How do you normaly run your infantry platoons?

So, I was just curious. I'm starting a AM army myself and plan on running infantry platoons on foot. So I started thinking, How do people normaly run their platoons? Do you run them in chimeras? Or big blobs? How many squads do you take and how many of them do you blob? Do you give them Heavy Weapons Teams, Or save the HWTs for the Heavy Weapons Squads? What special weapons do you give them?

I run my platoon as this

3 infantry squads in a blob barebones

Commissar pb and fist

Two heavy weapons squads autocannons and lascannons respectively

I like the heavy squads separate because it allows you o take full advantage of orders and shooting at different targets

I quite like Guardsman spam, so:

PCS with 4 Flamers in a Chimera (Plus Meltabomb on the PCS for versatility if points are free.)

20 Guardsmen with 2 Flamers and a Vox

50 Conscripts with barebones Commissar.

It's a whoel lot of board presence for not a lot of points.

I usually have a PCS and at least 3 infantry squads. Grenade launchers and a flamer.

Every squad gets a Chimera. They then form together into a Voltron like wall of AV12 and take the centerish objective and supports my vets/heavy as needed.

Here's a question with lots of answers! :P I like mine cheap, so squads with flamers and grenade launchers see plenty of use. Voxes too for a nice order network. Heavy weapons are usually mounted on tanks, but when they do see infantry use it's usually in squads. Again, the cheaper weapons are preferred.

A cheap PCS with a couple of special weapons if that usually accounts itself well, and three infantry squads is always a good starting point. From there it's usually adding Veterans as for the most part a single Platoon will cover all your standard trooper needs :) I think it's best to pick an approach for your infantry and then focus on it. For example build them to blob up, or to hold the line etc. Guard aren't Marines so it's usually better not to try and do too much, a special and heavy on 10 T3 5+ models gets expensive quick unless you have a specific plan.

Thanks for all the replies! It's intresting to see how diferent people build their army diferently ^_^ Personaly I'm considering running atleast 2 platoons with a Platoon Command Squad in Chimera and 3-5 Infantry Squads with flamers blobbed together into one 30 or 50 man blob, With a commisar. And 3 Lascannon teams forming one squad, For each of the two platoons. Might get some veterans.. For veterans, I'd like to use the Tempestus Scions heads without helmet, The ones with the hats, On cadian bodies.. XD But that means I'd need a couple of units of Tempestus Scions too..

I'm the go-big-or-go-home type of guy, so I run the following:

PCS: Power weapon, meltagun, banner, medkit and vox (more for looks than use, honestly.)

3x Infantry squad: Heavy Bolter team, Grenade launcher, vox.

Heavy Weapons Squad: 3x Lascannon

Heavy Weapons Squad: 3x Missile Launcher (W/Flakk)

Heavy Weapons Squad: 3x Autocannon

Heavy Weapons Squad: 3x Mortar

In smaller games I only bring the first 2 HWS.

When I go higher however, I bring a 2nd Platoon that's designed to be more mobile.

PCS: Heavy Flamer, power weapon, medkit, banner, vox

3x Infantry Squad: Flamer, vox (possibly Chimera's, depending on pts limit.)

Long story short: Platoons are awesome! cool.png

I have two ways that I'll run my platoons.

1st the "Defensive platoon" aka bubble wrap, meat shields.

PCS

Bolter for the lieutenant and flamers or grenade launchers.

3-5 infantry squads

Autocannons and if i have the extra points, bolters on the sgts

This configuration is what i usually take when i run with my artillery company. Their job is to protect my tanks and artillery from deep strikers and secure home objectives.

2nd the "assault platoon" ( i generally prefer mech vets for this job)

PCS

4x flamers and melts bombs + bolter for LT.

2-5 infantry squads

Flamers and if i have the spare pts bolters on the sgts.( my DKoK assault brigade sgts will get power swords)

Basically the only time i use this platoon is when i play DKoK assault brigade because with "forlorn hope" objective they regenerate once they are wiped out. Other than that vets are just all around better for assaulting enemy objectives.

I run mine as:

2-3 Infantry Squads with a Heavy Weapon (Usually Lascannons) in each.

Priest (For fearless)

Psycher (For Prescience)

As well as an PCS outside of the group usually using the split fire order to allow shooting Lascannons at tanks and Lasguns at infantry.

My platoon blob is 3  squads with grenade launchers and autocannons, a priest and a psyker.

I will also (usually) take a vet squad with plasma.

The rest of the infantry is usually taken care of  by Adepta Sororitas with flamer Battle Sister squads and melta Dominion squads.

I've run them a host of ways over time and enjoyed them all:

  • Steel Legion - Minimum Squads in Chimeras with Flamers
  • AP2 Advance - Three squads with plasmaguns and a PCS that sticks behind them for orders
  • Melee Hordes - Five Meltagun, meltabomb, Power Axe squads with a Priest. Add in 50 Conscripts with Priest and PCS for orders. ADVANCE!
  • Tank Hunters - Five Squads with Lascannons, flamers, and Vox. Keep CCS nearby. Expensive but has always worked for me. Flamers toast chargers.
  • Chump Blockers - Always unblobed squads with Autocannon and Grenade Launcher. Their main role is to be speed bumps that prevent the enemy from getting good charges off.

I admittedly don't like or trust HWSs. Too expensive for too little endurance. I'll actually pay the lasgun tax in order to keep my heavy weapons alive for more than a turn. I also don't put much stock into special weapon squads but that is just because I'd sooner use veterans for the same role.
