Grey Knight Strike Force (with pictures)

Ok, here's this week's update. Purifiers are coming along, but still WIP, and I don't want to post too many WIP shots of the same unit. Instead, here's what's in the pipeline:

A Librarian:

Nothing special, but I think he'll look nice painted. Once his barrels are drilled, anyway.

And a GM with a couple of different weapon options. First, the soul glaive:

And the hammer:

And a close-up of the cloak:

As you can see, there's much work left to do on the GM. I am very proud that I got a smooth finish on the cloak--it's the first time I've tried something like this, and that alone is an achievement. But it looks too plain, so I plan to add some folds (and cover up at least the one on the left, which is in the wrong place). I'd welcome any advice from experienced modelers on this one--I am more of a painter, and a little out of my depth.

Thanks!

Thanks for the comments.  Rurik, I agree--cloak needs more job.  I hope to post an update soon, with some actual surface texture.

Coolpants, I like the old psycannon for this guy as it makes him look more dynamic, but I am fond of the giant heavy weapon on a regular terminator.  I do like the old metal models in general, though, and wish they were a little more available.

Tomsev, the fist does look huge in the first photo.  I think that's an artifact of the camera and not the model itself, as it isn't as bad in the other photos. Once I paint him I will try a photo from the side to see.  I had thought about using the DA cloak, but I figured making one from scratch would be a worthwhile challenge.  If it doesn't come out, I will scrap it and use the DA cloak instead.  How did you get it to fit the GK back?  If I remember, the attachment points are spaced a bit too wide to fit easily.

Since the sun is setting and it's Friday, here is where the Purifiers are at:

Photo quality isn't the best, but the real camera is out of batteries and the phone doesn't do depth of field very well. Still, you can see the fire. I still have a few details to hammer out on these guys, but it shouldn't be too much longer.

IndigoJack, I will work up a proper tutorial on the flames when I get a little time, but for now here is the process:

1.stick a blob of greenstuff on the weapon and smooth out the inevitable fingerprints.

2.cut/pull it into shape with clippers. I use the same ones I use to cut plastic parts off of sprues. There's no need to use water or any other lubricant, as you want the putty to stick to the clippers a little bit. Then, when you pull in the direction of the fire, the individual flames will elongate and taper naturally.

3.use tweezers to pull flames out a bit more and make sure everything is going in the right direction.

4.use a sculpting tool to push in slightly at the base of the bigger flames. That helps blend the whole thing into the weapon and gives a little more texture.

5.once the whole thing is dry, cut away any extra bits of putty at the tops of the flames. You can also coat some/all of the flames with liquid greenstuff if you want to smooth out the surface texture.

Based on my experience painting these, I would say it's better to create fewer, larger flames than what I did here. It will be easier to paint and will register more clearly to the people looking at the mini. Also, don't use old greenstuff. I used some 5 year old putty on the Purifiers, and it shows if you look closely. The Soul Glaive was made from new putty, and the exact same process got much better results.

To come soon: completed purifers, Grand Master and Librarian, and Dreadknight number 1.

  • 3 weeks later...

Purifiers finally done! These guys were a bit of a slog, but they have been a part of my vision for this project from the beginning, so I'm glad to have made it happen.

The first five:

The second five:

Dreadknight and characters to come soon!

Also, I need to figure out how to update my photo setup...
