BA Marine Size Comparison - Old Base Size vs New Hero-Scale

Very interesting opening up the new BA Tactical squad and seeing what a difference those larger base sizes make when putting a marine together.

It's like your eye needs to fill the negative space and even though the model is the same size, there is just something imposing about just how much room your marine has to swagger around in.

It really does seem to bump them up into the heroscale range, especially if you add even a tiny bit of basing to your model.

This soon to be Knight of Blood (squeels in excitement!) on the right is a good example of just this difference in size.

Your thoughts on the new kit or scale talks?

I'm still waiting to see if other kits get repackaged with the larger bases before I bight the bullet and start rebasing my old models. I also found these, which should make it easier...

Also. Woo! Knights of Blood! FOR THE EMPEROR!

The height of the base, rather than the diameter, is creating the illusion of an imposing heroic scale marine.

I'm not saying I'm against the larger diameter.  I'm just pointing out the slight of hand going on here.

The slight of hand is certainly an alternative for people who don't want to cut apart their minis to add spacers into them to achieve a truescale result.

Achieving a similair affect was something that I was really pleased to see, as well , the larger base size makes the height much easier to add and keep consistent, something the old bases were just too small to do well.

Base height is the same no matter what, that's a given.

The extra diameter is a godsend for those who want to use an open pose, a wide stride, or need that extra room to lavish some extra details, without having their cork overhang on top of their base.

I think we're speaking past each other here.  I meant to say that you can achieve the same effect by basing a Marine on an elevated platform of the current diameter.  The new wider diameter is not a factor.

I think the diameter helps quite a lot with the illusion, though. The smaller bases look weird if you add even pretty moderate amounts of height and, apart from potentially looking a bit daft, often gives an impression of a taller, skinnier marine. The larger diameter makes the height more manageable and makes the marine look bulkier. Pure optical trickery, sure. But it looks pretty darn awesome.

Just curious, but where did you get that knife? It makes the marine look amazing and I wantses its.

The blade is from the space marine scouts, the hand and pommel are from the new codex space marine tactical squad box, it's the Sgt.'s chainsword hand.
