irwit
Hi all Quick question and apologies if the answer is in the rule book, I dont have one on me until the weekend. Basically just trying to find some advantages to running a squadron of Leman Russ tanks. So for example, say I have no sponsons and run them all side by side and a squad of melta deep strike and can hit the side armour of one tank but cannot see the other 2, can they still destroy the entire squadron. Also if one is destroyed, can it then be used as cover if everyone stays still? CoffeeGrunt
Hits are always allocated to the closest model in a Squadron, so and rolls for Penetration are rolled against whatever facing the nearest tank is presenting. This means you can deploy tanks in a "fan" shape to present only their front AV of 14 to the enemy from most angles. Provided the tank doesn't Explode, it remains as wreckage granting a 5+ Cover Save to any model behind it, yes. irwit
so if you have 10 meltas shooting a squadron of 3 leman russ tanks you can only destroy one leman russ per turn? Also I guess its actually a big advantage having a squadron as you can basically extend the angle of influence of your front facing armour by quite a lot. Good to know for sentinels etc . Lucien Eilam
so if you have 10 meltas shooting a squadron of 3 leman russ tanks you can only destroy one leman russ per turn? No, read the section on Vehicle Squadrons. Unlike shooting at other units, you resolve hits one at a time. When the nearest tank is destroyed, you move on to the next nearest. irwit
Apologies as I do not have my rulebook until the weekend. So if you cannot see the next vehicle, can you still destroy it, ie you are all side by side and shooting from the side, and secondly, if see the side armour of the first does that automatically mean you see the side armour of the second? CoffeeGrunt
You Hit and roll to Penetrate against the stats of one Leman Russ, but any excess damage after that nearest one dies is carried through to the rest of the squadron. So 10 Meltas can get the bonus D6 on Penetration from Melta by all standing next to one tank, and use it to kill all the tanks, even if they weren't in Melta range of them all. PureFodder
When shooting at vehicle squadrons you essentially have to work out each shot individually. All shots hit the closest vehicle first and once that has taken enough damage to destroy it, you start taking hits on the second closest vehicle using it's armour facing/cover/line of sight etc. Unfortunately this can make it a bit of a pain to resolve as it can take a while, especially when the shots have a chance to explode the first vehicle. Hmm, I'll have to give this another read. I always thought everything rolled at once, but it would be a nice buff to be wrong! Lucien Eilam
Hmm, I'll have to give this another read. I always thought everything rolled at once, but it would be a nice buff to be wrong! It's pretty clear. Gets a sub-section all to itself: Shooting at Squadrons When a squadron of vehicles is shot at, roll To Hit as normal. Once you have determined the number of hits, these hits must be resolved, one at a time, against the model in the squadron closest to the firing unit – exactly like you would resolve Wounds on a normal unit. Once the nearest model in the squadron is destroyed (i.e. is Wrecked or Explodes!), the next hit is allocated against the new nearest model, and so on. (GW's emphasis.) librisrouge
Yeah, I had a situation like this once that lead to an argument. The SW player dropped some meltaguns in front of Pask and buddy, acing the buddy with the first meltagun shot. I think pointed out that Pask was too far away for the next shot to get the extra d6. It took a lot of convincing to show him. Somewhat ironically, he still rolled a 6 and glanced me (I failed my cover save to boot.) The Executioner Pask murdered them with sweet plasma fire vengeance the next round. WarriorFish
Good rules bashing, well done everyone :tu: Vehicle squadron rules can seem a little odd at first but they're well worth learning - not just so you get them right of course! For example a squadron's vehicles can fire through each other as if they weren't there :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/299677-how-do-vehicle-formations-effect-what-side-you-hit/#findComment-3871008 Share on other sites
