Joining the Heresy

As those nice people at FW finally got round to sending out my christmas gift to myself.  I've decided to dip my toe in the murky waters of 30K gaming as a break from GW's sometime awful, sometime cool 40K experience.

Problem is I not really sure how to proceed.  So I'm going to layout my very rough plan and let you good people tell me where I'm going wrong.

My planned force:

1 x Praetor

1 x Centurion (Iron Hand)

1 x Centurion

1 x Legion Tectical Squad (20 Marines)

1 x Legion Assault Squad (10)

1 x Legion Assault Squad (10)

1 x Legion Tactical Support Squad (10)

1 x Legion Tactical Support Squad (10)

1 x Legion Veteran Tactical Squad (10)

1 x Legion Destroyer Squad (10)

1 x Apothecary Detachment (2)

1 x Legion Terminator Squad (10) or

1 x Contemptor Dreadnough Talon (3)

Still got to chose fast attack and heavy support but for the moment I'm just looking at infantry.  I'd love to add a Sicaran some Adi Mech and Imp Army at some point.

What I've managed to lay my hands on

1 Mk III Iron Hand

5 Destroyers (not jumpers)

5 Mk IV Tacticals

5 Mk V Tacticals

5 Mk IV Assault Marines

5 Mk V Assault Marines

2 Apothecaries

I might use the MK V guys in 40K although I might make the force to be quite late in the HH so I can include them, basically I'm aiming at building in 50% blocks so 10 Tacticals etc.

I've decided to go for the loyalists a rough split of Isstvan surviors and legionnaires that stayed loyal to the the BIG E, I want to mix things up and use various legions probably just using Space Marine Crusade Army List, I'm not to fussed about building an ultra-competitive force more some fluffy fun.

Definate Legions:

Iron Hands

Warhounds

Dusk Raiders

Imperial Fists

Legions that are definately out:

Space Wolves (if I use them it will soon be a 30K Space Wolves army and I've got one of those underway for 40K)

Dark Angels (Fancy doing a 40K DA successor ar some point)

Iron Warriors

emperor's children

word bearers

night lords

slamanders

sons of horus

deathguard

world eaters

Might be cool to add but not sure how to do so or which ones to use (feel free to sell me on any of them):

Luna Wolves

Alpha Legion

Raven Guard

Ultramarines

Blood Angels

White Scars

Thousand Sons

c+c and suggestions welcome.

First of all, welcome to the Heresy and the Age of Darkness forum!

As for a Legion to go with, as much as I love the Great Crusade and Heresy eras, I'm quite fond of the Unification period and vote for either Warhounds or Dusk Raiders.

As Night Lords are out i must vote for the Ravens or the Scars. Ravens because mor deythan, corax, dark furies and you get to say Nevermore when you kill stuff. Scars because space mongolians with power Dao riding jetbikes. And Jaghatai. Who will also be on a jetbike. A big one. Called Tengu hopefully.

FISTS! JOIN THE GOLDEN YELLOW LIGHT OF VICTORY AND LOYALTY MY BROTHER! WE GOT CRAZY GOOD BOLTERS AND STORM SHIELDS!(CHICKS DIG THE YELLOW)

Seriously though, pick which legion you can see yourself wearing the armor of. Its a hell of a lot easier to find inspiration if you think you're one of em!

........oh and remember Sigismund..... tongue.png

So you want to build a mixed legion force? It's a very cool and ambitious project. i think the key is to have a narrative to the force. Potentially, you could suggest that it was assembled by an Imperial Fists scout ship investigating the istvaan system post-atrocity. They could pick up limited elements of loyalist survivors from both istvaan III and V. Those from III revert to their old heraldry. With this theme you could readily incorporate Luna wolves and raven guard with your existing definite legions, but I'd probably leave it there.

Finally, in terms of models, if you are planning on tanks at SOME point, I'd add them concurrently with the infantry. You'll want some armour and big guns very quickly in this setting!

Look forward to seeing how this flies!

Hell, if this is turning into an impromptu vote, I'd say Fists all the live long day. Is it because I'm collecting Fists myself? Erm... would you believe me if I said no? That said, I'm partial to the idea of a Warhounds force. Don't see enough of those around here (or many at all for that matter). ^_^

I swear the whole B+C community always manages to convince people to go with Imperial Fists, it's happened too many times on this forum :P

Well my advice would be to narrow down what core traits you like about the legions, methods of warfare, colour schemes and famous battles come later. What really matters is that you choose a legion whose character you really enjoy, after all you'll be building a whole force of models and I'm sure that if you like the fluff you'll want a legion you can really get behind.

After that you might want to think about a unifying theme for your army whether it is a method of warfare, their time period or a particular campaign.

Iron Hands and Imperial Fists have some of the nicest traits for Legions in the game. Iron Hands are -1Str to all shooting attacks against them rendering them immune to Str 8 ID in ranged combat. Imperial Fists have +1BS with bolter weapons and Tank Hunters on Heavy Support Squads making FoTL on Tactical Squads scary and Heavy Support Squads More cost efficient. I'm with Operative on this one, Pick the one that stands out to you the most. Don't worry about rules until you find one or two you like.

Welcome!

IH, IF and DR all have the feeling of firepower. If you're feeling more Tank and offensive go with IH. Stand and shoot, IF. Infantry and offense DR. Or if you just want to [RIP AND TEAR] it's hard to go wrong with WH.

If you're looking for a good complementary legion than I can't help but suggest the XIXth. With access to Mor Deythan for high powered alpha strikes from unseen quarters or the best snipers around. Dark Furies with give you hard hitting and mobile units. Darkwings for outflanking things like Mor Deythan or Tac support squads in a stealth gunship. The ability to strike anything from anywhere complements the slower grinds of the main legions your looking for. The perfect knife in the dark to help your hammer.

Having been excited about the battle for terra since RT I am working on a iron fists force and will be adding assault BA in as I love painting red as well as a unit of scars because the idea of dikbikes being flown by space mongols is just awesome.

That said the rules for the hands and fists both are sweet. Who doesn't like +1 bs on Bolter Fire!? How about a higher T??

Unless you really enjoy painting yellow if get a can of army painter yellow to spray over a black basecoat, line it with a flesh then brown wash and detail out your favorite color.

Made a few decisions and work has begun.

1 x Praetor (Imperial Fist - Polux?)

1 x Centurion (Iron Hand - PA)

1 x Centurion (Dusk Raider - TDA)

1 x Legion Tectical Squad (20 Marines) (Iron Hands)

1 x Legion Assault Squad (10) (Warhounds)

1 x Legion Assault Squad (10) (WarhoundS)

1 x Legion Tactical Support Squad (10) (Imperial Fists)

1 x Legion Tactical Support Squad (10) (1K Sons)

1 x Legion Veteran Tactical Squad (10) (Imperial FIsts)

1 x Legion Destroyer Squad (10) (Dusk Raiders)

1 x Apothecary Detachment (2)

1 x Legion Terminator Squad (10) (Dusk Raiders)

1 x Contemptor Dreadnough Talon (3)

The IH Centurion ready to assmemble (once I work out how best to stick his toe back on)

I'd love to use Polux the problem is that he's GW ip so he can be killed off or dropped at any time.  Plus I'm just not good enough of a painter to do him full justice.  I think for now I will create my own Praetor and maybe bring Polux in at a later date.

I'm also going to do a centurion for each legion that I use.  Reading through HH4, I definately going to have some Black Shields in my force not sure whether to do a full squad or sprinkle some into different squads, what do people think?

What is the best way to run troops in HH, 10 man squads so I can give them Rhinos or 20 man squads (I get the feeling the emperor favours the big battalions)?

We have Senechals and Castellans if Extermination is anything to go by; i.e Senechal Fafnir Rann who would later on be CM of the Executionners, no?

But beyond that its just Captains and Sergeants. Since not even Sigismund is recognized as a Preator; just First Captain.

Remember, Praetor is the 'official' designation for officers who command joint forces. On the force disposition table for Paramar is has Kyr Vahlen's rank of Warsmith next to a bracketed Praetor designation. I assume that's because FW is trying to drive home just how varied the rank structures are in different Legions and the Imperium needed a way to 'keep the books'. Other instances would be Khârn's rank of Centurion, but being a Praetor level commander.

Yeah, you're right. I just think that it can get kinda wonky with 'Official Designation' when you take into consideration that the Imperial Fists (unless Papa Dorn is there) will defer leadership to the one with the most experience with the situation. i.e a Castellan being given overall command of his forces + reinforcements at his station/garrison since he will have the most intimate knowledge of the area and how to best approach the situation.

Under that role he would Technically be : Preator, Castellan and Captain but once the fighting is over he would lose the Preator title since he is no longer in overall command, have Castellan remain as a Mark of Honor should he leave his Garrison Post of which he was Castellan for and officially be a Captain.

Kinda like Polux when he takes command of the Retribution Fleet. He was: Fleetmaster and Captain and due to his overall command role, technically filled out the requirements for being a Preator.

Which is something I like about the Fists.
