Tiger9gamer
So I've been making army lists in battle scribe with a lot of imperial guard lists and I have been having a hard time figuring out what I would want. Blob squads look cool but they are so many models and such low stength and such I don't know if I would like it. I also like mech lists but they seem to get really expensive really fast. What should I look for? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/299415-what-should-i-look-for-in-am/ Share on other sites
CoffeeGrunt
It's mostly down to personal taste. Guard do massed Infantry, massed AV14 and massed AV12 very well. The best lists end up being a balance of these things. For example, I currently run a couple of Russes, a couple of Hellhound chassis vehicles, some Sentinels, a blob of 20 Guardsmen and 50 Conscripts, a Chimera with Melta Veterans, and another with Scions in. Oh, and a couple of Wyverns and a Manticore. You can max out Artillery, Armour or Infantry with Guard, but a list that balances out across these is better as while you're less likely to come across an army you're a hard-counter to, you're also less likely to be hard-countered in turn. Tiger9gamer
I get the mix is important but how can you fit it all in your lists? is there a good example I can get walked through? WarriorFish
As mentioned you need to decide how you want to run your list first. It sounds like you want a hybrid list, but that's a good default approach anyway :) I break it down into the basics - you need troopers of course for the mandatory FOC choices so what do I want? Infantry and Platoon heavy, or a grenadier Vet company? If I can't decide again I go with a hybrid - a single Platoon will realistically give you all the trooper needs you could want for normal games, which frees me up for a Veteran squad or two to complement them and fulfil the remaining FOC requirement. From there I then decide what support I want to give them. Do I want tanks? If so, in what guise - artillery, heavy armour or light support? Once more a hybrid is possible of course, but you won't be getting in more than one or two of each. Then you can distil the choices further; what Russ variant, artillery piece of Hellhound variant etc. A bit of a simplification true, but it's a good starting point I find :tu: Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/299415-what-should-i-look-for-in-am/#findComment-3865453 Share on other sites

Altasmurf
The main thing is to determine how you wish to engage your opponent. The guard are capable of building any kid of list. Some basic army styles Infantry gunline, blobs, heavy weapon team, vet squads and so many models your opponent can't kill them all Mechanized, vets and chq in chimeras with support from tanks, sentinels, and vendettas. Tank heavy, tank commander, 2 vet squads in chimera, and a heavy support section full of russes. Airborne, valkryies full of vets and storm troopers supporting ground forces Combined arms, a little bit of everything, guard do this quite well as their units are cheap and you can 2 of what you may feel are key units. Rapid strike, stormies in primes, valks and vendettas, rough riders strike fast and hard and then use mobility to back of when things get hot And even then there are a tonne more options so you need to at least find an army style that matched your style and models that you wish to put down on the table. Boomkapow
If you don't like blobs, don't take them. For troops, go Mechanized Vets. Not only are they not cheap (Points Wise) so you won't need 100 of them, but they are also a kick @$$ unit. This, combined with other tanks and flyers and junk, makes a solid start to an army. I'm not going to lie to you, Guard are not the cheapest nor most expensive, army in the game. It is, however, one of the most fun and rewarding. Altasmurf
I'm more than willing to expand on my thoughts or if someone else wants to take the ideas and run with it I'm all for it. If you were to start a post I'd more then willing to add to it. scatmandoo
Brilliant, i won't steal your work in that case. The forum currently has a lot of new players to the guard way and giving a one stop shop on how they play and army styles should be good for them. If you start off a new post expanding the ideas so a newbie would understand them, on what you have done already, and then i am sure we can have it stickied for help for the future. Tiger9gamer
Actually I want to go tank heavy for sure, as it seems that it can be done with FW (tank company omg) or without (woooooo tank commander) only problem is it still seems incredibly expensive point wise! I may post some lists sometime in the future over my thoughts for certain stuff. (why oh why is the new Solar Auxillia so damn awesome) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/299415-what-should-i-look-for-in-am/#findComment-3866809 Share on other sites
scatmandoo
Going the Codex route with pask leading the way is a good idea. Just have 2 vet squads in chimeras. Use the rest of the points on tanks, sentinels and even air support. Tiger9gamer
would a company command be worth it even because I think that is eating up quite a lot of points. and only two vets? scatmandoo
You wouldn't need a company command squad if you took a tank commander in your HQ slot. Just need the 2 vet squads in transport with some specials to help fill in where the tanks are lacking and you're sorted. WarriorFish
Agreed, unless you're reaching higher point values you'll likely only need one. A CCS is good if you have the infantry to receive orders or if you need a cheap HQ, but if you're taking a tank commander you're not worried about points Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/299415-what-should-i-look-for-in-am/#findComment-3871562 Share on other sites
Disciple of Caliban Sgt
Also don't forget you could go Air Cav if you want small elite. Add a mix of tanks and you could have a small elite force (not too much infantry) with enough planes you could have a nice force. If that is your thing of course. Would love to read this! Forum has lots of WIP threads lately but not so much on tactics. With GWs "new" and fast release cycle came a decline in blogs / posts about strategies if my observation is correct.
