make sure you pick up the one suitable for plastic minis.

Perfect shade of red as to still be red, but not IX Legion red. Great job bro.

Thanks. Would'nt want it to look like Blood Angels or Thousand Sons. I have seen the Forgeworld version for the sons and it is very Blood Angel-esque in my opinion Other than the large amount of gold they used. Wonder how they will do the BA scheme to set them apart?

Thanks for the sponging advice. I'll give that a try. My idea of weathering until now (and all that's on the photos I just posted), was to just drybrush some of the paint I used on the base, onto the feet of the mini. I had just bought some Forgeworld weathering powders and was going to try to figure out how to use those. A think the two techniques complement each other though. The sponging sounds like it represents minor armour damage with the powders for dirt & dust picked up from the ground.

Hope I've got the right spray paint. I could only find one type available and I've just ordered three small 100ml tins of Tamiya TS-74 Clear Red Acrylic Spray. Couldn't find any locally, so had to use a courier, because apparently our over-priced and somewhat useless postal service won't let you send spray cans in the post. Ended up paying about £20 for the three of them.

Think I'll try it on a vehicle first, so if it gives a different finish, it won't clash too much with my troops - or perhaps bumping my three Rapiers ahead of Lorgar in the painting schedule.

Cheers.

Those 100ml tins go a long way. I used another of their colours on a dark eldar army a few years back and still have roughly a quarter left! The paint they use I find is much thinner than GW. Think you have the right one, its the polycarbonate version you need to avoid I think?

I use FW weathering powders sometimes but they can be a pain to work with as you need to use some kind of fixative. What I would recommend is:

This stuff requires no messing around. It is so easy to use and when you are finished all you need to do is spray your model with matte varnish, I used this last on a couple of World Eaters.

Starting to look like a Tamiya rep right now haha.

Oh yeah... Think I got the Word bearer bug:
