Varnish and metallics

Hi, I am wondering if anyone can offer me a bit of advice basedon their experiences with varnish please?

I have been working on my Fire Raptor for my Space Wolves

P1010301

P1010306

P1010303

SAM 2312

As you can see I have been using a wee bit of metallics on it. I have noticed the aint is starting to rub away a little with handling, so I want to protect it.

Now here's the rub... If I hit it all over with matte varnish, will this knock out the nice metallics and dull them tight down?

Sould I use matte on the hull and satin on the metals? Or would gloss work?

I am worried gloss varnish will be too shiny.

I havent used varnishes of any kind to protect my models in the past so consider me a varnishing newbie.

Thanks in advance for your help with this quandary!!

Yep. You'll still be able to tell it's metallic paint, but the shine will be gone.

Gloss will be, well, glossy. Probably not the effect you're after either, judging by the weathering on your gun barrels, for example.

If you want protection worth the name, you'll need a couple of coats of gloss anyway, and then optionally dull it down with matt. Matt varnish alone won't help.

Personally I don't use varnish for protection, and I never have any issues with paint rubbing off. My advice would be to stop handling it any more than necessary, be careful where you do touch it, and fix the paint now and then when accidents happen. My understanding is that's what 'Eavy Metal do with the Studio armies too.

Hahaha... Will do! I am painting by hand and have put a lot of hours into it, so unfortunately handling it has had to be done..

Once she is done handling will be less of a problem. I might go with a coating of gloss, then matte to knock it back, then a dab of satin across the golds, maybe leave the other metals alone... I'd like to give the golds a sheen, without it being excessive.
