KBA's "March of The Legions" Diorama

KBA

Recommended Posts

After joining The March, I started thinking what it would be like to have all 18 legionaries displayed. I thought it would look great to make one big diorama out of this challenge. I know not all 18 legions were present at the siege, but I still think a 9 on 9, traitor vs loyalist battle diorama is something worth putting together.

Here, I'll have a place to update with WIP pics from modelling stages to paint, the construction of the diorama base itself, and to keep the March of The Legions thread a little cleaner.

First up, due to reverse order, is the Alpha Legion, XX.

And some paint:

Are you already planning out other figures and how they'll all work together cohesively, or is that something you'll work on as the March goes on?

Also, Anaziel, you using my old avatar keeps throwing me off, thinking I'm seeing old posts of my own or something.

Awesome. I really like the use of the helmet and the tartaros shoulder pads, even though it makes the model look quite different than the usual aesthetic. Well done.

The paint looks a bit bright for the XX Legion. More like smurfs, and the roman crest does not help with an AL look either.

Now where do I get that helmet to build me a PA chaplain?

BCK: Sorry brother! :P

Refering to what Crixus said, the whole point of the March Of Legions is to show diferent "versions" of the 18 legions to inspire people so I think its cool to have an alpha legionary with a crest. Maybe not sneeky, but awesome.

I know it's Enkomi's helmet. What I wanted to know is who sells it separately and who has it in stock.

Bitzbox occasionally has it on stock. Otherwise I would try Ebay if I were you.

Thanks smile.png. I was going to chop off the crest, and stick with the skull-faced assassin look for my prime, but kept it because I love how it injects 30K into the model, and how it's a reminder that the Alpha Legion may be sneaky, but it's still a legion -- roman inspired, complete with crests, big banners, and vexillas. Duncan Rhodes' Sons of Horus were a big inspiration.

Well onto planning how everything's going to fit together. Really excited to try something different for next month's XIX.

Mold line on his left leg, mold line on his left leg! tongue.png

He looks good. As for not being sneaky, back before they became Team Fortress 2 Spy marines, hubris was their main flaw. So this guy can be proud to be Alpha Legion, because AL >>> you all.

Where are the pistols on his hips from?

That mold line.. Argh. It's actually more of a flaw in how the resin set in the mold rather than your traditional mold line that sits on top of the surface. This flaw was recessed into the model -- not something you could scrape off. I could have stuck some green stuff in there, but I didn't have any on hand.

Thanks for the likes and complements, guys :)

Yeah, I know that's not an actual mold line... Mold lines are easier to correct! You could shave the entire thing off, but then you've got a marine with a creepy slim leg that just looks wrong.

but it's still a legion

As I said, a proud legion. When they finally take to the field after playing wet works for weeks, they want you to know who they are.

Sure, the real sergeant is probably in the back looking like an ordinary legionary and the standard bearer is actually the guy they want dead because he messed up three years ago, but still.

XX Legionary

Light’s Disk, the planet’s third, and biggest, moon shone bright in the night’s sky, illuminating the battlefield with light not of its own. Reflecting the system’s starlight into a pale radiance, as if casting some ancient cantrip, it enveloped everything from roaring tanks to the silent dead in steely mist. He looked upon the moon then, it’s haunting glow revealing his warplate from a thousand darknesses, futilely, as no one within three hundred paces would have connected brainstems to receive ocular witness. Where the rays would not go, however, were into the dwellings of his helm’s brow – recessed twin black holes eating the light, refusing to cough up any sort of reflection. His helmed head hung down; a predator unafraid, bored almost. He rose from a knelt position, the plume of his rank like feathers of a headdress from ancient Terra. Scanning the sky slowly, his head darted west.

A comet in the sky at first glance. A second glance magnified and enhanced by onboard systems a hundred fold revealed the truth: a lone Raven seemingly lost from its flight. A Moritat? Disappointment as the onboard systems did their telescopic magic more over. A messenger maybe? The XX Legion’s perfectly laid counter-measures would have silenced any sort of long-range communication. Before the thought had fully registered, his mag-locked bolt rifle was disengaged from his power plant, slung around his waist and into his hands, forearms launching towards shoulders, locking, with his finger a flurry of motion. Three shots rang through the night’s mist sounding as one.

Two hits. Lower thigh. The wind took the blame without much of a grimace given: a lone bolt had struck, and ruptured, the Raven’s flight pack’s fuel line. Waning downwards toward a pile of broken ruin, the comet in the sky grounded with harsh impact. Auspex in one hand, the device already feeding him a range of intel, he drew his power dagger in the other. A low haze of green light joined that of Light’s Disk, running hot off the edge of the blade. It was time to hunt.

++++++++++

It was really fun putting this guy together and painting him. Boy, did the XX legion tempt me to join its ranks. 1 down, 17 to go. Just a couple more shots to show how crazily different this color can be in different lights. It was hard to photograph.

Very nec work indeed.

If I could make one suggestion it would be to thicken the black stripes on the bolter.

Where did you get those nice auto pistols?

My ebay crack resin seller. They're from the FW renegades set. Looking at the photos the disparity difference is quite big compared to the knife's. I'll have to fix that. Also forgot to slap some black on those eye lenses. Oops!

A bit annoyed that I missed this.  You did great work on this guy.  A very nice shade of blue (I trust the white lighting more than the yellow), and the hazard striped power dagger is a clever touch.  But the eyes are blue on blue, when a sharper contrast may have done you better.

I continue to envy your delicious bitz supply

Thanks, Firepower! My bits addiction has served me both good and bad: variety is nice; not having money isn't laugh.png

Newest addition to the dio, and what the AL Headhunter is hunting:

The searing ringing tore through his eardrums, stabbing his brain like hot shrapnel, as his crumpled form struggled to right itself. Finally turning over and leaning on his back, his fingers scraped and scratched at his helm’s release, desperate to end the noise. Vacuum-sealed clasps disengaged with a hiss he couldn’t hear as he threw the malfunctioning Mark IV Destroyer Pattern Astartes helm to his side. Recollecting himself and his surroundings, Veteran Sergeant Tills hung his head down in defeat.

The Eastern Valley had fell to Household Ferrand, the traitor Knights outnumbering and overwhelming the Legio Atarus God Engines. A simple vox-transmission could have warned the Ultramarine 433rd company that their flank had collapsed, but communications had been in disarray upon planet-fall. His squad had been ordered Carrier-Pigeon Protocol. Tills let out a laugh that showered his morning-lit surroundings in sardonicism, but not from the ancient Terran-borne metaphor. The mission had been a tragedy – no, comedy -- of errors that started with his Storm Eagle evading a shower of battle cannon shells on lift-off only to later bathe in the subsequent volley of heavy stubber fire that followed, the pilot careening away off intended course and right into the well-timed swipe of a Reaper Chainsword.

Bailing out on roaring jump jacks, he and his surviving destroyers were forced to act as range practice to a tirade of enemy forces. Most of his men fell to the accurately placed, arcane-powered shots of twisted Mechanicum automatons, but Tills couldn’t be certain. Bounding across the scorched battlefield, he soon found himself alone and untargeted; tracer fire and ray trails no longer zinging horizontally across his field of vision. The false wall of safety quickly crumbled around him as warning alerts sounded and red tinted symbols flashed around his HUD: his armor was breached. He momentarily felt the sting of pain from the pulped, blood gushing stump of broken ceramite and ripped flesh where his knee had once been before his Astartes body released heavy doses of adrenaline into his blood stream, racing through his arteries, along with the accelerated clotting-agent Larraman cells, to the wound site.

Landing on one leg would have been difficult, but nothing was just difficult for the Veteran Sergeant this day. The port side of his jump pack had been struck; ruptured hydraulic control and fuel line fluids joining the blood from his leg, forming a cruel cocktail of liquids which rained under his flight path’s arc. Bracing for uncontrolled impact was the last thing Tills could recall, now righted up against his ruined jump pack. He began recessing from consciousness as his well-disciplined Sus-an membrane began reacting to the extreme trauma of his wound. Quickly, he disengaged the surviving bolt pistol from its mag-lock with his right hand, his left fetching something far more sinister from his waist. The decision was upon him, and soon his enemy would be as well. Fighting in his current condition would only extend the comedy of the day, he thought, as his glance shifted from the bolt pistol to the phosphex bomb in his left hand. Consume himself and the traitors in white-green, coward-chasing flame? Now that would give him something to actually laugh at.

Yes, this is my excuse and I'm sticking to it tongue.png I'm a kit basher. I'm allergic to Green Stuff and Paint. It's a New Years' miracle this even happened.
