New base sizes

As I'm sure you've all seen. The new blood angels models are coming on 35mm bases. I cannot see this being a blood angel specific thing.

So are you guys going to wait for 'official' announcements for all Marines to get the change. Or will any of you jump the gun?

Also if you guys do rebase your models, will you swap bases, or just glue the bigger one underneath?

Also, are there any tactical advantages or disadvantages from having a bigger base?

I can think of a few, but what you guys think?

To me the official base size for a model is whatever size I want it to have. I've got plenty of 25mm sided models on 40mm bases for scenic purposes, and anyone who told me that they weren't playing me because of the size of my models bases would get nothing but a hollow laugh in return :)

Well bigger bases means we can spread out more, meaning less models being under a blast template, but also means we have a larger deepstrike footprint, easier to mishap

Well, the spread distance will be always 2" so no matter the size of the base.

All the new blood angels kits have them.

And yeah you must always be 2" away from another base from your squad, but when determining hits from templates, it's models that's under the template, not the bases, so as the base is larger, you're technical further away

It is looking to be all of the PA models. I for one think its a great opportunity to give all of my bases the details they deserve rather then trying to fit them in on a base barely large enough for my Marines and being afflicted by Wobbly Model Syndrome. Im excited and while I have no doubt that the new base sizes will never be mandatory I will enjoy switching my guys out to the new base sizes. To each his own.

I just hope this doesn't lead to model growth, where all the newly released models become slightly larger than the older ones, taking advantage of their larger base size, so that in an edition or two our beautiful Grey Knight models become pitifully tiny, much like Abaddon compared to the current Chaos Terminators.

A larger base size means the unit as a whole is more likely to be hit by blasts because they occupy a larger part of the table. But it also means less models will be caught by a successful hit, because it's harder for larger bases to fit under the template.

So you're both right.
