A letter to the Commisariat and members of the Militarum

Greetings Commisariat and my siblings in the Astra Militarum,

I am ArcticPaladin, you may call me AP for short if you so please, and I write to you to announce the impending arrival of the beginnings of my regiment. They are a mighty collection of men and women drawn from the world of Libertas, which resides in the Liber Cluster (see link in signature). They share the world with the Adeptus Astartes chapter known as the Eagles of Glory. As such, the regiment mimics the chapter's combat doctrine of heavy firepower and armoured might.

The 13th Libertasian has been relocated to the Greater Imperium to act, primarily, as a seige force to attack xenos and heretic strongholds across the Segmentum Tempestus. The regiment looks to spread it's name across the galaxy and bring glory to the Emperor, beloved by all, by breaking His foes upon the anvil of the Astra Militarum. An expeditionary force moving into the Segmentum Tempestus is suspected to arrive in about a month's time, with the bulk of the force arriving at a later date. Warp storms in the Liber Cluster are preventing full scale relocation to the Greater Imperium. I suspect that my regiment will mostly operate in snowy environments and will be prepared to do so by adopting appropiate camoflauge amongst the infantry, though vehicles will retain their rich navy blue to pay homage to their homeworld's holy defenders.

I look forward to serving alongside my brothers and sisters in the Astra Militarum. May the Emperor smile upon us in our duty to serve Him and bless us with courage and honour.

Until next we meet,

AP

Hmm, yes your paperwork seems to be in order. Welcome to the barracks AP! :D A snow themed army will be cool, we're still lacking in their number a bit. Will you be using Cadian models for your troopers? I look forward to seeing your regiment forming up :tu:

I will indeed be using Cadians, and there will be many footsoldiers! I don't game, so I'll be collecting whatever strikes my fancy or whatever is needed for painting events (new camera in the near future aswell! :) ).

I'm saving up right now to get a pair of cadian boxes and maybe a commisar or a tank, not sure yet. Earliest ETA is mid December and latest is mid-late January.

Now, I'm not too well versed in AM lore craft, though I've done it for Astartes, so any pointers for laying down some foundation background for the regiment?

+++Message Begins+++

From: The Commissariat

To: The Commander, 13th Libertasian

On behalf of the God Emperor and the Imperium of Man, welcome to the Astra Militarium ArcticPaladin.

Your troops are to progress directly to the mustering field for inspection to ensure no trace of taint or heresy are present.

Senior command staff are to attend briefings on customs and expected behaviour.

Be warned, any failure will meet extreme sanction. Lord Commissar WarriorFish is a fair man but do not test him.

For the Emperor!

I am a little like you, as at the moment I am collecting my force with a painters rather than a gamers point of view. I get a model because I like the look of it or it follows my fluff not because of how effective it may be on the table.

It will be nice to see some snow camouflage for a change, the desert is becoming a little full at the moment ;)

Have you given any thought on the camouflage? Are you going for plain white or are you going to try out some real life patterns which tend to have darker speckled patterns of greys and black? Looking forward to seeing it,whatever you go for :)

Try searching for images of Arctic camouflage patterns on the internet as this can be a great help when deciding on a scheme.

I've been thinking a plain light blue-greyish colour and a grey would be an easy basic scheme. Or maybe a winter-ified chocochip. Perhaps I may go for a flecktarn, tiger stripe, or MARPAT scheme. I'm not quite sure yet, I just know I want a snow theme 'cause I always see temperate or desert schemes.

from the description you gave us i think an artillery brigade is what your army might represent. using heavy artillery to obliterate their fortresses. luckely for you the imperial guard work very well game wise as an artillery force too! spending a minimum of 560 pts (2 company command squads, 4 veteran squads) gives you acces to 6 heavy support slots, each which can hold up to 3 artillery tanks/units each! that's a total of 18 tanks just on the heavy artillery, without taking into account support vehicles, spotters etc.

here are a couple of fluffy units that will be a lot of fun to build, and yet can still make an effective army list:

-3 basilisks, preferebly with enclosed compartment due to the icy environment. you can construct these from plasticard, or go forgeworld

-3 sentinels to act as spotters, i would go for the fully enclosed version due to the hostile icy environment.

-some infantry, maybe with mortars?

lore wise a planet will be able to supply multiple regiments, and each regiment can focus on something else, depending on what the bureaucracy wants them to be. since you want your force to focus on besieging xeno fortresses i would pick an artillery company since these have the highest chances of actually surviving a siege (especially in comparison to the regiments that are send into the breach themself) and thus more chance to make themselves renowned for it.(because lets face it, on the scale the imperium wages war on a company is even lucky to survive a single campaign without being joined to another depleted company)

Welcome to the Guard, son. Secondments are open to join the Separatist Tarosian Empire if you grow tired of the tyrant's whip. :P

Looking forward to the winter camo scheme, not something we get to see a lot here!

Thank you all for the welcomes! I assure you all that tanks and such will be in abundance when transportation fleets arrive in the Greater Imperium! Due to warpstorms seperating the Liber Cluster from the Greater Imperium, it may take a while for them to arrive. But nonetheless they will arrive! A scouting detachment has been sent in advance and will arrive in about a month's time, so the regiment will slowly begin it's fortifaction of it's main headquarters on the snow covered world of Glacia!

From here, the regiment will branch out on decimate xenos grasp on many worlds and deliver the Emperor's Wrath upon them. May Him on Terra bless the regiment in all it's endeavours, for they are all carried out for the glory of Him!

I don't think there's much difference between a collector, painter and player with Guard. We're just odd like that :P Elmo has a good point about winter camo, there's a few ways you can do it so it'll need some thought. A wintery chocochip would work - camo is mostly about picking the right combination of colours I think :)

As for lore, regimental backgrounds can be extremely varied so it's probably easier if you let us know what sort if ideas or themes you might like and we can make suggestions. Save a tank for the Big Guns painting challenge too ;)

Welcome fellow soldier. May the Emperor bless those who fight on such hostile worlds to purge the galaxy of our many enemies.

Look forward to seeing how it all turns out and there is word of a painting challenge in this very forum coming up soon.

I see the regiment as a glory-driven force of reckle... fearless soldiers. Their tactics will consist of bringing large amounts of firepower, whether it be sheer numbers of infantry or vehicles, to bear on the enemy. None shall escape their fury as they add yet another victory to their battle roll and bring glory and honour to not only their names, but also to the name of the Emperor. Self sacrifice is expected, only by throwing yourself at the enemy without fear or second thought is the only way to gain honour in the regiment.

Sounds like you can work with that quite easily. Stuff like there being much contest for people vying for places in joining the regiment, and jostling from commanders to be the first batch sent to the wider Imperium. You'd just need to fill in some of the background to their World and culture and you'd be well on your way :tu:

You heard that right baz, Big Guns Never Tire will have a preliminary announcement very soon :)

I was skimming through the AM codex today, just incase I want to game and somepoint and have legal loadouts, and my oh my. FOC-ception, God-Emperor have mercy on me if I decide to game!

The 13th Libertasian hriginally hails from the mighty world of Libertas, an Astartes world in the Liber Cluster. The world is loosely (read:mostly) based of the USA in a rather... stereotypical (?) Manner. That is, getting in er'body's business and sending excessive amounts of firepower into theatres of war, all the while stepping on people's toes. Hubris is the biggest shortcoming of the world's denizens, none moreso than it's Astartes protectors. Vehicles act as mobile museums of the regiments victories across the galaxy, adorned with much gold and iconography. And shiny gold is always prefered over plain jane silver/ gunmetal on vehicles, after all, they're what are used to show how much :cuss you kick. Infantry rarely get the chance to earn their bling-age, but officers and (lord) commisars will not pass up the chance to display just how dedd 'ard they are.

It'll be fun painting the camo I have yet to chose for the infantrymen en masse. I must admit, navy and gold gets quite dull after a bit!

++Welcome, fellow Commander.++

+Trust in the Emperor, comrade, and He will bring you many glorious victories!+

+Glory to the Libertasian 13th! Glory to the Imperium! +

I too look forward to seeing what you come up with. Snow every camo looks absolutely amazing on an entire army.

Don't worry too much about the AM FOC business. You'll get the hang of that soon enough, and until then, you could ask one of the many experts here. msn-wink.gif

Cool, in that case, I'll save my Wyvern for the time being. All basecoated and sad!happy.png

Greetings all, I bear good and bad news..Bad news first, as to end my post on a high note; after a humiliating attempt to become a real guardsman I have returned home following a medical discharge, breaking my leg the first day out was a great ego boost. Bad news aside and on to good news, the Libertasian 13th will finally come to fruition! They will become the 14th due to taboo unlucky numbers, and I'm looking for a bit of advice. Is it viable to employ green tide tactics with the guard?

yes, but you'll still need some heavy hitters, and will likely not be very competitive in maelstrom games due to limited mobility. It also takes ages before you've painted, deployed, moved and fired over 200 guardsmen

If a horde type of play is really what you want i would suggest adding enough buff units such as priests and inquisitors to boost your units even more. You may even want to check out the DKoK assault brigade, which can bring back wiped out platoons.

Excellent! I was thinking of running an infantry heavy list with armor and transports thrown in the mix for good measure.

Sorry to hear of your bad luck. Good luck on for the future.

As for horde, it takes forever to move models and complete a turn which makes quick games long and can get quite tiresome. And as said you will probably suffer in maelstrom games.

Their loss is our gain it seems ;) I wouldn't say humiliating though, accidents happen to even the best! Rest well - fortunate that you don't need legs to model and paint ;)

hendrik covers it well, the Guard horde is not only viable but can also be a potent force to reckon with. You will soon learn to recognise the moment your opponent realises he is woefully under equipped to handle your army
