Starting a All Terminator Army and have some questions

Howdy Everyone. Going to make a big purchase soon to start my All Termy list and have some modelling questions. I plan on getting 4-5 Terminator Squads on the table, and was wondering if its worth getting any regular terminator kits in to mix up poses. do you think the vanilla terminators will look out of place or will there be enough stuff from the other kits to make them look suitably Space wolf-esque? I was thinking 3 space wolf terminator and 1 vanilla to start. Also, does anyone know were the head comes from on that Converted terminator rune priest from the book? Hes using the regular Terminator Chaplain body, but they give him a wolf skull for a helm. Would love to make one of those So I figure this is the right place to ask. And finally, If anyone has Loadouts for specific squads, I would love to hear about them. I really have no clue tactically how I will play this army, But my vague plan is to have about 4-5 squads of terminators, supported by 2 Dreads(probably gonna be more shooty). Anyways, thanks for reading. I know it was kind of a ramble haha.

unless you  particularly like the look of the standard termis I dont see why you  couldn't just get 4 boxes of wolf guard termis

ive built 4 boxes of wolf guard and personally it is always a bit of an adventure each time

Not trying to kick sand on your birthday cake just sayin if you want that authentic wolf look  might as well use em but getting your hands on  a CML certainly wont hurt , also theres certainly enough bits to wolf up the vanilla termis.

I also wanna know whre the particular wolf skull helm comes

As far as loadouts go

It really depends on what you wanna do   Combi Meltas are only 5pts per model  so outfitting whole squads wit em  and cheap power weapon  / stormshields ( which we can get for free ) can help keep costs down

the four boxes  I  made  were

5x  Twin Wolf Claws  (For the Void Claw Formation  in Champions of Fenris also .... wolf claws brah )

5x TH SS  ( For the Arjac Rockfist Formation  aka Super Hammer bros  aka Team Hammertime )

The other two packs were more tactical  Power Axes , Stormshields , everyone gets a gun so they can call it a combi Melta , some stormshields , theres an assault cannon on one of the 10 guys , and I  got a Cyclone Missile Launcher from my brother

Also For Tactical Termis you  can stick 5 of em in a Drop Pod  which can lead to very impressive Turn one Delete the most threatening thing on the board with combi melta tactics !

Drop Pod combi-bombs is what you want for the most part. You won't be a capping army, but complete extermination. So basically, 3*5 TDA with a few free SS and combi-plasmas or meltas (same on one unit though) in 3 pods, a Land Raider with a few more shooty TDA (no pure melee, because they might get stuck somewhere when the Raider dies) and two more pods with Dreads.

Here is a favourite setup of mine for a combi-bomb:

5 TDA

- SS/CM (Pack Leader)

- SS/CM

- SS/CM

- WC/CM

- CF/CM

in a drop pod with Deathwind Launchers.

As for modelling, I would only get the SW TDA, they have the right amount of bits to make yourself those combi-bombs I mentiond above. While you would need to make combi-weapons yourself (or buy them in ebay), you have the bits to make SS/combi-weapon guys and the right wolfy looks. You will not need Thunderhammer or Powerfists, so regular TDA are out.

Awesome. Exactly the advice I needed and was looking for! I will just stick to the Space Wolf boxes then. I think im just going to find some CML's on ebay. I found a picture of that wolf priest. hes the guy in the back on the left. anyone know that helmet? It looks like he has the pelt from the Terminator kit.

Actually, it won't be so bad to get just one box of regular Termies with the CML. The normal termies can be mixed and matched with Wolf Guard Terminators to make them wolfy, and you get to have more spare wolf bits.

From an army aesthetic point of view, I'd massively say stick with the SW boxes, and just spend a little extra to get CML's off eBay

The WGT box is superior in pretty much every way to the (now very dated) vanilla marine terminators.

If memory serves(that's questionable as its Monday morning-early Monday morning), that helm for the Wolf Priest in TDA is a conversion using one the wolf skulls that come in the Wolf TDA box set. I'm pretty sure its described in that art & modelling book that came with my WG Ed. so I'll check tonight when I can get home.

Thanks to everyone for all the information. didn't expect to get so many responses so fast. I'm debating if I want to buy an extra box of Terminators to use in converting all my characters. My wallet is gonna hurt. I also really want that Logan Grimnar model but refuse to use the chariot. 60 bucks for a plastic terminator is hard to justify!

@Rift Blade - Thanks for looking for me man! That model looks awesome.

I would seriously recommend magentising your terminators arms.

Its relatively easy to do on terminators (due to the larger shoulder pieces, (ie easier than a tactical marine), and the lower model count means its not too much of a chore.

We have loads of wargear options, and magnetising means you are much more flexible when it comes to trying different things (lets say you want to try out the void claws formation one day, and try arjacs shieldbrothers the next..), and also future-proofs against newer codexs (not that i think we'll see one in a while, but ya never know).

the head on the Wolf Priest in the codex is the skull from he Space Wolf Venerable Dreadnought kit.

The wolf Guard terminators is nice but you won't have enough to build shield breakers or void claws from a single box. so multiple boxes is will be fine. I thknk there is enough for 3 TH/SS or 3 double claws in each box.

The Power Sword is a bit pathetic looking, and the axe is nice. the assault cannon is great as it has the ammo feed the vanilla assault cannon doesn't have. I don't think the Wlf Guard box comes with a heavy Flamer.

I have used 2 boxes of Wolf Guard Termies, a Vanila Terminator squad, good for another power sword and cyclone missile launcher. swapping shoulder guards and legs all fit tgether nicely and give wolf items on everything need.

If you want to spend a bit more money, the grey knight terminators are fun. ignore the legs and torso, the arms are what your after. the wolf Guard shoulders fit them no problem a bit of filling or green stuff gets rid of all the ][ signs. This gives you nice wrist mounted storm bolters and giant power swords just like the boss has (Logan)

The Chaos Terminators box comes with 3 giant power axes - always a good source and loads of skulls and stuff to sprinkle around.

Tactical Space marines has a couple of plasma pistols, so carefully cutting a storm bolter in half and cutting the handle of a plasma pistol makes a nice combi plasma.

I've made mine from I think 3 Wolf Guard, 1 grey knights, 1 vanilla and 1 chaos. Has given me enough to make 3 Assault Cannon, 1 Heavy Flamer, 1 Cyclone, 5 void claws, 5 shield breakers. and a splattering of power weapon /  chainfist and storm bolter guys. got enough to field 25 terminators. just got to make sure you spread out the space wolf hammers / shields / claws / cannon on the non space wolf bodies and vice versa to keep the theme looking right.

if you've got a spare grey hunters box there are enough wolf tails / pelts / skull to wolfy-fy mot things.

The Skull head is from the new SW Dread kit. And yes, that is the SW TDA kits pelt on the Priest as well.

I use a mixture of 2 SW TDA kits to 1 SM TDA kits to build my terminators. It makes less repetition if you are indeed planning on playing a lot of TDA. I have over 40 terminators now, and I have been able to make each one unique. I do not have a single bare head repeated throughout that portion of my army.

My go to pack was always:

PA/Combi

PA/Combi

WC/Combi

WC.Combi

PS/SB/CML

Good fire power, a really nice swiss army knife pack, if you will. But as mentioned, getting SS for free now, their addition is very much welcomed. Immersturms pack load out is pretty darn tootin good. If you can find the balance between enough shooty, enough smashy, and enough invulnerable savey, you're doing it right.

I think with the access to two great and thematic terminator formations, modeling them is worth your while, if you like and play to use them. Five TH/SS and 5 2xWC.

Welcome to the highly addictive world of Space Wolf Terminators!! It's ok to admit you've a problem before you've even begun!!

End of Line

Listen to the man. Where I just throw in 1-2 TDA units in pods and kit them out as efficiently as possible in my eyes but mainly focus on characters and TWC, he is the TDA man through and through. Those things are in his soul :D
