I painted this guy, I went for some NMM style highlighting on the barrel of the gun. lenses are not finished yet.

let me know what you Think!

Good to be back in the hobby again!

I got asked how i made the Sentinel i showed earlier in the thread, so i will make a small tutorial using the tauros venator im painting right now. the tutorial will be several post as i will make as i paint the model.

I dont have Pictures for all of the steps, but here goes:

Step 1:

Clean, fill holes with greenstuff and prime the model White. I paint the components separately, but i did glue the suspension to the main chassis and i glued the weapons on the turret.

then i primed the model White using my airbrush.

Step 2:

painting the rust color and scratches. i painted the entire model with random patches of burnt umber (for rust) and random patches of black/Brown color (for paint chips). all the armor plates that will have paint chips should be covered in these two colors. i paint these patches using the airbrush.

Step 3:

i now sealed the entire model with a coat of satin varnish. This is to protect the rust and scratch color so that we dont remove it and make the primer visible when we do the actual paint chipping.

Step 4:

I sprayed the lower part of the model with AK interactive Heavy chipping fluid and the upper parts with AK interactive worn effects.

Step 5:

i airbrushed the model with administratum grey ad then i highlighted the model with the airbrush using ulthuan grey. the highlight was done in a color modulation style.

in order to make the camo pattern I then cut pieces of masking tape into different angled and jagged shapes and placed these on the model. these will form the camo pattern. if you made any mistakes in the painting leave these areas visible since they will be overpatined with the second camo color in the the next step.

Step 6:

I airbrushed the model with thunderhawk blue and then highlighted the model with fenrisian grey. again the highlighting was made in a color modulation style.

Step 7:

remove the pieces of masking tape to reveal the camo pattern.

Next up is chipping but i havent done that yet, so it will be the next post!

  • 5 weeks later...

So, next part of this mini tutorial. I am sorry for not posting anything for awhile.

after removing the masking tape, we now have a clean and nice camo pattern, but a fighting vehicle should not look this new and shiny, certainly not a vehicle of the 44th Elysian Drop troops regiment. this vehicle have been through several combat drops and is currently deployed in operation firestorm with the objective of capturing the prometheum refinery complex A120004.

after that little piece of fluff we get on to the actual painting process:)

Step 8:

using a toothbrush soaked in warm water i start to brush away at the vehicle where i want the scratches to be. the warm water activates the chipping fluid under the paint layers and makes it come off in nice scratches. you can also use a toothpick and scrape at the paint to create sharper scratches. be careful not to over do this step as we will come back in and add more scratches to extreme edges later.

i Think i did to much scratching on this vehicle, but depending on waht look you are going for this step is very important.

this is the end result of the chipping stage. now i seal the model with satin varnish. otherwise later coats of paint will activate chipping fluid, ruining the paintjob.

Step 9:

Its time to add decals.

i choose the decals i want to use, in this case the regimental emblem and the campaing badge on the sides of the vehicle and the unit marking on the front of the vehicle.

i try to cut the decals as Close to their shape as possible, i then wet them in water and Place some microset decal fluid on the vehicle where decal should go. after placing the decal on the the vehicle i use a large flat brush to try and push any air bubbles out from under the decal.

unit marking

after placing the decals you should cover them with satin varnish. i did not however, but it is best to do it.

next step is a filter layer.

Step 10:

To make the color a little bit more interesting i add an enamel filter. I use AK interactive Blue for Panzer grey, this is an enamel paint so dont use your paintbrushes that you use for acrylics. Also you need some whitespirit to smooth out any pools of paint and to clean your brush.

I paint this all over the model to create a subtle effect which sort of ties the colors together and adds some depth. In some places the enamel paint

pools or the effect becomes too intense, there i go in with a paint brush dipped in White spirit and clean away some of the paint. This is the good thing with enamels and oils, they are very easy to manipulate after they have been placed on the model, just use a paint brush and some whitespirit and you can create all sorts of cool blends and effects.

unfortunately i forgot to take a Picture of this step. but after the filter layer it is important that you let the enamel dry for some hours. i put the model away for the day and let it dry for 24 hours. after it is dry you need to seal it with satin varnish.

Step 11:

now we go in with a little sponge and some rhinox hide paint. i dip the sponge in the paint and the wipes of excess paint on a paper towel, you need very little paint on the sponge. then i just press the sponge againts extreme edges of the vehicle, this gives it a really used and weathered look.

the result:

and that is as far as ive come with this vehicle, next steps are washing, edge highlights and adding streaks.

i hope you Think this is helpful and that you will try the process for your own painting Projects! If you have any questions just ask!!
