Zeal
Hello, I've been attempting a metallic red orange as this one here http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/File:Exorcists_Battle-Brother.jpg and been having limited success. The closest I've come is a layer of evil suns over (ye olde) Shining Gold. Does anyone have some better advice / experience? Ideally I'd like to build layers instead of mixing paints, and I'm trying to keep the metallic sheen through the red / orange. Many thanks guys! Bryan Blaire
Have you tried painting the whole model (base coat, shading and highlighting) as silver metal, then tinting everything with a single coat of Lamenters Yellow, followed by a coat of Bloodletter? Then if you want it more opaque or to just tweak the color to a more red, simply do another coat of Bloodletter. Zeal
I have not tried that, that's interesting. Hmm, I'll need Yellow glaze. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/300126-metallic-redorange-eg-exorcists/#findComment-3882262 Share on other sites
Lucien Eilam
I'd probably go with 1-2 thinned coats of Tamiya Clear Orange instead of multiple Citadel Glazes, but otherwise the same idea. It's pretty much that exact colour already. Zeal
Ok! So a metallic base and layers of red glaze topped off with some satin varnish work pretty well, but requires 8-10 coats of glaze. What happens if I throw some evil sunz scarlet together with some bloodletter glaze to try and concentrate it? Will it mix alright? Spaz431
I'm watching this thread with intent. I would like to get into NMM or something like it for my future blood angels project. ElectricPaladin
I just paint it red, but finish it with a half-gloss so it still looks a little shiny. Durus
I'd say Ink over silver metallics is the easiest solution. The FW 30k Nightlords scheme is metallic too, if I remember correctly and they used Tamiya Clear paints for that. Their Brass Scorpion has Tamyia Red over a gold basecoat too. Vallejo's liquid metal brand of paints tend to be a bit more shiny/reflective than citadel paints too, so would probably be a good base for such a tinting method. You can also buy metallic mediums, just mixing metallics with regular paint tends to suck the saturation out of the paint though. If you take a look around for airbrush paints you'll find iridescent, pearlized and other special effects paints as well. I have no first hand experience with them but I've heard about people using the Createx line for miniatures, there are loads of different brands of pigments for car paints though, but I have no clue if you can use those with acrylic paints and apply them in thin enough coats to be a viable alternative for miniatures. Worth investigating though if you are interested in getting the metallic sheen. ninjasuperspy
I absolutely can't say enough nice things about Badger's Ghost Tints. Airbrush a coat or two on top of some silver (I'm using Alclad but YMMV). I've been trying to get some decent result out of Citadel Glazes and I'm going to be honest I almost can't get them to stick to anything. Subtle Discord
Vallejo also has a Metallic Medium product that you might want to investigate if you really do want a metallic (with that slight metal flake/sparkle to it) colour that doesn't come directly out of a bottle. I got some of the Metallic Medium (haven't had time to use it yet) so I could make diluted silvers and golds for blending those colours, and I think it will work well once I get a chance to play with it. What I've heard when reading about it, is that it's very good for making your own metallic colours; sounds just like what you're trying to do. So, if you're looking for options it might be worth considering. Chaeron
Hard to get that metallic, as others have alluded to... Just go with Jokaero and glaze perhaps?
