Creating My army

and then alpha strike them (using the drop pod assault rule to allow them to turn up on turn one),

There's still an outstanding question on whether this is allowed or not. Some of us have written to GW to answer the question in a FAQ. The issue being that you never need to make a reserve roll for a DP entering turn 1. The formation however states that on a successful reserve roll, they both come in. I guess in order to not have a lengthy debate with your opponent, it might be a better idea to bring this formation in after turn 1.

Ok, fair one. I kinda just assumed that the roll would take affect if you decided not to have them come in on turn one. I'll hold off with model building then.haha. I hope it is aloud. That would be a serious alpha strike!

i know that feeling. i'd love to be able to buy everything, but unfortunately there are other companies that want to take all my money before GW / FW take it. ><

However warriors of the fang box set and the paint bundle are on my agenda + a standard tactical marine unit box. should kick things off nicely.

I wish I could just buy loadsa stuff too but I already have about 3000 points of wolves, so I get disapproving looks when I buy anything.haha. The last thing I bought was the Stormclaw box and that definatly landed me in trouble. (I did kinda just buy it cuz I love the Krom model!haha. He is the only thing out of the box I have painted and put together so fair.)

The issue I have is that I built my army when I was much younger and bought things that looked cool but don't really fit my style of play. So I'm now trying to rectify it and build an army that plays well without spending huge amounts of cash.

I'm not sure what I will get next, possibly some more Skyclaws, they work really well for me and having 10 of them and a wolf priest running around cutting units to pieces would be great. Although i have a brain itch that's making me want to build some deathwatch marines so I'm tempted with a tactical box and some bits out of other chapter kits to flavour the models with.

sounds like a plan.

haha the disapproving look ... seen it many a time. maybe thats what makes it worse, the fact that all you painted was krom and nothing else lol.

is it only a maximum of like, e.g. 2 flamers per unit. or is it 2 flamers per 5 models? cause obviously the standard unit is 5 guys, and it just says a maximum of 2 men in the unit can take .. blah blah blah?

I know, I will get round to building the rest, but it need to decide how to build them first. I'm not going to bother with the suggested stormclaw units as I will never play the campaign and the formation is a bit immobile for regular games. I need to work out if I want another GH unit or if I want to make a wolf guard thunder strike formation. I am also tempted to start an Ork hoard with the orks from stormclaw. There is nothing quite like throwing 100s of bodies and units of stompy dreads across the board at a bewildered looking marine player who has 30 marines and a couple tanks. I played as orks before I started my wolves army.

As for the Skyclaws you only get the 2 flames per unit unfortunately, no matter the size. I suppose you could run two smaller units and give them both 2 flamers, then just move them around together. The only issue with it is that you can only join your wolf priest to one unit so half of them would miss out on his preferred enemy. Unless you had two wolf priests I suppose. Also it would take up two of you fast attack slots.

My fiancée is very understanding really, she bought me a whirlwind last year for Xmas, thats still only half painted too! She even tries to talk to me about 40k sometimes. She soon glazes over and is clearly not interested in the slightest, but at least she tries!haha.

This might be my other problem, I get distracted by new shiny things before I finish the last unit I bought. I have more than a few half finished projects!

also a very valid point. new shiny things are the bane of our existence. It's a naughty trick!!

And i think if a girl ever actually tried to engage me in conversation about the hobby ... after being silently stunned for a few minutes ... i'd probably marry her. thats how i roll!

yea i guess 2 units could work, but like you said it'd be handy to have a priest in each, although i find a unit of 5 a piece wouldn't last too long. I mean they could keep close around the table but i always find smaller units of them die off fast. I'd probably run maybe 6/7 and then a priest with them. beef the squad up a little bit, extra bodies for combat and such, especially as in recent games ive found a unit of 10 becomes a prime target. It's almost like people dont want them to get up in their face or something.

Yea, they do get a lot of attention but when they hit they do some damage! I duno know if I could run units of 6 or 7, the brain itch would get angry because it would feel incomplete. That's why I'm thinking alpha strike GH with CCWs and meltas and deathwind pod then the Skyclaws will either get ignored for a bit, or have some back up when they hit.

I think the main thing I'm worried about is the fact that there is so much detail on sw models, and I'm worried my painting will let it down. I've watched a load of painting tutorials etc which has helped me see the best way to go about it. However I like to get things done so I will have to limit myself and take my time lol.

I'm used to standard marines with very little in the way of details (like pelts, chains, iconography etc).

Which I why for models like the TWC I may hold off until I'm more confident with my painting. Well, I suppose I can still get them and run them unpainted but that just looks lame lol.

I know that feeling. And i didn't even paint any miniatures before. Just work slowly and clean up your mistakes. Keep the paint thin! TWC don't have more details on them than regular GH imo and the wolves are even easier to paint detailwise. allthough it takes some practice to get the fur right, but once you have your scheme, it's pretty easy

once i get things flowing i'll post some wip pics in here. still only got a unit of GH with WGPL and a unit of fen wolves >< still, can have a nice 400pt game with them haha

Everyone starts small. A year from now people will tremble at the sight of your force.

I tremble at the sight of his face!

Buy a Stormwolf - you know you want to!

haha cheers la .... <_<

i actually do want to, just the one, for funsies.

and yea i'll definitely be on here regularly looking for tips and tricks on making my wolves a formidable force!

What I have so far then. Unit GH with WGPL. One standard bike with a couple of bits added on. And wolves. Roll on pay day lol

Yea I always ponder that but for me, I don't have many of the tools yet either so hopefully Santa will be good to me this year haha. I'd defiantly drill the gun barrels but I've never really bothered much about mould lines. Might sort them with these though as I want this to be a decent looking army. (if I have it in my capability to do a decent looking army haha)
